3M™ ARM Films are the latest version from 3M of anti-reflective films for reducing unwanted reflections and increasing contrast for improved clarity and readability. Utilizing Vikuiti™ display film technology, 3M AR film was designed to provide visual enhancement, increased durability and protection from damage, in a wide variety of applications.

Its multi-layer construction incorporates a very effective anti-reflective element as well as an easy-to-clean layer that minimizes fingerprints and makes cleaning easier than ever. Originally intended for LCD displays, it is also useful for other display technologies, and is appropriate for automotive instrumentation and aerospace avionics applications. It is robust enough to protect the underlaying substrate, yet thin enough to have a minimal effect on touch screen sensitivity.

Construction

The 3M™ ARMP film has a top removable liner and permanent adhesive. Also available is Vikuiti ARMR200 Film which does not have a top removable liner, and has a removable adhesive instead of a permanent adhesive for applications where it is intended to be replaced every 3 – 6 months. Finally, there is Vikuiti ARM200 Film which has both the top and bottom removable liners, but no adhesive layer at all.

Typical Applications

The 3M ARM films can be mounted in any one of several ways. The most common and most efficient method is to mount it as the outermost element of the display. This means it would be laminated to the top of the LC module, or to the front of the touch screen if the design has one. However, you could also realize good results by laminating it to the top of the LC module but underneath a touch screen.

Also, you could laminate the 3M ARM film to the underside of the touch screen. Adhesives are applied to the back surface of the base PET film, enabling direct lamination to the mounting surface. The film will reduce reflections in the system and increase the transmission.

3M™ ARM films are thin enough that it does not significantly affect the sensitivity of most touch screen technologies. However, there may be situations where you might want to avoid applying the 3M ARM film to the front of the touch screen. In this situation, configurations with the 3M ARM film between the LC panel and the touch screen would be an alternative. Customer is responsible for field testing on their device to determine effectiveness.

In order to maximize display enhancement, 3M ARM films must be in intimate contact (optically coupled) with another surface. This means that its adhesive layer must always be laminated to a surface, and not mounted as a free-floating film. In the illustration below Vikuiti AR film is shown as free-floating elements only for clarity. As stated, 3M ARM film must always be laminated to an adjacent surface.

Advisory: ARMR200 and Resistive Touch Screens

Because of variability in a resistive membrane touch screen's distance to the glass faceplate, when a piece of dirt is trapped in between a front surface overlay and the glass, there is a chance a false touch could occur. This can be remedied by removing the overlay.

General Converting, Assembly, and Handling Recommendations

• During converting operations, both the front (if there is one) and rear protective liners should remain on the film.
• Die cutting is the recommended form of converting and will result in the cleanest edges, although shear cutting and laser cutting may also be acceptable. Whatever method used, you should insure that the part has clean, crisp edges without any raggedness or other damage. For 3M™ ARMR200 Film, it is recommended that you die cut through the liner to the film.
• Remove protective liners by tacking near an edge or corner with a piece of aggressive tape and pulling gently.
• Standard laminating procedures, that would be used with any pressure-sensitive adhesive film, should be employed with a squeegee or roller for a smooth application.
• The film has no directional characteristics in the x-y axes, and may be applied in any desired orientation.
• Be aware that handling any polymer film can generate electrostatic charges which can attract dust and debris.
• Remove any loose debris from the film by using compressed air.
• Avoid fingerprints and debris by wearing clean latex gloves and holding the product at the edges.
• Keep the area very clean to lessen the likelihood of debris contamination. Maintaining class 1000 cleanroom conditions is recommended.
• Using anti-static measures, such as ionized air blowers, whenever possible, is recommended.
• As always, protect the film, especially the edges, from any undue shock or stress.

Storage

Material should be stored in its original packaging, laying in a horizontal orientation, away from direct sunlight. Heavy objects should not be piled on top of it to avoid damaging the product. Ambient temperature and humidity should be controlled to 10 – 30 degrees C at 35 – 65% R.H.
