Centrifugal Pump

Centrifugal pumps are designed to transfer both corrosive and non-corrosive fluids at maximum hydraulic efficiencies. Centrifugal pumps are not self-priming and must be used in applications where flooded suction exists. These pumps can not be run dry.

Centrifugal Pumps

Operating Principle:

Centrifugal pumps are used primarily for the transfer or circulation of fluids. A suction port on the pump centerline provides a means for fluid to be drawn into the pump body. The fluid is then accelerated by a rotating vane impeller that is fixed mechanically to a shaft and driven either by an electric motor or a pulley. The fluid becomes available at the pump discharge port at an elevated pressure.

Centrifugal pumps do not pump air and are therefore not self priming. Once primed, centrifugal pumps can lift fluid through the suction line provided there is enough suction head available in the application.

Can centrifugal pumps run dry?

In general, no. Centrifugal pumps may have two types of seals: lip or mechanical face seals. There is the potential for damage if the seals run dry.

What is the expected life of a pump?

It varies greatly with the type of motor, type of seal and application conditions. Seal kits, motor kits, and DC motor brush kits are available as repair parts.

Given a particular hydraulic system, can a pump produce one flow at two different pressures?

No. The flow of a fluid within a hydraulic system is a function of the pressure. For any given pressure there is only one corresponding flow rate.

Are brushless DC motors available?

Yes. Nearly any type of motor can be adapted upon request.

Are pumps available that have special agency approval?

Yes. FDA and NSF approved materials are available in some models. Pumps can be designed to specific requirements.
