Ultra Reliable Position Sensors for the Automotive Industry
At 200 MPH There Is No Margin For Error.
Why settle for less in your passenger or commercial vehicles? Novotechnik sensors are critical to the success of top Formula One, CART, Indy Racing League, and World Rally Championship teams. They are used for throttle and pedal position, steering, ride-height and automated gear selection. With budgets for some teams exceeding $100 million per year, they can use any sensor from any supplier. They choose Novotechnik because they are "ultra reliable".
Yet these Novotechnik sensors are not unique to racing. The same sensor technology can be found in the Novotechnik sensor in the car or truck that might be in your driveway right now.
Novotechnik is a world leader in the technical development and manufacturing of high-durability position sensors and other motion control components. Combining engineering excellence and expertise, Novotechnik develops and manufactures a wide range of the highest quality products to serve the automotive and non-automotive industries.
Every day over 30,000 vehicles roll off U.S. and European production lines with steering, engine management, and chassis systems built around Novotechnik throttle, steering, stability regulation, gear selection, and pedal position sensors. Novotechnik's U.S. Automotive Division based in Livonia, Michigan, provides the first-hand, on-the-spot technical support that Automotive manufacturers and their Tier 1 suppliers need to develop systems that can improve performance and handling.
Engineering excellence - combined with strict quality controls, volume manufacturing capacity and reliable delivery - establishes Novotechnik as a top supplier to leading Automotive manufacturers and their suppliers. ISO/TS-16949 certified.
The Robert Bosch Corporation cited Novotechnik's record of "Constructive cooperation and continuous improvement" in naming Novotechnik "Worldwide Supplier of the Year." In addition to Bosch, Novotechnik customers include:
- BMW
- DaimlerChrysler
- Delphi
- Ferrari
- Hella
- NVG
- Nissan
- Porsche

Steer-by-Wire and Electric Assist – Options for Automotive Manufacturers
Hydraulic power steering can sap a car's performance creating parasitic power loss and driving down fuel economy as much as 5 percent. Steer-by-Wire and electric-assist power steering systems, on the other hand, are exceptionally compact, light, and easy to maintain, making them practical even in vehicles with small engines where performance might rule out hydraulic steering.
Novotechnik sensors, mounted on both the steering rack or and column, are highly durable and redundant mission critical devices providing information to a control computer that calculates position and power assist requirements. Novotechnik is providing sensors to Tier 1 and OEMs for these innovative steering
Engine Management - Fuel Efficiency, Emissions and Performance
The engine control systems found on many luxury and high-performance automobiles depend on Novotechnik position sensors to provide optimal engine management. In these throttle-by-wire systems, Novotechnik accelerator pedal sensors provide pedal position to the Engine Control Unit and Novotechnik throttle-body sensors provide position feedback of the throttle butterfly valve. Top Tier 1 Suppliers and Automotive OEMs demand Novotechnik performance and durability for these mission critical systems. To date, Novotechnik's customer has not recorded a single field failure of the throttle sensor, over six years and 15 million sensors. Not one. Zero
Electronic Stability in Rain, Snow and Ice
Electronic systems can help provide needed stability while cornering or driving in rain, snow and ice. The reliability of these systems has been demonstrated in Formula 1 race cars that can power through corners as if on rails. Stability Regulation, Handling, and Skid Electronic Stability Control Systems combine intelligent braking and electronic throttle controls with yaw rate sensors to control the throttle and activate the appropriate combination of individual wheel brakes needed to bring the vehicle back under control when it starts to skid, sway, or slide.
Extremely durable and highly precise, Novotechnik sensors measure steering angle, throttle valve position, and accelerator pedal position to provide accurate input to the stability control systems found in many high- performance and luxury automobiles.
Four-Wheel Steering - Like Driving on Rails
Four-wheel steering improves maneuverability and stability on the highway while making low-speed parking and turning easier for the driver. With four-wheel steering, the rear wheels are controlled by an electronic system. At high speeds, the rear wheels are steered in the same direction as the front. The result: the car drives as if on rails as the system compensates for the lateral force exerted on the rear wheels that can cause a vehicle to sway or skid. Safety and performance are enhanced. At low speeds, the rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction from the front to reduce the vehicle's turning circle making parallel parking a piece of cake.
Novotechnik position sensors at the driver's wheel and the rear axle provide the high-resolution, multiple-redundant measurements necessary to implement four-wheel steering.

Miniature Rotary Position Sensors (P501) from Everight Precision Technologies Corporation. The P501 is a very compact and durable sensor ideally suited to applications which are beyond the capabilities of potentiometers.
The P501 RIPS (Rotary Inductive Position Sensor) is a non contact potentiometer which provides outstanding performance and durability for harsh environments. The sensor has been designed for arduous applications. The P501 is very compact and durable and is ideally suited to applications which are beyond the capability of potentiometers.
Please use the links to the right for additional specifications and information, ask a quesition or to request a quotation for your application.
The sensor incorporates all the signal processing to give a high performance DC analogue output. The sensor provides a linear output characteristic with displacement and the DC analogue output signal represents absolute position.
Angular displacement ranges of up to 140 degrees can be achieved without gearing. Linearity of +/ -0.5° over 80 degrees rotation is achieved as standard. Performance and stability are excellent over a wide temperature range up to 125°C. The sensor also offers excellent frequency response.
The sensor has a robust anodized aluminum housing sealed to IP67. The housing is easy to mount and sprung blade drive or plain shaft with flat are available.
The sensor is suitable for many applications in the industrial market, but are particularly suitable for automotive testing and motor racing applications.
Everight Sensors serves automated equipment and component OEMs and large end users requiring specifically designed LVDT, RVDT, LVIT, RVIT, and SEF based sensor devices to provide linear and angular position information to data acquisition and control systems. Product solutions can integrate all three essential aspects of the application requirement: basic sensor technology and support electronics, mechanical packaging, and system interface. Mechanical packaging considerations include physical interface with actuated components as well as environmental and operating conditions including immersion, pressure, temperature, shock and vibration, and impact. System interface solutions encompass digital interfaces such as Ethernet, Canbus, Devicenet, etc. plus wireless and TEDS "plug and play" technology.

In-Cylinder pressure sensor for optimizing engine combustion and increasing fuel efficiency while reducing emissions.
Kavlico, a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies
(CST) and an operation of Schneider Electric has developed an
In-Cylinder pressure sensor for optimizing engine combustion,
increasing fuel efficiency while reducing emissions.
The
sensor assists with the timing and delivery of the fuel by providing
accurate pressure information to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to
control fuel injection pulses, enhancing combustion, control, and
cylinder pressure management while reducing gaseous and particulate
emissions all the while improving fuel consumption. The
sensor utilizes a thin film titanium oxynitride (TiON) sense element in
an all-welded, hermetically sealed, stainless steel housing. The robust
package design is ideally suited for hostile environments. Pressure
ranges are available from 0-200 through 0-300 Bar. The
sensor operates on 5 Vdc and provides a linear amplified analog output
of 0.5 to 4.5 Vdc proportional to pressure as standard with other
custom output options. The sensor is impervious to electromagnetic
interference (EMI). The sensor has a small probe OD of
8mm and the probe can be specified up to 100mm in length. The sense
element is located at the tip of the sensor, ensuring a highly accurate
and fast output response time.
