LM200™ Laser Transmitter

K-TEK, a leading manufacturer of state-of-the-art level instrumentation for liquid and bulk solids detection, today announced the LM200™ laser transmitter designed for measurement of dry bulk solids, opaque liquids, and slurries at distances of up to 200 feet (60 meters). The unit features an advanced timing system and sophisticated, self-correcting signal processing functions that allow it to accurately and reliably measure level, distance, and position in the harshest of conditions. The LM200 works even in the presence of dust, vapors, or turbulence, as are commonly found in large silos of coal, grain, or plastics, and in underground mines or quarries. The system¹s all-digital design provides speed and accuracy in a compact unit. A rugged, powder coated aluminum enclosure, rated for IP65 or NEMA 4X, with CL II and III, Div 1 and 2, Gr E, F, G dust ignition proof ratings to FM and CSA, ensures operation in a variety of challenging environments. Stainless steel dust tubes prevent dust build-up and protect the optical lens from being coated.

"K-TEK's laser measurement technology is designed specifically for the difficult and unpredictable conditions found in most industrial environments," said Ivo Radanov, Product Manager for Lasers and Ultrasonics at K-TEK Corp. "Dust, vibration, and constantly changing levels with great reposing angles are a challenge for most non-contact measurement technologies, such as ultrasonic and open air radar, due to their inherent 'beam spread' nature (9° to 24°). The LM200 combines accurate, long distance laser measurements with no beam divergence (less than 0.2°). Therefore, in many applications, the laser goes beyond the point where other technologies stop. The advanced dust penetration software allows the unit to adapt to a variety of tough environmental conditions. It's robustness and accuracy, as well as the advantages of laser technology, are all rolled into one package. Add in the very competitive price and you have a winner in the LM200."

State-of-the-Art Signal Processing and Laser Technologies

The LM200 features an all-digital design that provides speed and accuracy in a compact unit. The system architecture allows the software to perform distance measurements quickly, then dedicate more time for sophisticated signal processing, data analysis, and distance display. Last pulse detection means the LM200 can select true signals from among the many that are reflected from dust clouds, agitator blades, or other obstacles. Color compensation corrects for weak or excessive return signals. Variable gain allows the LM200 to select the best return signal in quickly changing visibility conditions, such as dust, vapors, and materials of different colors. Such capabilities are especially useful for underground mines and smelters where high dust levels and excessive vibration can render other non-contact technologies inoperable.

The LM200 transmitter takes measurements using a laser with an extremely small wavelength of ~1 micrometer. As a result, the unit has virtually no angle divergence, even over long distances. It can be narrowly focused, ensuring that it does not pick up interference from surrounding objects. The system can also measure oblique angles with pinpoint accuracy. This allows it to operate within complex vessels, even if they contain internal structures. The LM200 is also immune to reflections and echoes, thus providing consistent performance on solids and total immunity to "cone up" and "cone down" variations in the material being measured.

The LM200 is a stand-alone unit that requires no calibration or special configuration. This ensures users are quickly up and running. The unit is easily programmed with a Palm handheld device or a desktop/laptop personal computer. Convenient, portable mounting options allow users to position the laser in any direction. K-TEK uses Class 1 lasers, making the LM200 products safe for the human eye. No special safety glasses are required.

RF/Fiber Optic Transmitter

The MP-5000TX is a RF/fiber optic Transmitter designed for antenna remoting and broadband RF transmission applications using singlemode fiber optic cable. The transmitter uses a high efficiency Distributed Feedback(DFB) laser diode with an operating wavelength selected from the ITU CWDM or DWDM grid. The transmitter provides low noise and high dynamic range performance over a wide operating temperature range. Temperature stability is controlled with an integrated thermo-electric cooler (TEC). The transmitter provides status monitoring through the use of an onboard processor that communicates with a host computer over an RS-232 I/O interface. The I/O parameters include laser bias current, temperature and alarm status. When the MP-5000TX RF/Fiber Optic Transmitter is linked with the MP-5000RX 12 GHz RF/Fiber Optic Receiver, the combination provides an excellent choice for your ultra-wideband RF to Fiber Optic conversion applications. The MP-5000TX can also be paired with the MP-2320RX to provide a high performance 3 GHz link with 0.0 dB link gain.

Optical Isolators

Optical Isolators provide lasers with immunity from back-reflection, thereby improving the signal to noise ratio for laser diode based transmitters. This is especially important for high data rate transceivers and transponders, or those devices requiring long span lengths between transceiver pairs. All of their isolators are based on dichroic polarizing glass and Faraday rotating crystals for highest performance. These devices are available in a single stage, 1.5 stages, or double stages, with multiple stages providing progressively higher isolation.

LightPath offers isolators in various form factors including: Cylindrical, Surface-Mount, and Sub-Mount. In addition, they manufacture isolators with either an epoxy-free optical path or with a laminated core. The primary benefits of their approach to manufacturing include reduced costs as a result of higher yields, throughput and product consistency as a result of automation. LightPath is capable of delivering a total solution to its OEM customers, from prototype and development contracting through high-volume production.

Tx™ Isolators

  • Metro, access, long haul and hybrid fiber coax
  • High volume wafer-scale manufacturing
  • High isolation, low insertion loss
  • Square form factor for ease of mounting
  • One stage, 1.5 stage and double stage isolation

Many of today's transmitters require optical isolators to eliminate back reflections and feedback in the laser diode. This feedback and noise creates jitters in the system. LightPath's Tx™ Isolators are manufactured in a very economical and scalable process. By utilizing a wafer based platform you can be assured of premium performance at an outstanding value.

LightPath's Tx™ Isolators are manufactured with a latched garnet, which eliminates the need and extra cost associated with traditional magnet. Latched garnet has the orientation of its magnetic dipoles frozen by poling in an external magnetic field at an elevated temperature.

Oasis™ Monolithic Isolator and Aspheric Lens

  • Small form factor
  • Alignment of one optical component
  • Diffraction limited performance
  • Typical isolation > 40 dB (1.5 stage)

Oasis™ provides a compact solution by combining both an aspheric lens and an isolator. Built as a monolithic design, it offers diffraction limited performance optics along with outstanding isolation. The designs are ideal for small form factor laser diodes in both single and multi-channel configurations.

The Surface Mount configuration offers smaller form factors and exceptional value. The typical Surface Mount Oasis™ contains a 0.55 NA Finite Conjugate lens that couples a laser directly into a single mode fiber.

The Micro Fixture Bench configuration offers a stainless steel holder, which can be easily mounted and aligned with standard pick and place equipment and then soldered or welded into the package. It contains a 0.8 NA or 0.6 NA collimating lens, perfect for collimating most laser diodes. The isolator offers a choice of single, 1.5 and double stages of isolation dependent on your requirements.
