Preloaded Rack & Pinion Drive Systems
For axis drive applications requiring high accuracy positioning on CNC machine tools, these systems effectively eliminate the backlash between the rack & pinion by using two pinions – one to drive the axis and one to preload the axis to eliminate the backlash.
Eliminating the system backlash preserves accurate axis positioning during the transition period between acceleration/steady state and deceleration, when the rack & pinion flank contact and load reverses direction. Even high-precision rack & pinions with minimum backlash cannot meet the positioning requirements of ultra-accurate CNC machine tools. For these requirements, a preloaded rack & pinion drive is needed. The DRP+,KRP+ reducers, through mechanical or electrial pre-load, provide a 0-backlash rack and pinion drive. Accurate axis positioning is thus preserved - and is maintained even during the transition period between acceleration/steady state and deceleration, when the rack & pinion flank contact and load reverses direction. Preloaded systems consist of a rack, two pinions, and a reducer/motor drive system. Additional Information

ATLANTA Zero-Backlash Rack & Pinion Drives
ATLANTA Drive Systems, Inc, the World Leader in Rack & Pinion Drive Technologies, offers a wide range of zero-backlash rack & pinion drives that eliminate system backlash by means of a split-pinion and dual-pinion arrangement, providing ultra-precise positioning and repeatability.
ATLANTA Drive Systems, Inc., the World Leader in Rack & Pinion Drive Technologies, offers a wide range of zero-backlash rack & pinion drives that eliminate system backlash by means of a split-pinion and dual-pinion arrangement, providing ultra-precise positioning and repeatability. Positioning accuracy is maintained during acceleration and deceleration, as well as for direction of travel reversals. The backlash is eliminated by using two pinions – one to drive the axis and the other to engage the opposite tooth flank and take up the backlash. Mechanically preloaded split-pinion drives utilize an axial spring to load one pinion half against the other. Electrically preloaded dual-pinion drives utilize two motors, each driving one pinion, which are loaded against each other by means of a special motor controller. These drives are perfect for a wide range of applications, including traveling gantries & columns, milling machines, and material feel axis drives. Industries served include Material Handling, Automation, Aerospace, Machine Tool and Robotics. Typical delivery time for these standard components is only 2 to 3 weeks - ideal for OEM's requiring just-in-time delivery schedules. Special and/or modified designs are always possible.

Zero Backlash Rack and Pinion Drive
The KRP+ planetary reducers are the single drive components in a family of reducers dedicated to rack and pinion and rotary table drive applications. They can be used alone as a single drive or combined with a second unit to create a zero-backlash rack and pinion axis.
As a single drive, the KRP+ features an integral output pinion and planetary gear train that have been optimized for minimum backlash ( 1-3 arc minutes) and maximum stiffness on rack. In line and right angle versions are available. The dual drive kit combines two KRP+ reducers in a patented, mechanically preloaded, zero backlash system. The two units are torsionally preloaded against the rack in this closed loop mechanical system. Only one motor is required to drive the axis. Two reducers can also be combined together in an electrically preloaded twin drive kit. Backlash is eliminated using two motors, one to drive the axis and one to preload the axis. KRP+ reducers come in six sizes with ratios from 5-91:1 allowing linear speeds up to 3100 in./Min.( 78M/min.) and moving masses up to 200,000 Lbs. ( 91,000 Kg.)

Electromate
FREE Motor & Drive Sizing Software
MOTIONEERING® is a Windows®-based, software that:
- Lets the engineer choose an application
- Define a motion profile
- Select the optimum servomotor, amplifier and power supply
- Its database of motor types includes DC servo, brushless servo, direct drive linear, direct drive rotary and vector AC
More >>
Key Features Included in the MOTIONEERING software are: The "project" approach: where multiple axes of motion and their product solutions are combined. This allows power supply and shunt regeneration calculations to be done based on the simultaneous operation of multiple axes. An algorithm that simulates the foldback circuitry of the amplifier. This test assures that a system solution of motor and amplifier can not be made without considering the amplifier time constant. "MOTIONEERING takes the guesswork out of motor sizing. Complex calculations, that take hours by hand, are now handled quickly by the software," says developer Rick Armstrong. It takes a systems approach to sizing by considering the amplifier and power supply ratings in addition to those of the motor. Application mechanisms that can be selected include: leadscrew, rack and pinion, conveyor, nip rolls, spindles and direct drive rotary and linear devices. Motion profiles include simple triangle, trapezoidal and custom built for flexibility in the number and type of segments defined. Product selection includes over 400 systems. Information can be imported and exported and reports can be printed.
