Custom AC Motors & DC Motors & Gear Motors

LEESON is a leading designer and manufacturer of application-specific AC and DC motors and gearmotors. Often, this involves collaboration among our application, design and production engineers, and our customer's product engineers. Our interactive Design Center at our Grafton, Wisconsin headquarters is ideally suited for this purpose.

Custom AC Motors & DC Motors & Gear Motors

The LEESON Design Center has changed the rules regarding electric motor application and custom motor design. In fact, through the power of a mutual design team, you'll find that there are few restraints on your efforts to create an optimum motor solution.

The concept. We knew there had to be a better way, one that allows your intimate knowledge of the application to be combined "real-time" with our mechanical and electrical design skills. The result is the Motor Design Center, located at our corporate headquarters in Grafton, Wisconsin.

A synectic design environment. Here we created a unique environment, specially designed to foster "synectic creativity," wherein experienced specialists exchange ideas and technical knowledge freely, leading to mutual solutions. The key to making it work is interactivity and teamwork, all around the table. The selection of your own team members is critical for best results. Decision-makers from all disciplines should be represented, including design engineering, manufacturing, quality, materials, and others.

The Motor Design Center is the ultimate solution forum. LEESON's full corporate resources and the latest design technology are at-hand to speed the way to the optimum, most effective motor solution. Using online, computer-aided design technology, visual displays, databases of electrical performance and mechanical characteristics, as well as hands-on activities with actual motor components, our two teams will work to literally "build" the custom motor you need - all in a matter of hours. And a few days later, the functional prototype will be in your hands for testing, evaluation and final approval.

SMART TEAM™

Special Motor Action Response Team. When it isn't practical for your team to visit the Motor Design Center, we can bring our customer motor design capabilities to you via the LEESON SMART TEAM™. While the make-up of the SMART TEAM™ varies from project-to-project (based upon your needs), it normally includes experienced LEESON personnel from design engineering, process engineering, quality and sales. Their mission is to collaborate with their counterparts in your company in defining – and delivering – the best motor solution for your application.

LEESON'S Delivery in Time™ Program. After the right motor is developed for your application, LEESON's Delivery In Time™ program is the tool used to ensure that we will have the right quantity of motors on your dock on the right day. We can produce custom motors to match your production schedule in quantities fewer than 100 or up to thousands of units per shipment.

Strategic Motor Sourcing Alliance (SMSA™) Program. This "clean sheet of paper" program is intended for customers whose needs are outside the scope of DIT. Under SMSA™, we work side-by-side with you, creating the bundle of products and services that best meets your needs - needs that often extend well beyond priority production slots and reduced lead times.

As just one example of the power of SMSA, we consistently deliver highly custom motors within 13 working days after our customers' final approval of electrical and mechanical parameters.

Parker Hannifin/Electromechanical Automation - MPJ High-Torque Servo Motor
Parker Hannifin/Electromechanical Automation
MPJ High-Torque Servo Motor

Part of Parker's MaxPlusPlus (MPP) servo motor family, the MPJ is designed for the demanding applications found in today's high-performance servo systems.

MPJ High-Torque Servo Motor

The secret to the MPJ's extra boost of inertia is its special inertia flywheel, which adds from three to 10 times the inertia of a standard MPP servo motor. This flywheel replaces the more expensive gearbox Parker traditionally added to the motor for applications where the customer has a high load-to-rotor inertia mismatch. Now, on applications where customers would normally add a gearhead, they can simply use an MPJ motor, saving money and eliminating the speed constraints normally associated with a gearhead.

Quick links:

The length of an MPJ is one stack longer than the standard MPP to which the inertia is added. (For example, the length of the MPJ1152 motor is equivalent to that of an MPP1153.) Parker takes the stator and magnet stack of an MPP1152 and inserts it into an MPP1153 housing with an 1153 shaft. The "extra" rotor space on the motor shaft is now filled with an inertia flywheel.

  • MPJ motor features include:
    • Segmented core technology - 40% higher torque
    • Potted stator design - improved thermal efficiency
    • Sizes 92, 100, 115 and 142
    • Continuous torque: 1.3 Nm (12 lb-in) to 20 Nm (173 lb-in)
    • Continuous stall torque: 1.5 Nm (14 lb-in) to 26 Nm (230 lb-in)
    • Peak torque: 5 Nm (44 lb-in) to 82 Nm (726 lb-in)
    • Brushless construction
    • High-performance neodymium magnets
    • Thermistor protection
    • Resolver, incremental encoder, or absolute encoder (single- or multi-turn)
    • 24-volt failsafe brake (optional)
    • Rotatable right-angle PS-style connectors
    • Optional IP65 shaft seal
    • Two-year warranty

  • Common customizations include:
    • Shafts (longer, shorter, diameter change, hollow shafts)
    • Front flange (bolt circle, pilot, NEMA dimensions)
    • Motors coatings (white, PTFE, steel-it grey)
    • Non-standard feedback devices
    • Special connectors
    • Special stator windings
