UID Labels
In an attempt to improve asset management through uniquely identifying property, the Department of Defense (DoD) has initiated the unique identification program (UID). The purpose of the UID program is to uniquely identify and value items to provide better asset accountability and valuation through the life cycle.
What is UID? Unique identification (UID) is a system that allows the Department of Defense (DoD) to distinguish one object from another, and to track objects throughout their organization. This system requires that parts have a "unique" identifying mark (data matrix) which is machine readable and permanently affixed as a label or directly marked on the part. The data matrix symbol is a high density 2-D matrix style code. The data contained in the data matrix is formed by combining the manufacturer's or enterprise identification with a part number and/or a serial number which is unique to that one part. The data must be encoded following a specific language and format in order for Automatic Identification Technology (AIT) to read and interpret the data. The unique item identifier (UII) is derived by concatenating the string of specific data elements in the data matrix to identify an individual item distinctly from all other items that the DoD owns. There are two basic methods of constructing the UII for an item.
- Construct #1 - serialization within the enterprise identifier
- Construct #2 - serialization within the original part number, lot number or batch number (within the enterprise identifier)
Which construct you use depends on your company and manufacturing process. The data matrix may be applied to an identification plate securely fastened (using an approved adhesive or mechanical fasteners) to the item or may be applied directly to the surface of the item. The mark shall be as permanent as the normal life expectancy of the item and be capable of withstanding the environmental tests and cleaning procedures specified for the item to which it is affixed. After constructing the data matrix symbol quality checks are required for data content (validation) and data accuracy, code profile and appearance (verification). The data content is validated by de-coding the mark using an automated (barcode) reader. The profile or appearance of the code is inspected with vision verification equipment. The quality standard for acceptance of the machine-readable code must meet the specifics of MIL-STD -130N, ISO15415 and/or AS9132. Wide Area Workflow is the standardized data capture mechanism for transmitting UID data from the contractor into the DoD UID registry for new acquisitions. The UID registry will maintain the records of what the item is, the original owner, initial value, and interact with other systems for property management and logistics. All-Marks will design and provide the basic UID labels mandated for all U.S. Government materiel purchases. These labels contain both plain text and a data matrix barcode that allows government agencies to identify and locate all their assets in a central database. Verification reports can be provided on a CD-ROM or as a printed paper report or both as the situation dictates. Please click on the links to the right for more information or request a quote today!

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that it is releasing an enhanced version of the ProSafeR-RS Safety Instrumented System, ProSafe-RS R2.01.00, on April 10. This new version is smoothly integrated with Yokogawa's latest production control system, CENTUMRVP, and offers improved security and support for Windows Vista. These enhancements strike the optimum balance between improved operational efficiency and safety. Development Background There is a growing emphasis on operational safety in the energy and basic materials industries such as oil, natural gas, petrochemical, and iron & steel that is driven by the need to provide a safe workplace, protect the environment, and be a responsible corporate citizen. To achieve both operational efficiency and safety, the distributed control systems (DCSs) that are necessary for stable plant operations and the safety instrumented systems that are relied on to perform emergency shutdowns need to be finely integrated. To meet these needs, Yokogawa released the ProSafe-RS Safety Instrumented System, and has continued to strengthen its functions to work in conjunction with the CENTUMRseries. Overview of Enhancements 1. Integration with CENTUM VP The operation and monitoring screen of CENTUM VP features an ergonomic universal design and an advanced, intuitive operational environment for improved visibility of information and enhanced operability. Through the integration of ProSafe-RS with CENTUM VP, operation and monitoring can be performed in an advanced operational environment. 2. Improvement of security functions ProSafe-RS R2.01.00 enhances the security of PC components and keeps plants secure by restricting communications, controlling access to folders and the registry, and preventing unauthorized access from outside. 3. First major safety instrumented system to support Windows VistaR ProSafe-RS R2.01.00 is the first major safety instrumentation system to support the latest operating system from Microsoft Corporation, Windows Vista. It runs on the latest OS with the latest software. Major Target Markets and Applications Oil, natural gas, petrochemical and other process industries that use systems for emergency plant shutdown, fire prevention/fighting, and burner management About ProSafe-RS Released in February 2005, the ProSafe-RS Safety Instrumented System helps prevent accidents by detecting unusual conditions in plant operations and taking emergency actions such as shutting down the plant. Unlike conventional safety instrumented systems and DCSs, which are regarded as having different roles/functions and operate separately, the operation of ProSafe-RS and CENTUM series can be fully integrated. Furthermore, an independent certification body has certified that ProSafe-RS conforms to the IEC61508 (Note 1) international safety standard and can be used in SIL3 (Note 2) applications. As a result, ProSafe-RS is held in high regard by users and has been installed in more than 300 projects worldwide since its release. (Note 1) IEC61508 A standard relating to the functional safety of electrical and electronic equipment that was established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). (Note 2) Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and SIL3 SILs have been defined by the IEC. SIL3 means that the risk factor for a plant where safety measures are not in place has been reduced to a range from 1/1000 to 1/10000.

GFS Chemicals, Inc.
Turbidity Testing - meters and standards
GFS manufactures AMCO Clear EPA approved turbidity standards for water testing. In addition, we are distributors for many instrument manufacturers including HF Scientific, Hanna, Rosemount and McVan Instruments.
GFS has moved into the world of submicron polymer technology by acquiring the calibration standards line developed and marketed by APS Analytical Standards, Inc. (Redwood City, CA) over the last twenty years. The value of these standards lies in their potential utility in almost every type of optical or visual calibration process. Key applications involve instruments that operate on the principles of light scattering, transmittance or absorbance, including turbidimeters, nephelometers, colorimeters, spectrophotometers, and clinical analyzers. To date, the largest application is as a calibration standard for turbidity analysis in water treatment plants as required by the 1976 Safe Drinking Water Act. The GFS AMCO Clear® standards have several advantages over formazin-based standards. The mean particle diameter of 0.2 µm and particle size distribution of 0.1- 0.3 µm ensures consistent light scattering characteristics and provides the advantage of a permanent suspension. The new GFS APS standards are significantly more stable and, unlike formazin-based standards, can be used for consistent calibration check of less than one NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit). This is important because the EPA requires turbidity values not to exceed 0.3 NTU for surface source drinking water. GFS maintains the strictest standards of ISO-9000 conformance. Generated in an ultra-pure aqueous medium, these permanent suspensions provide the analyst with several significant benefits: • Long-term stability • Ease of use, storage • Non-toxic character • Accuracy to +/- 1% of stated value from lot-to-lot • Uniformity of particle size, shape and distribution from lot-to-lot GFS now provides the most comprehensive line of standards, analytical reagents and instrumentation for water treatment facilities worldwide. By bringing together the 20 years of turbidity experience from APS Analytical Standards with over 75 years of GFS chemical manufacturing experience, customers can rely on GFS for the highest quality, freshest, most stable and reliable products on the market. As an ISO-9000 certified organization, GFS can give you the assurance of consistent product every time. AMCO Clear® standards are certified for use in turbidimeters and haze meters by the following regulatory bodies: • EPA Federal Registry, Vol. 47, #42, March 3, 1982 to present • Standard Methods of Water & Wastewater, APHA-AWWAWPOCF, 16th-20th Edition to present • ASTM, D1889-00, D6698-01, D6855-03 • ASBC - American Society of Brewing Chemists 1986 to present • Analytica - EBC, 4th Edition, 1987 to present AMCO Clear® / AMCO AEPA® is an EPA-approved turbidity primary standard that is safe, non-toxic and disposable. It is easy-to-use with no dilution or prep work required, and is available in a wide range of values. It is NIST Traceable, and its inherent stability means it does not settle out of suspension. It has a guaranteed one year shelf life. The convenient submicron polymer suspensions are the most reliable and reproducible primary calibration standards currently approved by the EPA for water testing, and preferred by instrument manufacturers and the U.S.G.S. for their intrinsic uniform optical properties. APS Analytical Standards are Certified Reference Standards (CRS) for use as primary standards for the calibration of: Turbidimeters – measuring turbidity (NTU units) Haze meters (ISO) – measuring haze (EBC units) Haze meters (ASBC) – measuring haze (FTU units) Suspended Solids Analyzer – measuring total suspended solids (PPM) Biomedical Instrumentation – measuring bacterial colony counts/protein/blood composition Visual Process Monitoring – visually measuring fermentation/ distillation Spectrophotometers – measuring percent absorbed and transmitted light or optical density The GFS AMCO Clear® standards program will continue to develop new products for the turbidity, spectrophotometric, consumer products,life-science, and materials science markets. Please contact us regarding opportunities that we might develop together for your benefit.
