Low Lead Stabilizers in PVC Compounds

Lead stabilizers have been commonly used in PVC compounds for many years to obtain increased durability and lifetime. The primary reason for adding lead to formulations of PVC wire and cable insulation, is that the PVC insulation could not maintain physical, thermal, and electrical capabilities without some type of stabilizer. Lead is very cost effective, and efficient, however there are growing concerns about it's chronic toxicity that is pushing ahead the research on alternative stabilizers. It has been well established that ingestion of lead can have negative health effects on the human body. Most people are not prone to ingesting lead, but children can sometimes be tempted to chew on, or eat unusual things. The health effects of ingesting lead especially in children include kidney damage, colic, anemia, mental and physical developmental delays, and increased blood pressure. In the United States, California Proposition 65 imposes regulatory burdens on products containing lead. Prop 65 is less stringent than some European standards and specifications. The trend is for increasingly tight control in PVC insulation over the use of heavy metals, including the recycling of heavy metals. The majority of electronic products sold in Europe, must be lead free by July 1, 2006. International OEM's are increasingly becoming more sensitive to the issue, and are expecting their suppliers to develop phase-out plans. Manufacturers in all regions, will need to prepare for eliminating lead. Even companies not directly affected by the legislation still need to assess the effects of changes in the supply chain customer demand. "Our objective at Quail Electronics is to continue to research low lead, or no lead alternatives to providing PVC insulation in the power cords we supply our customers. We are obviously mindful and concerned about the health issues, but we also want to stay ahead of the curve by knowing and complying with any legislation or regulatory requirements on this issue. We are currently stocking and supplying several low lead power cords, and we continue to add more to the list. Our objective is to come into compliance with all safety requirements well before the deadlines. We want our customers to know that we are aware of the issues and we are aggressively taking action." 4 Axis CNC Vertical Machining Center

Tekna's Model TK441/2 Four Axis Machining Center enables companies to increase productivity and reduce expenses by replacing two traditional machines and two operators with one Tekna machine and one operator. It is designed for drilling, conventional milling and copy milling operations in aluminum profiles. Other materials include steel profiles, plain or steel reinforced PVC profiles and various other plastics or wood.

Quality

The TK441/2 represents the knowledge of over forty-two years experience building machinery for the fabrication of aluminum extrusions. All welded steel fame construction, precision ground and hardened guides, high RPM electrospindles, extremely fast axes travel speeds, and standard conversational graphical user interface all combine to form a high quality machine that is robust and easy to use.

Application

The TK441/2 has been well received in a wide variety of industries. With over 50 machines installed worldwide, they are employed in the production of curtainwall, windows, doors, trains, cars, busses, trucks, aircraft, furniture, power couplings, telecommunications infrastructure, and more. Versions range in length from 11 feet to over 78 feet X axis capacity and have been offered in both single gantry and dual gantry configurations.

Productivity

With standard TWIN mode (pendulum) capability and optional parallel pneumatic vise clamping, the TK441/2 is really two machines in one. While one side of the machine is working, the other may be loaded and unloaded. By utilizing this approach to machining, companies are increasing productivity and reducing expenses by replacing two traditional machines and two operators with one Tekna machine and one operator. Combined with extremely fast motion on all axes (up to 4.3 feet per second), automatic clamps positioning for quick changeover between jobs, the ability to call programs through bar code scan or electronic data interchange with production systems, and the capability to link to robotic material handling systems, every aspect of the machine is designed for lean manufacturing.

    ATB Brush Tool Implementation

    ATB Brush Tool Implementation

Optimal life and cut will be obtained by finding the proper balance between brush speed (RPM), part penetration, and line speed.

The Maximum Safe Free Speed (MSFS) printed on the brush is not the ideal working speed. In most operations, a lower speed will prove more efficient. Optimal operating speed is typically 50-70% less than the MSFS. Lower speeds and lighter pressure give longer brush life, generate less heat, and require less power.

Where higher brush speeds and pressures are required, it is recommended to use a more aggressive brush tool. This may be done by increasing abrasive grit size, changing filament shape, increasing fill density, decreasing trim length, increasing the brush diameter, and/or slowing line speed.

Download: ATB Operating Parameters Reference Card (800kb)

    • Depth of penetration should be set while the brush tool is rotating at operational speed.
    • Precise edge radius can be controlled by adjusting the line speed.
    • Slower line speed results in more aggressive brushing action.
    • Surface speeds should always be kept below 3500 surface speed per minute wet and 2500 surface speed per minute dry.

    Tool Path Considerations:

For consistent results in an automated environment, careful consideration should be given when implementing ATB brush tools.

    Tool Path:

The brush should start and finish its path completely off the part.

    Rotational Direction:

The initial pass of the brush tool should be rotated in the direction opposite of the cutting tool that created the burr.

    Part Coverage:

There are two different ways to efficiently finish a part. The ideal (Figure A) is to use a brush which is approximately three inches larger than the work piece. If a smaller brush is required due to application restrictions, (Figure B) the centerline of the brush tool should be aligned with the targeted edge.

    Brush Tool Wear Compensation:

The following are the four most commonly used methods to compensate for brush tool wear.

    • Automatic Indexing is a technique involving indexing the brush tool in the Z axis after a predetermined number of parts. It is a commonly used technique in CNC machining centers.
    • Probing is a technique that helps maintain a constant depth of penetration. It is a feature specific to certain machines.
    • Amperage (Amp) Metering is a technique that consistently monitors the amp reading to maintain consistent pressure. This feature requires the addition of an amp meter to the process.
    • Manual Indexing is a technique where the operator manually adjusts for the wear on the brush using historical statistical data.

    Coolant:

ATB filaments are designed with heat stabilizers and are able to withstand most applications dry.

However, coolant is always recommended for applications on very thin parts, requiring high penetration, and/or high speeds.

Coolant provides an ideal working environment for ATB filaments.
