UK's Largest Smart Grid Gains Ground
UK's Largest Smart Grid Gains Ground

At a cost of £54M, the Customer-Led Network Revolution (CLNR) is the largest smart grid project in the UK. The project's first stage of research, involving some 12,000 customers, is now complete. Its focus: better understand how much electricity people use, when they use it, and for what purpose. Project managers would also like to know how they can "encourage customers to shift their usage away from periods of peak demand." Transmission & Distribution World shares preliminary results and explains how the CLNR is expected to help the UK achieve its goals of a low-carbon economy.

Meeting More Demand Without Adding Capacity

Meeting More Demand Without Adding Capacity
Power demand is rising, so what can utilities do to keep up? Oklahoma Gas & Electric opted not to build more capacity. Instead, they're building a smart grid to increase efficiency and save money. This video shows how the utility put the plan into practice, and how they monitor it with a unique network control system.

$2 Trillion in Smart Grid Opportunities

$2 Trillion in Smart Grid Opportunities With a potential world demand of $2 trillion over the next 20 years — and a 30% sales growth from 2011 to 2012 — investors are feeling pretty confident about the future of smart grids. But even with such a sunny forecast, Smart Grid News warns that there's still the possibility for investment funds to dry up.

Embedded Systems Platform Simplifies Smart Grid Integration

Embedded Systems Platform Simplifies Smart Grid Integration
National Instruments is rolling out a low-cost General Purpose Inverter Controller (GPIC). The company expects the GPIC to allow renewable energy sources like solar and wind power to get onto the smart grid faster. Control Engineering talks with the company's principal product manager about how the GPIC will make it easier to build smart grid-ready products.

Reaching Out to Rural Customers

Reaching Out to Rural Customers Emerson is seeking new ways to make its business compatible with the smart grid. Now, thanks to a partnership with EnerSphere and Jetlun, the company is trying to deliver broadband to rural communities. From there, says The Energy Collective, Emerson can pilot a "bundled intelligent energy management platform" that connects thermostats and water heaters to homeowners' smartphones and PCs.

Smart Grid's Fastest Growing Markets

Smart Grid's Fastest Growing Markets
Silver Spring Networks is going after the smart grid market in Asia, and the company has already landed its first deal in Singapore. Why the focus on Asia? Pike Research reports slower growth for the U.S. smart grid market through 2014 — but in developing countries, contractors are finding significant opportunities.

Smart Grid Hiring Tips

Smart Grid Hiring Tips As the former general manager of Glendale Power & Water, Glenn Steiger successfully oversaw the installation of 120,000 smart meters. So it's safe to say he knows a thing or two about finding quality workers. Steiger chats with Smart Grid Careers about five keys to success when it comes to human resources and smart grid deployments.
