Probes for multi-axis and hi-speed machine tools

Renishaw OMP40 and OMP60 touch-trigger probes bring greater process control, higher machine utilization and Lean efficiencies to multi-axis/multi-tasking machine tools and high-speed, small-spindle-taper machines. Ultra-compact design maximizes application versatility, while unique programming simplifies installation.

Carried in the tool magazine, OMP40 and OMP60 optical transmission probes enable automated part set-up and in-process gaging for faster, Leaner, more precise and consistent (1µm repeatability) part making. Battery-powered 360° infrared transmission avoids wiring complexity and allows probe operation in any spindle orientation, making possible automated multi-face/axis processing without refixturing. In-process probing automatically resets machine coordinates for changing processes, axes and part faces to enable in-process measurement feedback and compensation – all without operator intervention. Compact design, application versatility and simplified installation/set-up allow easy upgrade of machine tools to automated probing advantages.

The OMP60 probe fits small to large machine tools, providing up to 6 meter transmission range from a unit measuring just 63 mm diameter by 76 mm long. An advanced state-of-the-art modulated optical transmission method offers the highest level of resistance to light interference. Designed to withstand the harshest machine tool environments, the OMP60 features IPX8 standard sealing and high resistance to false triggering induced by shock and vibration.

Even more compact, only 40 mm diameter by 50 mm long, the OMP40 is especially suited to machining centers fitted with small HSK and high-speed small-taper spindles. The OMP40 length matches typical tooling lengths on such machines, bringing the significant advantages of probing for the first time to small machines. The OMP40provides 3 meter transmission range.

Both probes offer simplified installation. The probes are programmable though Renishaw's proven trigger logic, a unique and simple method that allows users to program probe options without accessing probe internals. This eliminates the risk of subsequent damage due to coolant and debris ingress. User-programmable parameters for multiple turn-on/turn-off options allow easy optimization for specific machine applications.

Industry-leading battery life minimizes machine downtime and maintenance costs. At typical levels of probe use, battery life in excess of 6 months can be expected.

The probes are fully compatible with existing Renishaw optical systems and can be used with high-speed, single-touch or double-touch probing routines.

About Renishaw:

For over 30 years, Renishaw has been an innovator in metrology, the science of measurement, enabling measurements to be taken to international standards.

The company's first product, the touch-trigger probe had been invented by David McMurtry, now Sir David McMurtry, Chairman and Chief Executive, to solve a specific inspection requirement for the Olympus engines used on Concorde. The first Renishaw company was established in 1973 by him and John Deer, now Deputy Chairman. This innovative product went on to revolutionise post-process inspection of machined components.

Today, Renishaw is leading another measurement revolution!

The first product to take advantage of Renscan5™ technology is REVO™, the first in a family of measuring head and probe systems, which has redefined the industry standard for scanning systems on co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs).

Inspection throughput is maximised whilst a high level of system accuracy is maintained. In relatively new market sectors for the company, Renishaw's expertise in precision manufacturing has already influenced the dental market and the way restorations are carried out.

The company continues to work with the bio-medical profession in the analysis of organic and inorganic substances and how the analysis itself is undertaken. Each of the Group's Products Divisions has provided a mission statement to reinforce its contribution to the Group's overall operations.

OMAX Corporation - Custom Cut Machine Inc.
OMAX Corporation
Custom Cut Machine Inc.

Custom Cut Machine Inc, based in British Columbia, Canada, replaced their Flow CNC waterjet, driven by the vendors own CAM software in June 2007 with an OMAX 80160. They had been considering a CAM system upgrade since 2005, as although the previous software worked fairly well there was room for improvement with nesting efficiency and ease of use.

Custom Cut Machine Inc.

Lyle Paulson, President said; "I spent three years evaluating the market. I finally focussed on three systems over a six month period, and spent a day with each vendor. Two of the systems were up to 10% less efficient than JETCAM, which was recommended by OMAX. Also, I felt that they were clumsy, and the staff did not seem to have the same in-depth technical knowledge about their own products as the JETCAM dealer, NestOne Solutions. We weighed out all of the pluses - support, machine support, efficiency, and JETCAM came out way ahead."

JETCAM Expert was installed in June 2007, along with JETCAM's free form high performance nesting module, which outperformed the previous CAM system by over 30%, with one order which previously spanned 54 sheets now taking just 38. The installation process was seamless, with the software installed and generating 100% accurate NC code the same day.

Training was performed shortly after installation, but as the software proved so intuitive they were able to learn the majority of features prior to the training starting. Said Lyle; "We were able to learn around 80% of JETCAM's day to day functionality just by using the system before the trainer even arrived."

What was immediately noticeable was the reduction in time spent using the CAM system - through every stage from part import to NC code generation. Lyle added; "JETCAM just frees up my time. If I want to change a parameter of a part on a nest I can do so without having to go back to square one. With other systems, once you've nested, you've got what you've got and that's it."

Machine cycle time has also reduced, and Lyle attributes this to the close synergy between JETCAM and OMAX; "We had one program that previously took 10 hours to cut. With JETCAM we can cut it in 9.2 hours, because of features such as limiting traverse times and JETCAM's sequencing We have far fewer machine stops due to parts becoming dislodged as we can optimize the sequence to suit the stability of the nest."

Like many companies today, Custom Cut choose to run both PC and Apple computers in their company. With the current Apple machines based on Intel CPUs, Lyle runs JETCAM on both a PC and an Apple, under emulation mode; "We have a dual core PC and a quad core Apple. JETCAM is the fastest CAM system I've seen on a PC, yet it's 5 times faster on the quad core, even though it's running on an emulator."

JETCAM also requires less support than the previous CAM system, with almost all questions being of a 'how do I' nature rather than technical problems, all of which are answered quickly by telephone. Lyle noted; "The JETCAM and OMAX systems marry so well together that they simply require less support overall." Custom Cut has also benefited from features received under maintenance, and will make further benefits from the 2008 v16 release due to increased CAD file import support and additional sequencing flexibility.

With metal prices doubling in the first six months of 2008, Custom Cut are now winning business purely on the savings generated by the combination of JETCAM and OMAX. Lyle concluded; "Three years ago we were the only waterjet company within 50 miles, whereas now there are several. We won a $17k order which was solely due to a $5k saving on material through efficient nests. JETCAM paid for itself within six months, which is the fastest return of investment on software I've ever had, and I know that there's a tonne of features that we are not yet taking full advantage of. We also have a laser and a wood router which we are also considering driving with JETCAM for 2D work."

Machine in Use:

· OMAX 80160 CNC Waterjet

Benefits Achieved:

· Return on investment in just six months

· User trained himself on 80% of system before trainer arrived

· Over 10% more efficient than other CAM systems benchmarked and over 30% more efficient than previous CAM

· Can change any part on a nest without having to rework complete nest

· Machine cycle time reduced by 8%

· CAM system runs on both PC and Apple computers

· Stable product due to relationship between machine vendor and CAM vendor

· Less support needed than previous system

· Plan to drive laser and router with JETCAM in the future

· Have already received updates under maintenance and will benefit from v16
