Life-extending, Cold Press & Forging Die Steels

Hitachi Metals' unique cold die steel, SLD-MAGIC, has revolutionized the metal forming and tooling industry. In keeping with its stated business objectives, Hitachi Metals has developed a cost reducing, eco-friendly alternative to existing cold die steels that actually extends the life of cold press and forging dies.

The demand for greater use of hard-to-form, high-tensile steel has increased in such industries as the automotive industry for the production of lighter weight car bodies. However, previous generation die steel characteristics reduced machinability during fabrication of the metal mold.

In answer to this production issue, Hitachi Metals has achieved a major performance breakthrough with its new alloy die steel, SLD-MAGIC, which incorporates a precipitation-strengthened composition (not previously used) in its design.

Comparison tests against conventional cold-working die steel, such as 8% Cr steel, showed that SLD-MAGICnot only reduced the number of machining processes by approximately 35%, but also helped to conserve tooling resources through the considerably longer life span achieved with the new metal molds.

Receiving the Nippon Grand Prize at the 49th Annual Best New Products Award, SLD-MAGIChas influenced the production of heretofore cost prohibitive high-tensile steel, a key ingredient in making lighter weight cars. The positive eco-outcome is improved fuel efficiency and the conservation of our natural resources.

Other benefits of SLD-MAGIC:

  • Prevents scuffing of high-tensile steels during bending and drawing
  • Reduces reworking man-hours through minimal heat and surface treatment deformations
  • Shortens mold processing time via enhanced machinability
  • Lowers tool expenses by extending cutting tool lifespan
  • Considerably prolongs life span of molds

SLD-MAGIChas been a proven performer in such applications as:

  • Bending and blanking dies for automotive parts
  • Blanking dies for electrical parts
  • Hydroforming dies
  • Cold press dies

Flatbed plotter cutting offers the advantage of producing prototypes or low volume production without the expense of tooling. Kentex has two plotters that use different methods of applying the force to the blade that cuts the material. They can produce small and intricate parts from adhesives and thin materials as well as parts from thicker materials.

Material such as polyethylene and PETG can be cut scored to allow folding, papers and paperboard materials can be pressure or cut scored for folding. Kentex will cut material you supply, including printed items, or will source material and be a components vendor.

Types of products include:

  • Point of purchase advertising; including "stand ups" and displays.
  • Vinyl fleet markings, we have cut 120" long printed items.
  • Sequential number sets.
  • Machinery parts.
  • Thin material components composed of multiple materials such as clear shield with partial adhesive coverage.

OMAX® Corporation has announced the release of its Dual Pump Package, a fully integrated system that produces unprecedented cutting speed and power. The Dual Pump Package operates on the 3rd generation cutting model of OMAX Intelli-MAX® Software, which accommodates cutting at 80 hp utilizing two P4055V pumps.

The P4055V direct drive plunger pump operates at full power with a very low noise level and is driven by a variable speed electric motor for variable output pressure. Based on a single design platform, the pump delivers more than 90% of the electrical input power to the cutting nozzle and provides more cutting power per kilowatt than pumps using intensifier technology. Unlike intensifier pumps, the P4055V uses variable frequency drive (VFD) technology, which prevents the in-rush of currents upon starting the pump.

OMAX designed the Dual Pump Package for shops that specialize in cutting thick, difficult to machine materials and have high capacity production or multiple nozzle requirements. In addition to offering the highest cutting power on the market, the Dual Pump Package is a proven and reliable technology that operates both pumps at optimum efficiency and has an extended seal life in excess of 500 hours. Additionally, the system provides highly efficient, redundant pump operation and permits users to switch between standard and high power operation to ensure the best operation for each application.

OMAX believes in manufacturing the best machines and accessories possible with the best software available, and works to continually develop cutting-edge technology and innovative software for its customers. As a result, each OMAX product comes with the OMAX Technology Guarantee, which provides software upgrades for all existing customers at no additional charge.
