Industrial Silencers and Sound Attenuators
Industrial Silencers and Sound Attenuators impede the propagation of airborne noise through ductwork and building openings as well as enclosures and HVAC equipment. Although all silencers accomplish this to varying degrees, many do so by compromising system performance.
ArtUSA however, offers the design and engineering assistance to integrate our industrial silencers and sound attenuators into a system solution. As a result our industrial air silencers are custom engineered to satisfy the requirements of each application. Prime candidates for noise control measures are openings into and out of noisy environments. This includes the ventilation of buildings, enclosures, and equipment rooms. Integration of noise control measures, such as silencers and louvers, into the system design requires careful consideration of space constraints, fan selection and aerodynamic pressure losses. Silencers for Blowers, fans, stacks and any machine air exhausts or intakes can be muffled using our large selection of Silencers. We can offer low pressure drop and maximum noise reduction for your specific application.
Industrial Silencers and Sound Attenuators
ArtUSA Industrial Silencers and sound attenuators are custom engineered to provide:
optimum acoustic performance
superior aerodynamic characteristics
field erection without special equipment
easy maintenance
Reactive silencers, Diffuser-type silencers, Active silencers and Dissipative silencers
Reactive silencers have tuned cavities or membranes and are designed to attenuate low frequency noise from machines. Diffuser-type silencers have perforated pepper pots that slow down velocity and are mainly used for nozels, jet engines etc. Active silencers use microphones and electronics to determine and attenuate noise. Not frequently used Dissipative silencers are widely used for HVAC duct systems.
Silencers are absorptive units designed & fabricated to provide predictable, durable noise control performance for applications such as HVAC system noise, fan noise, plenums, mechanical draft fans, gas turbines, cooling towers and equipment rooms. ArtUSA Silencers and Attenuators allow a large volume of air flow with minimal aerodynamic restrictions, resulting in effective noise insertion losses with static pressure drops of less than 1" w.g. We can ship or install both standard & custom designed units.

Noise Control for Fans & Exhausts – This specialty product is designed for intake or exhaust fans of large equipment. Large equipment usually requires a substantial amount of airflow but untreated fan areas can create, and even spread, noise unnecessarily. These sound attenuators handle the noise without affecting needed airflow - they are often called silencers..
Silencers normally contain one or more passages which are lined with sound absorbing materials, incorporated in structures that protect them from erosion from air flow. To attenuate low frequency sounds, thick baffles widely spaced are used; whereas for high frequency sounds, the best absorption is obtained by using thin baffles closely spaced. Middle frequency sounds can be absorbed by both thick and thin baffles, but intermediate thickness baffles are preferred. Increased attenuation, at times, may be achieved by incorporating bends or elbows into the silencer.
Acoustical Ventilation Systems
ArtUSA noise Control engineers design quiet ventilation systems. Quiet ventilation is needed when breakout noise is a problem or when the ventilation system itself is the dominant noise source.
Industrial equipment creates heat build-up inside an enclosure or facility. Channeling air over the equipment supplies cooling and removes heat. Noise from equipment inside the building escapes through openings that intake and exhaust cooling air. These openings must be silenced if it is not to disturb the surrounding environment.
In some cases, the interior of the building is quiet but noise from the large ventilation fans that bring in and expel air is a problem that must be attenuated.
To treat noise breakout or fan noise, we utilize:
- Quiet fans (axial or radial)
- Acoustically lined ridge vents
- Acoustically lined weatherhoods
- Acoustically lined plenums
- Acoustically lined louvers
- Custom-designed silencers
Silenced Turbine Intakes & Exhausts
ArtUSA builds quiet into turbine intake and exhaust systems as part of our total acoustical facility design, treating intake and exhaust noise with:
- Inlet and exhaust silencers
- Air inlet filtration
- Duct sound abatement
Inlet and Exhaust Silencers
ArtUSA guarantees the quiet performance of the silencers we supply. Our silencers are tested for various DIL's (Dynamic Insertion Losses) to arrive at the silencer design requirements needed to meet the noise level target while maintaining acceptable pressure drops. We installs:
- Intake silencers
- Exhaust silencers in a vertical stack
- Exhaust silencers in horizontal ductwork
- HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator) exhaust stack silencers
Air Inlet Filtration
Our acoustical, mechanical and structural engineers can design complete air inlet silencing systems, including filter houses of various configurations.
Duct Sound Abatement
Breakout noise and vibrations from intake and exhaust ducts can be enormous depending on engine size. To treat duct noise,IES offers acoustical:
- Lagging
- Double wall construction
- Vibration isolation
- Acoustic expansion joints
Gas Turbine Silencers
Once and adequate enclosure is in place the silencing of gas turbine installations in industrial environments is basically a problem of attenuating the noise from the atmospheric inlet and the exhaust openings. In installations in residential and rural areas, the sound from the gas turbine enclosure, auxiliaries, and driven equipment also must be considered in the silencing program. Some degree of attenuation can be attained by natural factors, such as divergence, directivity, air absorption, and duct configurations. Further sound control, however, must be obtained through the use of adequate silencers.
Silencers normally contain one or more passages which are lined with sound absorbing materials, incorporated in structures that protect them from erosion from air flow. To attenuate low frequency sounds, thick baffles widely spaced should be employed for optimal performance; whereas for high frequency sounds, the best absorption is obtained by using thin baffles closely spaced. Middle frequency sounds can be absorbed by both thick and thin baffles, but intermediate thickness baffles are more desirable. Increased attenuation, at times, may be achieved by incorporating bends or elbows into the silencer.
It is important to have experience to determine what combination of absorptive and reactive treatment will most economically produce the required acoustic performance. A turbine exhaust system solution must provide materials and designs that enable highly effective low-frequency noise attenuation and tolerate thermal growth, thus giving long, trouble-free performance. Inlet noise, by contrast, has predominantly high frequency content where an absorptive silencer, in series with the inlet filtration system is required to quiet the turbine. The full system approach--acoustic and aerodynamic--is crucial to optimizing the performance of the turbine and minimizing unnecessary costs. ArtUSA uses its proven design, engineering, manufacturing and management experience to provide a seamless package which offers the highest filtration efficiency and the most effective noise control.
ArtUSA engineers and manufactures noise control and air filtration solutions for gas-fired turbines and diesel engines that are used for stationary and portable power generation applications. ArtUSA has a vast portfolio of successes with applications as small as 100 kilowatts to those as large as several hundred megawatts, and has custom-designed systems installed on all major turbine brands, including GE, Siemens-Westinghouse, Pratt & Whitney and ABB.
An attenuator is an electronic device that reduces the amplitude or power of a signal without appreciably distorting its waveform. Attenuators are usually passive devices made from resistors. The degree of attenuation may be fixed, continuously adjustable, or incrementally adjustable.
Low level attenuators
An attenuator is effectively the opposite of an amplifier, though the two work by different methods. While an amplifier provides gain, an attenuator provides loss, or negative gain.
A fixed electrical attenuator is often called a pad, especially in telephony and audio engineering. The input and output impedances of an electrical attenuator are usually matched to the impedances of the signal source and load, respectively.
A line-level attenuator in the preamp or a power attenuator after the power amplifier uses electrical resistance to reduce the amplitude of the signal that reaches the speaker, reducing the volume of the output. A line-level attenuator has lower power handling, such as a 1/2-watt potentiometer. A power attenuator has higher power handling, such as 10 or 50 watts.
Power attenuators
In audio electronics, attenuators are used as a dummy load by sending all of the power to the resistor and none to the speaker, in order to silence or reduce the output volume of an audio amplifier (for example, a guitar amplifier). Silencing an amplifier is useful for biasing the positive and negative signal crossover, for running bench tests such as measuring the amplifier's maximum output wattage, and for adding line-level effects between a guitar amplifier and a guitar speaker.

We offer the following Noise Control Solutions
Absorbers
Absorbers; Melamine Foam, Polyurethane Foam, Low Density Fiberglass Batt, and High-Density Fiberglass Board are used in the room to absorb reflective energy where walls and ceilings create acoustical mirrors. Absorbers keep noise from reflecting from surfaces in a room and returning to the listening position as a delayed signal causing inaccurate noise levels. Absorption will lower the volume in the room to some degree because reflective noise is reduced therefore volume is reduced.
Diffusers and Reflectors
Diffusers and reflectors; Barrel/Pyramid are used to reshape reflective energy where walls and ceilings create acoustical mirrors. Diffusers and reflectors keep volume the same as untreated walls and ceilings while changing the shape of the noise. Diffusers and reflectors break up the sound wave patterns to eliminate spikes and dips in frequencies at the listening position.
Sealers
Sealers; Door Seals, Automatic Door Bottoms , Thresholds , and Acoustical Caulk are used to close gaps in openings, such as doors & windows and penetrations, such as outlets, switch boxes, HVAC openings, and anywhere building materials meet. Sealers are very cost effective yet often the most overlooked step in noise control solutions.
Isolation and Vibration Control
Isolation and vibration control; Pad Type Mountings , Resilient Sound Isolation Clips, Isolation Mountings , Resilient Channels , Damping Compound , and are used to eliminate structure borne noise where materials meet or vibrate. Isolators and vibration control materials keep noise from traveling through materials such as pipes, ducts, studs, drywall, plywood, concrete, glass or sheet metal.
Barriers
Barriers; Non-Reinforced Flexible Vinyl , Reinforced Flexible Barrier , Barrier/Absorber Blankets , and Barrier/Absorber Composites are used to keep noise from transmitting from one space to another. Noise barriers are always high density, massive, heavy materials. Flexible barriers work better because they "flex" with sound pressure. Rigid barriers such as drywall, concrete, plywood and like materials need to be isolated to keep them from transmitting noise structurally. Barriers are essential for eliminating noise transmission.
Noise is not a new hazard. It has been a constant threat since the industrial revolution. Too much noise exposure may cause a temporary change in hearing (your ears may feel stuffed up) or a temporary ringing in your ears (tinnitus). These short-term problems usually go away within a few minutes or hours after leaving the noise. However, repeated exposures to loud noise can lead to permanent, incurable hearing loss or tinnitus . NIOSH recommends removing hazardous noise from the workplace whenever possible and using hearing protectors in those situations where dangerous noise exposures have not yet been controlled or eliminated. What Is Noise?
Noise is unwanted sound which may be hazardous to health, interfere with speech and verbal communications or is otherwise disturbing, irritating or annoying.
What Is Sound?
Sound is defined as any pressure variation in air, water or other fluid medium which may be detected by the human ear.
What Are The Characteristics Of Sound?
The two most important characteristics which must be known in order to evaluate the sound or noise are it's amplitude and frequency. The amplitude or height of the sound wave from peak to valley determines the loudness or intensity. The wave length determines the frequency, pitch or tone of the sound.
How Are These Characteristics Expressed?
The frequency of sound is expressed in wavelengths per second or cycles per second (CPS). It is more commonly referred to as Hertz. Low frequency noise is 250 Hertz (Hz) and below. High frequency noise is 2000 Hz and above. Mid-frequency noise falls between 250 and 2000 Hz.
The amplitude of sound is expressed in decibels (dB). This is a logarithmic compressed scale dealing in powers of 10 where small increments in dB correspond to large changes in acoustic energy.
What Are Octave Bands?
Standardized octave bands are groups of frequencies named by the center frequency where the upper limit is always twice the lower limit of the range. Test data for performance of acoustical materials is standardized for easy comparison at the center frequencies. Equipment noise levels and measurement devices (dB meters) also follow the preferred octave bands.
What Is The Difference Between dB And dBA?
dB sound pressure levels are unweighted. dBA levels are "A" weighted according to the weighting curves shown below to approximate the way the human ear hears. For example, a 100 dB level at 100 Hz will be perceived to have a loudness equal to only 80 dB at 1000 Hz. Other weighting scales (C and B) are also shown. The dBA scale is based on a child's hearing and was originally documented based on actual hearing tests to characterize the human ear's relative response to noise.
Is Hearing Loss Permanent?
Yes! Permanent hearing loss occurs when the tiny hair cells in the cochlea (inner ear) are damaged or destroyed. A healthy cochlea contains approximately 40 thousand hair cells which are necessary to transmit sound vibrations to the brain. Exposure to excessive noise levels will damage the hair cells resulting in permanent, irreversible hearing loss.
Yes! The pressure associated with the loudest known sound is more than one billion times that associated with the faintest sound. Such a large range is unmanageable for measurement purposes. Using a logarithmic scale compresses the range to between 0 and 200 dB. At right, various sound level changes are referenced to relative loudness and acoustic energy loss. A 5 dB change is more than a 50% change in acoustic energy!!!
Is Sound Power The Same As Sound Pressure?
No! While both sound power levels (Lw) and sound pressure levels (Lp) are both expressed in decibels, the referenced standards for each are different. More importantly, the sound power level is the total acoustic energy output of a noise source independent of environment. Sound pressure levels are dependent on environmental factors such as the distance from the source, the presence of reflective surfaces and other characteristics of the room/building/area hosting the source. Actual sound pressure levels will always be higher than sound power levels.

Noise Control Barrier Walls are engineered, modular sound panels designed for high sound transmission loss of outdoor noise. Typical customers have chillers, substations, fans, blowers, compressors, air conditioners and other outdoor mechanical equipment cause disturbing noise at its neighbor's property line. Our engineered sound panels are specifically designed and constructed with environmentally durable composite construction that absorbs sound energy and shields offensive noises.
Over the past decade ArtUSA has designed hundreds of power plant noise control. Employing every type of combustion turbine such as the Siemens- Westinghouse 501G and the General Electric 9FA. We offer custom silencer designs encompassing the acoustical, aerodynamic and structural design along with materials selection, fabrication drawings, installation inspections and follow-up testing services. At the base load facilities, which are often the sole power supply for small but densely populated islands, noise suppression is frequently a major concern because there are few things louder than the super- charger on a huge industrial diesel engine. Consequently, we have been involved in the acoustical design of numerous diesel halls where containment of noise from the equipment inside requires attention to not only the building itself but also to the cooling air ventilation intakes and discharges, particularly when fans are required. We have built enclosures on dozens of large coal, oil or gas fired power stations in the United States and Overseas. Our typical work scope includes the design of all required noise abatement features, and the testing of the completed unit. These plants are large, complex and contain many more significant noise sources than other types of power plants. Our extensive field experience at these facilities allows us to easily handle even the largest projects.
Our engineers are intimately familiar with operational mechanics of these facilities, with all of the component systems and, most importantly, with the typical noise emissions of every source. This experience enables us to predict what noise controls and in what optimal combination will
Sound Barrier Walls
Outdoor community noise problems may require an engineered Sound Barrier Wall. Our walls offer sound reduction by absorbing the sound at its source and blocking the noise from transmitting to noise sensitive areas. Substations, HVAC Chillers, Power Generators, Cooling Towers, and Compressors are a few outdoor noise candidates for our Noise Barrier Walls.
Features:
- High and low temperature applications
- Quilted fiberglass decoupler available
- Good corrosion resistance
- Meets Class A flammability rating per ASTM E-84
Typical Applications
- Noisy Pipes
- Duct Work
- Sheet Metal
- Heat Exchangers
- Valves
- Custom Acoustical Jackets
Features
- Available with a 1" or 2" quilted decoupler
- Meets Class A flammability
- Suitable for indoor or outdoor applications
- Easy to cut and install
- ArtUSA flexible lag series combines a loaded vinyl barrier with foil facing on one side. When a quilted fiberglass is added to the lag barrier it acts as a decoupler to form a tight fitting "floating" noise barrier.
How Noise Barriers Work
The "nuisance" noise is "diffracted" over barriers increasing the distance it must travel to the listener.
Reflection & Absorption
The effectiveness of a barrier depends on how well it diffracts and absorbs the noise.
A high performance barrier has negligible noise transmission and reflection. This is controlled by two coefficients: Absorption() and Sound Insulation (R).
Quality Noise Barriers
- significantly reduce the noise levels.
- guarantee acoustic performance.
- significantly reduce public complaint levels.
- provide an aesthetic visual barrier that will last.
