After years of research, engineers at the California Institute of Technology succeeded in shrinking their Eco polymerase chain reaction (PCR) device to a portable size. Designed for deployment in remote settings, the prototype rechargeable battery-powered unit uses a chip to diagnose malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, and other diseases.

Researchers previously demonstrated technology to capture cancer cells circulating in the blood stream, and now that capability has been fine-tuned to immobilize and retrieve single cancer cells. A microfluidic chip designed at the University of California (Los Angeles) was retrofitted with transparent polymer nanofibers. This new substrate facilitated single cell capture and separation, aided by laser micro-dissection.
