LED Light Pipe Assembly
VCC's LMS Series Litepipe® provides display panel moisture seal and 180° viewing angle. This lens and Litepipe® unit was developed to provide moisture sealing and dust control for display panels when the LED is attached to a circuit board.
VCC's LMS Series Litepipe® provides display panel moisture seal and 180° viewing angle. This lens and Litepipe® unit was developed to provide moisture sealing and dust control for display panels when the LED is attached to a circuit board.
Currently, the moisture sealing of a lightpipe to a display panel requires the use of RTV-type adhesive. When applying glue for sealing, special precautions must be taken to avoid creating air gaps that would allow sealed joints to leak. Glues are not only difficult to apply but their adhesion to a Litepipe® surface will change the flow of the light pattern. This also causes light leakage resulting in reduction of light emitted by the Litepipe®. In addition, the output surface of a lightpipe alone whether flat, concave, or convex projects little or no sidelight. This gluing method results in serious assembly problems and less than effective panel displays.
VCC's LMS Series Litepipe® and lens unit is designed for use with surface mount LEDs as well as standard thru-hole LEDs, horizontally or vertically circuit board mounted.
The Litepipes® are molded from an optical grade acrylic plastic for clarity and optimum light transmission. The Litepipe® tooling is highly polished providing a smooth, scratch-free surface to the finished Litepipe®. This produces an optimum surface for maximum light refraction and ultimate transmission.
The Litepipe® is tubular in shape attached to a lens. The lens is fitted with a gasket that provides sealing for both moisture and dust. Panel assembly is easily accomplished. Slip the unit through a .281" panel opening and slide the retaining ring over the Litepipe® barrel. While holding the lens surface tightly against the panel, press the ring on using a 5/16" deep socket. The gasket is compressed as the ring is forced into place against the rear of the panel. This leaves the circuit board free from attachment to the display panel allowing for easy board insertion or removal.
Tests by an independent testing laboratory have shown that the LMS lens unit meets NEMA 3 requirements providing an effective seal against water and dust. In addition to the water tests, the unit and its retaining system have been tested up to 6Gs of shock and from 0 to 2000 Hz of vibration. Tests also included storage and operating temperature ((-40°C to +85°C), solar, ice and UV). The conclusion attained upon completion of these tests was that the LMS Series exceeded all test criteria.
With Fresnel rings, the light is fully dispersed over the entire surface of the low-profile lens while providing up to 180° of viewing angle. These components are available in an array of colors. In addition, the units' variety of lengths span a wide range of distances for use between the display panel and circuit board mounted LED.
- Application - CLIPLITE assembly meets NEMA 3 conditions for moisture and dust. Because there is no physical connection between the light pipe and PCB mounted LED, the circuit board can be installed or removed without disturbing the panel display.
- Versatility - CLIPLITE light pipe assembly provides a method of transmitting the light from PCB mounted LEDs to the front display panel. Both styles of LEDs, surface mount, 3mm and 5mm standard packages can be displayed in this manner.
- Brightness - CLIPLITE increases the apparent brightness and viewing angle of a PCB mounted LED. Light pipe transmits the light from the source to the lens, which in turn disperses the light up to 180 degrees.
- Installation - CLIPLITE light pipe and lens assembly are easily installed. Pass assembly thru panel opening and press on retaining ring to secure unit to the panel. Slide PCB into position aligning LED with the end of the light pipe.
Specifications:
- Material: Light pipe assembly Light pipe - Acrylic (Clear Optical Grade) Lens - Polycarbonate, Seal - J-Von Ring - Polypropylene (black) (U.L. Listed Materials) DESIGN: Low profile lens assembly with moisture seal and light pipe.
- Mounting: Mounts in a .281" (7.22mm) hole on 3/8" centers. Panel thickness 1/32" to 1/8". Compression of the seal is accomplished by pressing the retaining ring into place. STANDOFF: Use standoff to adjust height of standard LED above the PCB in order to maintain a maximum of .050" clearance between light pipe and LED. See STD Series data sheet.

LED Light Pipes & Panel Lenses
VCC's LSV Series Litepipe® is designed to provide a method of transmitting the light from a circuit board mounted LED to a display panel and, with the use of a lens, produce 180° viewing angle.
VCC's LSV Series Litepipe® is designed to provide a method of transmitting the light from a circuit board mounted LED to a display panel and, with the use of a lens, produce 180° viewing angle.
Present methods of transmitting the light of a PCB-mounted LED to a front panel are less than acceptable aesthetically and physically. The output surface of a lightpipe, whether it is flat, concave or convex, projects little or no sidelight. Standard PCB-mounted LEDs have been used in conjunction with panel lenses; however, unless the LED is fully inserted into the lens, sidelight and viewing angle are seriously reduced. A similar problem occurs with a PCB-mounted LED is not fully inserted directly through a hole in the display panel.
VCC's LSV Series Litepipe® is specifically designed for use with surface mount LEDs as well as standard 3mm and 5mm size PCB, thru-hole vertical or horizontal mounted LEDs. The Litepipes® are molded from an optical grade acrylic plastic for clarity. The Litepipe® tooling is highly polished providing a smooth, scratch-free surface to the finished Litepipe®. This finish allows for maximum light refraction and ultimate transmission.
The Litepipe® is tubular in shape with an annular ring which, when engaged into the annular groove of a Litepipe® panel lens, affords a secure mounting to the display panel. This leaves the circuit board free from a mechanical interface with the display panel allowing for easy board insertion or removal. Panel lens and Litepipe® retaining rings are available for added stability in unusual shock and vibration conditions. Selected lengths of Litepipes® span a wide range of distances between the display panel and circuit board. The Fresnel rings of the Litepipe® lens mounts fully disperse the light over the entire surface of the lens while providing up to 180° of viewing angle.
- Application - CLIPLITE Light Pipe and Lense are available for use with both surface mount and standard packaged LEDs in 3mm and 5mm configurations. Because there is no physical connection between the light pipe and the PCB mounted LED, the circuit board can be installed or removed without disturbing the panel display.
- Brightness - CLIPLITE Light Pipe by itself has a limited angle of view. However, when used with VCC's fresnel lense the light is dispersed over the entire lense surface producing 180 degrees of viewing.
- Versatility - CLIPLITE Light Pipes and Lenses easily provide a means of transmitting the light from PCB mounted LEDs to the front display panel. Both styles of LEDs, surface mount and standard packages, can be displayed in this manner.
- Installation - CLIPLITE Light Pipe and Lense are easy to install. Insert the lense thru the panel opening and snap the light pipe into the lense. For added security in harsh environments, a retaining ring is available.
Specifications:
- Material: Light Pipe - Acrylic (Optical grade) Lense - Polycarbonate Ring - Polypropylene (U.L. Listed Materials)
- Design: LIGHT PIPE (3mm and 5mm) with annular ring and locking tab engages into the annular groove of VCC's low profile lense. Lense mounts the light pipe securely to the display panel and provides 180 degrees of viewing angle.
- Mounting:
- LIGHT PIPE 3mm - Mates with VCC's lenses model SMB 200 and SMQ 250. Panel mounting hole .171 (4.3mm) on 1/4" centers. Panel thickness 1/32" to 1/8". Light Pipe lengths from .200" to 1.200".
- LIGHT PIPE 5mm - Mates with VCC's lense model CLB 300 and SQB 400. Panel mounting hole .250 (6.35mm) on 3/8" centers. Panel thickness 1/32" to 1/4". Litepipe lengths from .360" to 1.360". For panels less than 3/16" use SPC 125 spacer.

RoHS LED Socket for PCB LED.
The PCH, PCV and SMD Series P-C-Lite® sockets provide a simplified method of connecting LEDs to circuit boards without directly soldering their leads.
The PCH, PCV and SMD Series P-C-Lite® sockets provide a simplified method of connecting LEDs to circuit boards without directly soldering their leads.
PCB mounting of single and multiple array LEDs has caused manufacturing problems ever since the LED was first introduced. These include but are not limited to overheating and failure of LEDs in soldering operations and inability to replace or change LEDs in existing fixed arrays in manufacturing or field service. In addition, fixed arrays that are currently available severely limit the engineer in design flexibility. All of these problems result in increased production costs and necessity of maintaining an extensive and expensive inventory.
VCC's single, dual, and triple mount LED sockets address these deficiencies. LEDs are now inserted directly into the sockets, no longer subject to high temperatures of IR ovens or wave soldering machines. These versatile sockets, used singularly or in combination, permit a variety of both number and various color selection of LEDs in the array. This reduces inventories of fixed arrays as well as allowing the engineer maximum flexibility in his array design. Single LEDs in the array can now be easily replaced or exchanged during the manufacturing process or in field service providing substantial savings in assembly, labor and equipment downtime.
These devices are available for both thru-hole and circuit board mounting. The PCH and PCV Series are used for horizontal and vertical thru-hole mounting respectively, while the SMD Series is used for horizontal surface mounting.
The sockets are molded from U.L. listed thermoplastic and contain tin-plated, phosphor-bronze contacts. A unique feature of the contacts allows them to automatically adjust to varying sizes and shapes of LED leads.
These sockets also allow for extensive flexibility in the choice of LEDs. This includes varying shapes such as round, rectangular etc., with the only requirement being dual leads on .100" centers. Further flexibility is even more apparent in the unit's unique capability in the mounting of IR and phototransistor type devices. Emitter and detector can now be mounted into the same socket side by side while being activated by use of a reflective surface on the outside of the box, thus simplifying measuring and counting applications.
Additional features for the PCH, PCV and SMD sockets include polarity identification, standoffs, lock type vibration security and multiple mounting of LEDs with the insertion of one socket. Applications range from circuit board status indicators, front panel illuminators, logic status indicators and fault detectors for troubleshooting of complex circuits.

LED Right Angle Mount
As a result of combining the requirements of the past with the needs of today, VCC has developed the PCH 175, a right angle circuit board mount for both bi-lead and tri-lead LEDs.
As a result of combining the requirements of the past with the needs of today, VCC has developed the PCH 175, a right angle circuit board mount for both bi-lead and tri-lead LEDs.
Since their initial introduction several years ago, right angle mounting of discrete, tri-lead, multicolor LEDs has been a major problem. There are two different lead frame configurations being produced today by LED manufacturers. LED frames place the leads in line on either .050" or .100" centers. Mounting of the tri-lead LED is much more difficult than the bi-lead device in these lead frame configurations. The leads require a 90 degree bend and are then inserted into the circuit board, held in position with special tools which must be removed after the completion of the soldering operations. These multiple tasks are labor intensive and expensive. Right angle plastic mounts are still being used to mount dual lead devices. Present day LEDs, however, are available in various configurations and are no longer limited to only round shapes with two leads.
The patented design of the PCH 175 permits the mounting of the bi-lead as well as both configurations of the tri-lead LED while still maintaining the LED on standard .250" centers. The PCH 175 forms the bi-leads to meet conventional .100" circuit board pad spacing. In addition, the PCH 175 forms and holds the tri-leads in a triangular pattern which conveniently staggers the length of the leads for easier insertion into the PC board.
Because of its unique versatility, the PCH 175 permits the mounting of both the tri-lead and bi-lead LEDs in combination with one another. This greatly increases the design engineer's latitude in the selection of color arrays and LEDs. The PCH 175 also serves as both a forming tool and mount in the installation of both bi-lead and tri-lead LEDs.
The design of the PCH 175 also includes tabs which lock the LED leads in position once formed by the housing, and a dove-tail interlocking feature which permits the mounts to be banded together in arrays. The device is manufactured with standoffs, which permit easy board cleaning of solder flux after wave soldering operations.
The PCH 175 is used in the mounting of diagnostic and logic indicator lights on circuit boards. The various styles of LEDs that can be accommodated include round, flanged, flangeless as well as rectangular shapes. As a result of these features, component inventory and manufacturing costs can be substantially reduced.
The PCH 175 housing is manufactured from a black thermoplastic material which has a UL listing of 94-V0.
Features:
- Right angle PCB mount for bi and tri-lead LEDs for use as logic and diagnostic indicators.
- Accommodates round and rectangular shapes of LEDs with or without flanges.
- Dove-tail interlock feature allows mounting of both mono and multi-colored LEDs.
- Mount forms LED leads which are locked into position by retaining tabs.
- Formed LED leads are staggered in their length permitting easier PCB insertion.
- Molded standoffs permit the easy cleaning of PCB after wave solding operation.

5mm LED Assembly
The Conxrite® CNX 410 Series is a solderless LED interconnector that provides a simplified method of electrically connecting panel mounted LEDs to a power source.
The Conxrite® CNX 410 Series is a solderless LED interconnector that provides a simplified method of electrically connecting panel mounted LEDs to a power source. Present connecting methods include soldering or crimping wires directly to the fragile LED leads, often resulting in their being damaged or broken. The vibration and shock while in transit, resulting from the weight of unsupported wire and harness suspended from the fragile LED leads causes work-hardening, metal fatigue and eventual failure of the electrical connection. An external resistor may also be included in the circuitry, soldered directly to the LED or added to an already cluttered circuit board. In addition, field service replacement of hard-wired LEDs can be very time consuming and expensive.
The Conxrite® with molded plastic body and self contained 0.5 watt resistor eliminates the necessity of an external resistor. Conxrite® with its incorporated ballast resistor can be used on circuits from 3 to 28 volts. Wiper contacts make for easy LED installation while compensating for varying sizes of leads. Conxrite® makes a positive connection with either panel-mounted lens mounts or the clip and ring LED mount.
The interconnector provides various methods of LED connection to power source circuitry, further simplifying assembly procedures. Standard interconnectors are offered in lengths of 4", 8", 12", 18" and 24" and include a locking header connector. Terminations are also available with stripped wire leads for terminal attachment or soldering directly to the circuit board.
Conxrite® requires no tools for assembly while providing a simple, fast press-fit connection to various Cliplite® style lenses. These include moisture sealing lenses or clip and ring mounted LEDs. In addition, use of the Conxrite® precludes the necessity of direct hard-wiring with its potential heat exposure and probable damage to the LED.
Conxrite® supports and stress-relieves the LED leads providing the stability necessary to eliminate the broken or damaged lead problem. In addition, panel LED push-back problems, typical of the clip and ring mount, are resolved, resulting in a more secure assembly. Data from vibration tests conducted under actual operating conditions indicated continual stability of the Conxrite® when subjected to forces of 2Gs, 4Gs and 6Gs from 0 to 2000 Hz.
The Conxrite® interconnector system also provides various means of connecting to a power source. A connector is included for quick attachment to a PCB-mounted header. The interconnector is available with stripped wire leads allowing attachment of various terminals or soldering directly to the PCB.
Conxrite® facilitates the preassembly of wiring harnesses, precluding the need for hard-wiring directly to the LED. This permits easy installation of LEDs in final assembly and replacement of defective LEDs in test and field service operations, both of which help lower costs.
- Versatility - Conxrite LED cable assemblies simplify interfacing between power source and display. Options include: LED - single or multi-color. Wire -size, color, length. Termination - header connector locking, single or dual row. Terminals, ring or spade type.
- Brightness - Conxrite increases viewing angle to 180° and enhances the apparent brightness of panel mounted LEDs. Mono, multi-color, infrared and photo detection devices can be displayed in the manner. Accommodates LED output from 20 to 20,000mcd.
