MAP Sensor Optimizes Fuel/Air Mixture Ratios

Kavlico, a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) is introducing its single-chip MEMS capacitive sensing technology for MAP sensing. This new MAP sensor design is available in pressure ranges up to 3 Bar and has a light-weight plastic composite housing. Operating on 5 Vdc, the sensor provides a 0.5 to 4.5 Vdc analog output proportional to pressure standard with other custom outputs available.

Typically used in fuel injected engine management systems, MAP sensors provide instantaneous manifold pressure information to the engine's electronic control unit (ECU). Air density is then calculated to determine the engine's air mass flow rate which is then used to determine the optimum fuel flow to be delivered. By accurately metering the fuel flow, the vehicle runs more efficiently and economically, an imperative with today's rising fuel cost.

Kavlico's MAP sensors are high accuracy devices and have been fully temperature compensated across the entire operating range. Capable of withstanding high vibration environments, these sensors have excellent EMC performance. Small in size, the sensors can be specified with an integral temperature sensing option for increased functionality.

For high volume, OEM applications, Kavlico's MAP sensors may be customized to suit each end-user's application specific design criteria such as with a twist lock or fastener mount configuration.

Kistler is now offering the Type 6056A pressure sensor for use in glow plug adapters. This new highly precise M5 size sensor with its tried-and-tested measuring element has a miniaturized plug connection to permit installation deep inside the glow plug adapter. Thanks to this innovation, many different glow plug adapters can be fitted with a single type of standard-length pressure sensor.

This simplification facilitates the preparation of indicator measurements, reduces the need to keep stocks of sensors in various lengths and shortens delivery times.

The use of glow plug adapters permits cylinder pressure measurements to be taken without need for a separate measuring bore. The adapter is screwed into the existing bore of the original glow plug. Thus, glow plug adapters use the existing bore, allow a sensor to be mounted simply without need for an additional indicator bore and permit pressure measurements to be taken close to the combustion.

Kistler designs glow plug adapters to suit the intended purpose, the geometry of the original glow plug and the cylinder head space available.

Cylinder Pressure Sensors for Large Engines

Large Engine Monitoring Sensors Have Long Life

Reliable monitoring of cylinder pressure is not a challenge on large stationary gas engines with monitor senor type 6613C from Kistler Instrument. A life expectancy of at least 16,000 hours is designed in due to rugged construction features such as a knock resistant and corrosive resistant diaphragm. An anti strain internal design negates sensitivities to mounting stress and most particulate contamination. In pipeline pressurization service, a three year life is typical.

Employing a piezoelectric quartz measuring element, thermal shock and instability are nearly eliminated. The inherent stiffness of quartz extends the upper frequency response of the sensor to capture all relevant data. An inline charge amplifier has two measuring ranges and selectable time constants that permit normal operating data stability, despite varying loads and speeds, as well as a calibration mode. Measuring ranges are to 100 bar and 250 bar. The output Voltage of 0 to 5 is easily read by ordinary data acquisition equipment.

Kistler is a worldwide supplier of precision instrumentation for the measurement of pressure, force and acceleration serving the R&D, Industrial and OEM communities.

Cavity Pressure Sensing

Improving and optimizing the molding of polymers with long cycle times is more production friendly with the type 4079A… series of pressure sensor measurement systems from Kistler Instrument.

Cavity Pressure Sensing

The pressure sensor system consists of a piezoresistive pressure sensor and digital charge amplifier designed for easy integration into injection molding machines. A matched system enables highly precise measurement of the pressure curve's different phases where each portion is critical for exact shape reproduction. Cavity pressure measurement can keep process variations within narrow tolerances at each stage. Different molding approaches can be researched for analysis and cycle times can be studied.

For applications to 180 °C, versions are available for 5, 10, 20 and 50 bar pressure ranges. The pressure sensor is free of harmful media and allows acquisition of the reaction temperature. The diaphragm is designed for static long term measurement extending use to a wide variety of reactive polymers.

Used with DataflowTM software, the optimized pre-production parameters may be recorded and witnessed for a certified production run.

Kistler is a worldwide supplier of precision instrumentation for the measurement of pressure, force and acceleration serving the R&D, Industrial and OEM Communities.
