What is claimed to be the world's largest wind-solar hybrid installations now sits on the rooftop of a law firm in Kingston, Jamaica. The scheme comprises 50 SolarMill units, each featuring Vertical Axis Wind Turbines, solar panels, and "smart" electronics, from Indiana-based WindStream Technologies. The 80 kW system — 25 kW of wind and 55 kW of solar — is expected to yield energy cost savings of $2 million USD over a 25-year service life. PV Magazine notes the power produced can be inverted for grid applications or used off-grid with a storage system.

CSP World takes note of an alternative heat transfer fluid based on dense gas-particle suspensions for concentrating solar power (CSP) under development by the European CSP2 project. A prototype solar receiver with a 100-150 kW thermal pilot loop is being designed to produce particle suspensions in the 500-750° C range at 70% efficiency.

A new fuel cell system developed by General Electric researchers motivated the company to launch a startup and build a manufacturing facility near Saratoga Springs, NY. The solid oxide fuel cell produces 1-10 MW of power at a generation efficiency of 65%. The device uses zinc electrodes and zinc chloride instead of the more commonly employed sodium chloride solution to harness energy available from salt concentration differences. This video shows how researchers used a commodity common in Minnesota to examine airflow patterns at a 130 m turbine under real world conditions. Visualization was effected by a large searchlight and heavy snowfall during a blizzard.

A trip to the beach inspired a University of California (Riverside) researcher to test sand as a lithium-ion battery anode material. Processed into a porous, pure nanosilicon, the resulting anode demonstrated an energy density 3x that of traditional graphite-based anodes. The discovery could translate into longer-lasting, cheaper batteries for electric vehicles and personal electronics.
