Compact Radiation Source Drives Small Scanner
Compact Radiation Source Drives Small Scanner

An X-ray scanner in the hand would hold untold benefits for health services in rural and developing regions. The compact scanner engineered at University of Missouri is based on a downsized accelerator, said to be about the size of a stick of gum. The low exposure, low energy-consuming device uses a lithium niobate crystal to amplify an input of 10 V into 100,000 V via the piezoelectric effect. Currently in the prototype stage, the handheld unit may also provide low-dose X-rays for dental patients, or assume a security role and inspect cargo at seaports and border crossings.

Brentwood Plastics, Inc.

Brentwood Plastics, Inc. manufactures ETO and gamma sterilizable polyethylene (LDPE) films for surgical drapes, medical device packaging, and medical devices. All Brentwood Plastics products are order driven and custom made. If they do not have a proven time-tested solution for your application, they will develop a custom product in short order.

Diagnostic Data Delivery to the Cloud

Diagnostic Data Delivery to the Cloud The mobile microfluidic chip developed at Columbia University and field tested in Rwanda is now linked to the cloud. HIV testing is completed in 15 minutes with the handheld mobile device in resource-limited areas, and diagnostic data are synchronized with patients' records in the cloud. Product Design & Development has more on this successful convergence of cell phone, satellite communications, and fluid miniaturization technologies.

Monarch Instrument

The Monarch Nova-Strobe LED family of rugged industrial stroboscopes provide an extremely bright, uniform light output for performing stop motion diagnostic inspection and RPM measurements. The twelve LED light source is extremely efficient which means long battery life and continuous cool operation. From Monarch Instrument.

Tool for Head Injury Triage

Tool for Head Injury Triage
The first handheld device designed to detect traumatic intracranial hematomas using near-infrared technology has been upgraded. The battery-operated scanner emits near-infrared radiation into tissue and absorbance, which indicates pooled or circulating blood, is monitored by a silicon light detector. The scanner is suited for rapid screening of patients for further treatment in military as well as civilian applications.

Mobility for Patients and Data

Mobility for Patients and Data This continuous monitor is always with the hospital patient, constantly sending vital signs through a hospital's Wi-Fi infrastructure. A wrist monitor and read-out is connected to body-worn sensors that allow for freedom of movement. Clinicians can use tablets or cell phones to track patient status, putting the whole health care chain in motion.

Diagnosis by Breathing

Diagnosis by Breathing
Exhaled breath could pinpoint different types of lung infections with a simple assay developed at the University of Vermont. The method distinguishes between unique volatile organic compound signatures in breath associated with specific bacterial strains. Successful testing of the secondary electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry method with lab mice could lead to a diagnostic breathalyzer.

Portable PCR for Point-of-Care

Portable PCR for Point-of-Care After years of research, engineers at the California Institute of Technology succeeded in shrinking their Eco polymerase chain reaction (PCR) device to a portable size. Designed for deployment in remote settings, the prototype rechargeable battery-powered unit uses a chip to diagnose malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, and other diseases.

Rapid, Inexpensive Assay is Golden

Rapid, Inexpensive Assay is Golden
A less-expensive alternative to quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis will enable rapid testing for multiple diseases with one small sample. Gold nanoparticles are linked with DNA strands in the biosensor designed at the University of Toronto, Canada. The DNA is "snipped" from the nanoparticles in the presence of a target gene, turning the sample red.

Chip Captures Single Cancer Cells

Chip Captures Single Cancer Cells Researchers previously demonstrated technology to capture cancer cells circulating in the blood stream, and now that capability has been fine-tuned to immobilize and retrieve single cancer cells. A microfluidic chip designed at the University of California (Los Angeles) was retrofitted with transparent polymer nanofibers. This new substrate facilitated single cell capture and separation, aided by laser micro-dissection.
