Organics Characterization by FTIR

  • Qualitative analysis
  • Verification of a suspected material
  • Identification of an unknown material

Non-Ferrous Alloys

  • Elements by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP)

Thermal chemistry analyses are used to determine melting points, coefficients of thermal expansion, glass transitions, solidus-liquidus and specific heat of various materials. Specific methods offered by The M&P Lab are differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and high temperature differential thermal analysis (HTDTA).

With moving parts and rotating equipment constantly in need of lubricants, testing of these lubricants to assure these parts keep operating at top efficiency is critical. The M&P Lab has capability to evaluate dry lubricants, greases, oils and fuels. Among the analyses are ash content, distillation curve, flash point, pour point, specific gravity, sulfur content, viscosity, water separability, and trace metal analysis, among others. In addition, cone penetration and dropping point analyses are available for greases.

Electron Microscopy

The M&P Lab is equipped with a sophisticated state-of-the-art scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an electron microprobe. The SEM is capable of operating in conventional high vacuum or variable pressure vacuum, which permits examination of non-metallic and non-conductive materials without coating or sample preparation. Maximum sample dimension is greater than 250 mm (10 inches) with maximum mass of 4.5 kg (10 pounds). The SEM is equipped with light element EDS (energy-dispersive spectrometry) to obtain qualitative information about the chemical characteristics of a sample and WDS (wavelength dispersive spectrometry) to obtain positive identification of trace or overlapping elemental X-ray lines and precise quantitative analysis.

Quick Links:

The electron microprobe is a scanning electron microscope (SEM) that has been optimized for flexibility and accuracy in elemental analysis and is equipped with two fixed and four scanning WDS as well as high throughput EDS for qualitative and quantitative standard-based chemical analysis. The high probe current enables rapid collection of excellent X-ray maps. Seven wavelength spectrometers determine a material's elemental composition on a microscopic scale. The M&P Lab has been providing electron microprobe analysis for nearly 40 years, and our latest microprobe was recently upgraded with state of the art hardware and software.

A few of the notable features of our system are listed below:

  • One of the world's fastest electron microprobes with seven wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometers (WDS) and a silicon drift detector energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SDD-EDS).
  • Ultra-fast color X-ray element mapping wth Bruker Quantax software capable of incorporating signals from both EDS and WDS detectors.
  • The highest take-off angle of any commercial electron microprobe for the greatest accuracy and sensitivity.
  • Able to determine nearly the entire periodic table of elements, from boron to uranium on a microscopic scale.
  • CamScan CS3000 digital imaging for high quality SEM images.
  • Full-service contract always maintained for superior up-time.

Our microprobe analysis has been used to support research, development, manufacturing, maintenance, and repair in the following areas: power generation, automotive, aircraft, nuclear, electrical, medical devices, coatings, welds, brazes, minerals and the identification of unknown materials.

Some typical case studies and classic examples, many of which are analysis of a foreign material found in processes, are:

  • We matched the alloy of metal flakes found in Styrofoam cups to the alloy of air ducts so the client added filters to the air system to fix the problem.
  • We matched the alloy of foreign material that damaged a power plant to a tool left behind by a service person.
  • A plastic pellet manufacturer had metal bits in some of his plastic and we identified the types of steel for him on pieces as small as 20 thousandths of an inch across. This allowed him to determine which part of his machinery was shedding fragments.

Parts as large as 2x2x2 inches will fit in the sample holder, but very large parts have been characterized by sectioning or simply scratching a few tiny grains from an inconspicuous area. If you can be seen under a 200X microscope, we can identify it.

Another example is surface coating failure on the automotive fuel injectors. Identifying and characterizing the various phases in braze metal have been very helpful to some clients. Iron diffusion quantification in a weld was very helpful to another client who manufactures metal powders. We do alot of elemental analysis across the cross-sections of metal coatings. Anything that is a solid metal or mineral and will not evaporate quickly in a vacuum can be analyzed by the microprobe.

Airbrasive© Micro Abrasive Blasting Technology

Airbrasive Micro Blasting Machining is an effective way to cut, abrade, deburr, deflash, etch, drill and restore a variety of materials. Airbrasive Jet Machining are pneumatic devices powered by forced air. Applications are made possible as the forced air joins with a very fine powder in the attached pressure chamber and a powerful abrasive mixture is produced. The abrasive mixture is then sent through the hand piece and nozzle creating a precise abrasive stream.

About S. S. White Technologies:

S. S. White Technologies has been innovating Airbrasive® Micro Abrasive Blasting Machines since 1948. With its roots in S. S. White's century old dental drilling business, Airbrasive® jet machinery has a long history of technological innovation behind it. In 1844, Dr. Samuel Stockton White invented the first, high-speed dental drill.

While S. S. White remained the leader in the dental market for over a century, by the 1950's competition had grown substantially. As a result, new technology was being brought to market much more rapidly. It was in this climate of innovation that S. S. White produced the Airbrasive® jet machine.

Initially marketed to dentists as a dental drill, S. S. White quickly realized that its product could be useful not only to the dental market but to various other industries, trades and crafts as well. Once again the entrepreneurial spirit that had for over a century led S. S. White to success, enabled the company to anticipate the needs of its customers and satisfy the needs of craftsmen in various industries with its "tool of all trades".

Micro Abrasive Blasting Units - Model K

Micro Abrasive Blasting Units are very easy to use. The handpiece and nozzle have been designed to give the user flexibility and control. As a result, the Airbrasive® machine can be used to create precise cuts or intricate patterns on various metals, glass or plastic, whether on the surface of the object or in the hard to reach places that other tools are not flexible enough to reach.

Airbrasive's Model K is one of the most popular in the product line. It is ideal for lab use or pilot production research. It holds the same amount of powder as our 6500 but incorporates an air patented electro-magnetic vibratory feed system for powder delivery. It incorporates separate controls for pressure adjustment and powder flow. This insures precise powder flow when needed.

Some of the key features of this unit are its accessibility, autobleed, clear and concise front panel design and its portability and compactness. This model was designed for accessibility to the internal wear components. No longer are flexible arms required to get inside the cabinet. There is a convenient autobleed feature that automatically depressurizes the unit once it is shut down. The unit must be depressurized before powder can be refilled. For every knob that is adjusted on the front panel, there is an indicator gauge that provides feedback. If you need a more aggressive powder flow than a 6500 but like its portability feature, then the Model K is the logical choice.
