Health Hazard Evaluations

Through the Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) program, NIOSH staff evaluate noise exposures in many workplaces. From 1986-1997, NIOSH conducted 27 HHEs that addressed noise as a hazard in industries such as agriculture, construction, manufacturing, transportation and service. During these evaluations NIOSH may monitor noise exposures, survey worker medical information, conduct worker audiometric evaluations, assess worker use of hearing loss protection devices and evaluate hearing loss prevention policies and standards. The results of the evaluations help companies assess workers exposure to noise, evaluate and plan noise controls and develop employee education programs on hearing loss prevention. For a summary of the noise HHEs call 1-800-35-NIOSH and request NIOSH publication 99-106. Noise Engineering Controls

Investigation of Technology for Hearing Loss Prevention
There are numerous barriers to the prevention of hearing loss among miners. It is anticipated that increased on-the-spot awareness of hazardous noise levels and the availability of better-suited hearing protectors will provide a degree of protection beyond what is currently attained. NIOSH is evaluating practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors.

Definition and Assessment of Engineering Noise Controls
This project will conduct a survey of the availability and effectiveness of engineering noise controls to be found in the mines and on construction sites and assess the lack of noise controls, as well. It will develop a noise-control prioritization for mining and construction, conduct a best practice workshops, and prepare publications for dissemination in print and electronically. As a result of this project, it should be more feasible to deploy engineering noise control in the mining and construction industries; and, thus, reduce the present noise burden carried by miners and construction workers. Noise control is the best way to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.

Power Plant Noise Control

Sound Enclosures are a highly effective means of reducing the noise emanating from industrial or mechanical equipment. Also known as noise control enclosures, acoustic enclosures, sound booths, steel enclosures, or machine and equipment enclosures these self supporting noise barriers enclose noisy equipment without limiting access or impeding machine function. We offer options such as acoustic rated doors and windows, fully removable wall and roof panels, passive or forced air ventilation packages, electrical and lighting, and turnkey installations. Common equipment applications include compressors, generators, blowers, hydraulic pumps, industrial fans, vibratory bowl feeders, routers, print presses, plastic grinders, and many other noise offenders. Let us design an enclosure to meet your noise reduction goals. ArtUSA Noise Control Products, Inc. Noise Control Barrier Walls are engineered, modular sound panels designed for high sound transmission loss of outdoor noise. Typical customers have chillers, substations, fans, blowers, compressors, air conditioners and other outdoor mechanical equipment cause disturbing noise at its neighbor's property line. Our engineered sound panels are specifically designed and constructed with environmentally durable composite construction that absorbs sound energy and shields offensive noises.

Over the past decade ArtUSA has designed hundreds of power plant noise control. Employing every type of combustion turbine such as the Siemens- Westinghouse 501G and the General Electric 9FA. We offer custom silencer designs encompassing the acoustical, aerodynamic and structural design along with materials selection, fabrication drawings, installation inspections and follow-up testing services. At the base load facilities, which are often the sole power supply for small but densely populated islands, noise suppression is frequently a major concern because there are few things louder than the super- charger on a huge industrial diesel engine. Consequently, we have been involved in the acoustical design of numerous diesel halls where containment of noise from the equipment inside requires attention to not only the building itself but also to the cooling air ventilation intakes and discharges, particularly when fans are required. We have built enclosures on dozens of large coal, oil or gas fired power stations in the United States and Overseas. Our typical work scope includes the design of all required noise abatement features, and the testing of the completed unit. These plants are large, complex and contain many more significant noise sources than other types of power plants. Our extensive field experience at these facilities allows us to easily handle even the largest projects.

Our engineers are intimately familiar with operational mechanics of these facilities, with all of the component systems and, most importantly, with the typical noise emissions of every source. This experience enables us to predict what noise controls and in what optimal combination will

Sound Barrier Walls

Outdoor community noise problems may require an engineered Sound Barrier Wall. Our walls offer sound reduction by absorbing the sound at its source and blocking the noise from transmitting to noise sensitive areas. Substations, HVAC Chillers, Power Generators, Cooling Towers, and Compressors are a few outdoor noise candidates for our Noise Barrier Walls.

How Noise Barriers Work

The "nuisance" noise is "diffracted" over barriers increasing the distance it must travel to the listener.

Reflection & Absorption

The effectiveness of a barrier depends on how well it diffracts and absorbs the noise.

A high performance barrier has negligible noise transmission and reflection. This is controlled by two coefficients: Absorption() and Sound Insulation (R).

Quality Noise Barriers

  • significantly reduce the noise levels.
  • guarantee acoustic performance.
  • significantly reduce public complaint levels.
  • provide an aesthetic visual barrier that will last.

Lean Work Cell for Plastic Component Assembly

Dukane has designed a new ergonomically friendly lean work cell for the manual assembly of plastic components. The cell can be designed to accommodate Ultrasonic, Spin, or Heat Staking applications. The main benefits of the cell are compact size, safety, ergonomics and robust construction.

The Lean cell has a small foot print, while still providing significant workspace for the application. The unique compact safety enclosure is only as large as the equipment inside. This leaves more table workspace to be used for staging parts while the equipment cycles. Casters with built in leveling adjustment are provided to allow for quick storage or placement of the Lean work cell to meet changing production requirements.

Safety was the driving factor in the design of this work cell. Features like OSHA approved anti-tie down activation switches and all electronically interlocked panels are standard. The pneumatics include an OSHA lock out device and filter regulator with soft start dump valve that provides an extra level of protection during equipment maintenance and setup. The front automatic pneumatic sliding door is counter balanced to meet low force pinch requirements.

All interactions are within the ergonomic reach zone of a sitting operator. The activation switch position is adjustable along with the placement of the part bins. To help reduce operator fatigue the enclosures can be manufactured with sound deadening material. The user interface is conveniently placed in operator's line of sight. Most importantly, the part load area is designed obstruction free. This area is open on three sides thanks to the unique door design. An operator footrest is also provided.
