8B Linearized RTD & Potentiometer Input SCMs

As part of its continually expanding family of SensorLex® 8B isolated analog signal conditioners, Dataforth Corporation of Tucson, AZ, offers the 8B34 linearized 2- or 3-wire RTD input modules, the 8B35 linearized 4-wire RTD input modules, and the 8B36 potentiometer input modules.

Each 8B34 input module isolates, filters, amplifies and linearizes a single channel of temperature input from an RTD and provides a high-level analog voltage output. These modules interface to 100 ohm platinum RTDs and can be used in any process, industrial or other, that requires precise measurement of temperature.

The 8B35 modules are also used to measure temperature, but are designed for applications requiring ultimate precision. The 8B35 uses a 4-wire measurement technique that almost completely eliminates measurement errors due to leadwire resistance. These modules are used when leadwires are extremely long or different gage wires. Like the 8B34, the 8B35 interfaces to 100 ohm platinum RTDs.

The 8B36 interfaces to potentiometers and slidewires using a 2- or 3-wire connection. Sensors with this format include tension transducers, level indicators, rotary or linear position transducers, accelerometers, and pressure transducers. The 8B36 module interfaces to potentiometers up to 10,000 ohms and provides ±0.05% measurement accuracy and ±0.02% linearity.

Download the 8B34 datasheet, the 8B35 datasheet, and the 8B36 datasheet.

Excitation for the RTD in the 8B34 modules and for the potentiometer in the 8B36 is provided from the module using two matched current sources. With a 3-wire connection, this method allows equal currents to flow through the sensor leads, canceling the effects of lead resistances. In the 8B35, RTD excitation is provided from the module using a single precision current source. Excitation currents are small in all of the modules, thereby minimizing self-heating of the sensor - a potential source of measurement error.

Other features of the 8B34, 8B35, and 8B36 include:

  • High-Level Voltage Outputs
  • 1500Vrms Transformer Isolation & 240Vrms Field-Side Protection
  • 3-Pole Low-Pass Filtering
  • Low Output Noise
  • Low Drift with Ambient Temperature
  • -40°C to +85°C Operating Temperature Range
  • CE Compliant
  • Other Agency Approvals Pending
  • Mix and Match Module Types on Backpanel

Since its introduction, the SensorLex® 8B family has grown to include 17 family groups with a total of 102 different modules. Measuring only 1.11" x 1.65" x 0.4" (28.1mm x 41.9mm x 10.2mm), the 8B signal conditioner is ideal for embedded or portable applications.

Housed in a solid, potted thermoplastic plug-in-the-panel package with a flammability rating of UL-94 V-0, the 8B family is specifically designed to protect user equipment, while reducing electrical noise and enabling convenient system expansion and repair. All 8B modules offer dimensional stability over temperature, chemical resistance, and excellent stability over time; they do not require recalibration. All models meet the requirements of EN61000-6-4 (radiated/conducted emissions) and EN61000-6-2 (ESD/RF/EFT immunity).

Humidity & Temperature Conditioner (400-700 CFM)

PGC's 400-700 CFM system is a durable, high quality piece of humidity/temperature conditioning equipment for scientists and engineers whose research, testing, or quality control applications require environmental simulation and control within extremely narrow tolerances.

PGC conditioners are two-temperature generators. Within the unit, a water spray temperature and a leaving air temperature are precisely controlled. A portion of the air always passes through a water spray where it is cooled to the temperature of the water and saturated. The air is then reheated to the desired dry-bulb temperature and returned to the conditioned area. The temperature of the water spray will approach the dew point of the process air. By controlling dew point temperature and dry-bulb temperature, a very constant relative humidity is maintained.

If the area to be conditioned has changing internal loads or requires make-up air, the Cascade System should be selected. This system adds a humidity sensor to the control loop that will reset the water spray temperature to compensate for load changes.

Air Flow

Air returning from the conditioned space passes through a return duct and, depending on the position of the face and by-pass damper, a portion is directed through a water spray and the balance by-passes the spray. The portion of the air subjected to the sprayed coil is cooled to within approximately 1.0ºC of the spray water temperature. This essentially saturated air passes through a mist eliminator and mixes with air that by-passed the sprayed coil. The mixed air is forced across an electric air heater by a fan. The conditioned air is then supplied, via ductwork, to the work or test area.

Air Control

A proportioning control system compares the dry-bulb temperature, measured by an RTD, to the air temperature set point. A pulsed output, which is ordinarily "on" 50% of the time when stabilized, is supplied to the air heater control circuit. A second analog output positions the by-pass damper so that the amount of air by-passed is directly proportional to the percentage of air heat applied. If the air temperature drops below the selected set point, the controller calls for more heat; i.e., the "on" time of the heater increases. The face and by-pass damper begins to compensate so that more returning air by-passes the spray coil, returning the pulsed output to the normal 50% "on" condition. Conversely, if the air temperature increases above the set point, the heater is pulsed less and more air is directed through the spray chamber.

RH Control

A platinum RTD in the water line is measured by a proportioning controller, the output of which adjusts a refrigeration capacity control valve and a water heater. Water spray temperature is controlled within ±0.1ºC.

Cascade System

The desired relative humidity is set to within ±0.1%. The proportioning controller receives an input signal from a relative humidity sensor/transmitter and, if necessary, adjust the water temperature. The output of the RH control loop is the water temperature set point. If the relative humidity drops by as little as 0.2%, the output of the RH controller will increase the water temperature set point by approximately 0.1ºC. This will, in turn, increase the relative humidity to the selected set point, returning the controller output to steady-state level.
