Industrial Fuses, Fuse Holders, Fuse Blocks -

AutomationDirect is pleased to carry the most popular Class CC, Class J, Class RK and Class M general purpose fuses for industrial control applications.

The Class CC current limiting fuses, frequently used in applications for small motor branch circuit protection, are available in both time-delay and fast-acting models. Because of their superior current limiting performance, these Class CC products are sometimes regarded as an upgrade to the Class M general purpose fuses. In addition, the CC line is recognized for NEC branch circuit protection and Type 2 coordinated applications for IEC or NEMA starters/contactors.

Where adherence to extensive current limiting codes is not required, the Class M general purpose midget fuses and small dimension fuses are a great low-cost solution for both time-delay and fast-acting protection.

Class J ... JDL Series - Time-delay fuse with space-saving dimensions and high performance. Recommended for Type 2 (no damage) protection of IEC style motor starters and contactors.

Packages of Class J Current Limiting Fuses start at $78. (JDL1 - per package of 10).

Class RK - ECNR/ECSR Series

Time-delay, dual element construction with superior overload and cycling capabilities. Recommended for AC power distribution system mains, feeders and branch circuits. RK5 current limiting.

LENRK/LESRK Series - Time-delay fuses having up to 40% more current limiting than ECNR/ECSR series. RK1 current limiting.

Packages of Class RK Current Limiting Fuses start at $21.25 (ECNR15 - per package of 10).

We have not forgotten the accessories you need: several fuse holder and fuse blocks are available in a variety of 1, 2, and 3 pole form factors.

----------------------------------------------------------- 10 Great Reasons to Use a Fuse

Why use a fuse? Fuses offer a safe and economical solution for overcurrent protection of both conductors and components. Fuses can help make your control systems meet the newest UL and NEC codes.

1. Safety - Overcurrent protective devices that have tripped are often reset without first investigating the cause of the fault. Electromechanical devices may not have the reserve capacity to open safely when a second or third fault occurs. When a fuse opens it is replaced with a new fuse, so the protection level is not degraded by previous faults.

2. Cost effective - Fuses typically are the most cost effective means of providing overcurrent protection. This is especially true where high fault currents exist or where small components such as Control Transformers (CPTs) or DC power supplies need protection.

3. Reliability - Fuses have no moving parts to wear out or become contaminated by dust or oil.

4. North American standards - Tri-National Standards specify fuse performance and maximum allowable fuse let-thru values.

5. High interrupting rating - With most low voltage current limiting fuses (less than or equal to 600 volts) having a 200,000 A interrupting rating, you are not paying a high premium for a high interrupting capacity.

6. Component protection - The high current limiting action of a fuse minimize or eliminates component damage.

7. Extended protection - Devices with low interrupting ratings are often rendered obsolete by service upgrades or increases in available fault current. New NEC and UL standards are causing the need for potentially expensive system upgrades to non-fused systems.

8. Selectivity - Fuses can be easily coordinated to provide selectivity under both overload and short circuit conditions.

9. Minimal maintenance - Fuses do not require periodic recalibration as do some electromechanical overcurrent protective devices.

10. Long life - As a fuse ages, the speed of response will not slow down or change. A fuse's ability to provide protection will not be adversely affected by the passing of time.

...AND THE BEST REASON OF ALL - OUR PRICE!

AutomationDirect has secured incredible pricing for all our fuses, fuse holders and fuse blocks, and has passed those savings on to you. Many items are priced well below industry list prices, making fuse protection a beneficial and affordable option for almost every electrical device.

Vishay/Beyschlag MFU Series Chip Fuses at Digi-Key

From Digi-Key, The new SMD chip fuse series MFU from Vishay is an over current protection device that avoids the risks of fire hazards caused by overload situations or short circuits on electronic devices, as well as enabling the engineering of low power electronics to design very small power circuits.

With a standard SMD size range of 0402, 0603, 0805, and 1206 and a rated current range of 0.5 A up to 6.3 A, the MFU series increases the safety level of electronic devices like cell phones, TFT-flat screens, notebooks, game consoles, DC/DC-inverters, control units, and motion control units. For circuits with higher requirements regarding miniaturization like cell phones or portable media players, the MFU 0402 offers the same electrical performance as the MFU 0603.

The homogeneous crystal structure of the metal layer has an important influence over the long-term stability, due to aging factors such as power dissipation or external high temperatures in combination with thermal cycles. To simultaneously improve control over the dimensions and crystal structure of the fuse element, Vishay Beyschlag MFU-series chip fuses are created using a thin film sputtering process. This process leverages precision chip resistor manufacturing knowledge and assembly capacity.

In addition, a special protective coating now raises the capability of MFU chip fuses to withstand harsh thermal shocks and wide-ranging humidity requirements.

Features:

  • UL-Recognition E253806
  • VDE-Approbation (MFU 0603, MFU 1206)
  • Advanced Thin-Film Technology
  • Very quick acting fusing characteristics (FF)
  • Outstanding stability of fusing characteristics
  • Standard SMD Chip Sizes: 0402 up to 1206
  • Rated current range: 0.5 A up to 6.3 A
  • Green product

Applications:

  • Information technology
  • Industrial electronics
  • Automotive electronics
  • Telecommunication
  • Medical equipment
  • Audio/video electronics

Characteristics of SMD Thin Film Chip Fuses

The tight controlled thin film manufacturing process (sputtering) guarantees an outstanding stability of fusing characteristics together with small deviation of the pre-arcing times.

The chip fuses are lead (Pb)-free (category e3), the pure tin plating provides compatibility with lead (Pb)-free and lead-containing soldering processes. The immunity of the plating against tin whisker growth has been proven under extensive testing.

The MFU chip fuse series is the first chip fuse which covers the safety requirements out of the UL 248-14 and IEC 60127-4. The MFU chip fuse types MFU 0603 and MFU 1206 satisfy both the UL-Recognition and the VDE-Approbation according to IEC 60127-4. Complying too both safety standards will offer the opportunity to develop only one electronic design for the global market instead of two designs. The MFU series is suitable in applications for the American market (UL) as well as for applications designed for the rest of the world (IEC). And also in terms of costs of ownership both approvals of the MFU series reduce the costs of procurement, logistic, production and spare part supply.

Type RJS Fuses

RJS Fuses are primarily intended for use in telecommunication circuit applications requiring low current protection with high surge tolerance. They are typically used to replace heat coil type devices. They are designed to be placed between the line input and the surge arresting components (mov. gas tube, zenor diode, air gaps, etc.)

These fuses will withstand transient surge currents generated by lightning in accordance with the attached table.

RJS fuses guard protected circuitry against sustained overload or short circuit conditions. Such sustained overloads may be generated by accidental contact between utility cables and phone lines (power line cross). RJS Fuse are used in circuits to obtain compliance with the test requirements specified in UL 1459/1950 and Bellcore GR 1089.

Fusing Optical Fiber Improves Efficiency

Fiberoptics Technology Inc. (FTI) announces the development of a proprietary process to fuse optical, leaded glass fibers at the input, eliminating epoxy to improve high temperature and transmission performance.

The process will be used to manufacture high end medical light guides and industrial components. Current testing confirms the process to be effective for Lightguides requiring .150" - .250" active areas (3.8mm to 6.3mm). Testing is currently under way to prove the process effective for light guides up to .5" (13mm).

"The beauty of this process, at least for the smaller diameters, is total cycle time, which is very short. The resulting input is very uniform with extremely high percentage of usable transmission surface. The ferrule sheathe is not deformed, and the percentage of transmission gain may be as high as 13% (when compared to the input diameter of a non-fused fiber bundle), while continuous temperature resistance climbs to 1100 degrees Fahrenheit", said Paul Dobson, the company's R&D director.

The process overcomes some of the traditional limitations related to using fiber optics. The gain in efficiency comes from the elimination of interstitial spacing, which is replaced with fibers.

Previous to this announcement, the company used alternative process strategies which were effective to 900 degrees Fahrenheit, but transmission efficiency was reduced, lowering optimal throughput by about 20 percent. This new approach eliminates the throughput limitation entirely.

The company will continue to offer both terminating processes, as the fused process is more involved, so costs are higher. FTI hopes to have a complete capability range, up to 19mm, by the end of the 2007.
