Portable Lab Targets Malarial Mutations
Portable Lab Targets Malarial Mutations

Field trials in Africa will soon test the efficacy of a handheld diagnostic tool which differentiates strains of drug-resistant malaria. The UK-based developers condensed benchtop technology into a point-of-care molecular diagnostic device that requires no power source or water. MedCity News explains that a cassette holding a patient's sample is inserted into the reader and generates results in 15 minutes. A nanowire biosensor analyzes malarial DNA and detects specific mutations linked to drug resistance. Design ideas to refine the working prototype are invited as part of a crowdfunding campaign.

Solar-powered Cancer Assay

Solar-powered Cancer Assay The heat source for this polymerase chain reaction (PCR) device is the sun, making it ideal for use in remote locations. Cornell University researchers designed the kit for use with a smartphone to detect Kaposi's sarcoma. Diagnostic tests are returned in 30 minutes, and power use is reduced 100-fold relative to conventional PCR systems, due to the efficient heating capabilities of solar energy.

Catch Damage Early
Catch Damage Early

ShockWatch

Installing, then repairing, damaged capital equipment like MRI or CT scanners wastes scarce dollars. The tamper-proof ShockWatch Flex impact indicator minimizes that waste by helping catch damage early, before equipment is installed. Adhering even to curved surfaces, the device turns red when your own impact tolerances are exceeded.

Schaffner EMC Inc.

Schaffner power cords with IEC lock guard against accidental disconnection of all electrical appliances with an IEC inlet. The patented IEC Lock System does not require any modifications to existing IEC sockets and can be used with any Schaffner IEC inlet filter.

Standard and hospital grade plugs available.

Nylon — a Tougher Coating for Demanding Environments
Nylon — a Tougher Coating for Demanding Environments
Nylon Colours Ltd.

Nylon Colours' coatings exhibit superior resistance to abrasion, impact, scratching, and solvents, compared to standard powder coatings. These properties are retained down to -40° C. Nylon Coatings release dirt and contaminants easily and are low friction, making them eminently suitable for components which slide or rub.

Applied by electrostatic spray or fluidized bed.

Paper Pinpoints Protozoan

Paper Pinpoints Protozoan
A simple paper strip test described in LabMedica quickly detects the parasite that causes the diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis. The presence of the pathogen's DNA in a stool sample is identified using recombinase polymerase amplification and visually confirmed on the lateral flow strips. The disease was successfully identified by Rice University researchers in 21 infected patients.

Lens- and Label-free Molecular Sensing

Lens- and Label-free Molecular Sensing Viruses and protein layers 3 nm thick are detected in blood samples with a portable sensor that relies on light intensity changes of biomarkers on a nanoscale chip. The 60 g lens-free device comprising an optical lab-on-a-chip features off-the-shelf components, including an LED, a CMOS chip, and a 10 mm square gold plate pierced with nanoholes. Up to 170,000 different molecules can be analyzed with the technique developed by an international team of researchers.

Scanner for Speedy Eye Screening

Scanner for Speedy Eye Screening
Early detection of glaucoma and other eye disorders is possible with a single scan of a hand-held device designed at MIT. The high-speed optical coherence tomography imaging system is intended for use outside of a specialist's office for wider population access. The device produces high-resolution 3D images of the retina and also automatically corrects for inadvertent patient movement.

X-rays Go Soft

X-rays Go Soft The venerable X-ray machine has been downsized to enhance portability and upgraded to image soft tissues with great clarity. The prototype uses a series of micron-sized sources to generate coherent X-ray beams. No contrast agent is required and the radiation dose to the patient is lower relative to current technologies, according to Med Tech Pulse.

Platform is Portable and Multifunctional

Platform is Portable and Multifunctional
Low-cost lab-on-a-chip systems for diverse applications have been realized by an international consortium. Foil-based smart cards developed in the four-year, European Union-funded project are used in concert with a portable reader to diagnose colorectal cancer, assess marine water quality, and detect pathogens in food. A skin patch signals cocaine consumption, reports Medical Design Technology.

Serve Up Smarter Diagnostics

Serve Up Smarter Diagnostics Now there's a diagnostic app for the Google Glass device which returns results from lateral-flow immunochromatographic assays, or test strips, within seconds. An image of the test captured by the glasses is uploaded by the app to a server for evaluation. The approach proved successful with HIV and prostate-specific antigen assays.
