The New Age of Electronic Motors

The New Age of Electronic Motors One New Zealand manufacturer uses what it calls advanced fabrication techniques for electric motors. The process involves moving electronics from printed circuit boards to custom silicon devices, extensive use of polymers and ceramics, and avoiding stamped laminations. The manufacturer says it brings revolutionary technology (as in assembling cell phones) to the industry. They claim the motors will be physically smaller, robust, and highly efficient and will surpass currently available motors. The company says its existing motors consume 80% less energy, and use 30% less copper and 80% less steel than conventional designs. Applications will focus on refrigeration, ventilation equipment, and vending machines.

Taking the Touch Out of Touchscreen

Taking the Touch Out of Touchscreen Touchscreens are a wonderful piece of technology, but tapping and tracing leaves lots of fingerprints. Especially if you eat while you work! Scientists are testing a reflection — and smudge-resistant coating — a derivative of Teflon. The coating includes other compounds, such as aluminum and silica, that also help to reduce glare (see video).

One Notebook, Four Screens (Video)

One Notebook, Four Screens (Video) Two-screen laptops are apparently passé — even your phone comes with that many screens, these days. So Intel showed off a four-screen concept notebook: in addition to the large screen where we expect to see one, three small OLED screens sit above the keyboard. Watch how the four screens work together.

Design for Labeling

Design for Labeling You love that old lawnmower. But the label with all the operating instructions is peeling off and unreadable. While not necessarily a functional problem, manufacturers don't like the unsightliness of worn labels. One company did some research to discover what caused bubbling and wear, such as whether plastic outgassing or air entrapment upon application contributed to the problem.

Designing for the Luxury Market

Designing for the Luxury Market When the economy goes south, what happens to the luxury market for appliances? Well, in the U.S. luxury marketplace over the last year most product categories suffered from decreased spending. However, there were several significant areas that the well-to-do ($100,000 and higher in income) weren't willing to give up. GPS devices saw the highest rate of spending change, rising nearly 75% over the previous year. But apparently the affluent are also staying home more as well. The sale of TVs increased 35%, and even spending on lawn mowers was up more than 28%.

Finishing the Trim

Finishing the Trim Appliance and electronics design trends change. Customers want bold colors and metallic accents. You need to eliminate secondary processes and compliance requirements associated with painting or plating. Pre-colored polymers aren't new, but now they can be molded into production-ready parts. Weld lines are moved to areas that customers don't see.

World's Fastest Appliance Motor

World's Fastest Appliance Motor What can you do with a motor that spins at 104,000 rpm? Barely 2 in. in diameter (56 mm), the 200W brushless DC motor took 10 years to develop. The motor will initially be used in a handheld battery-operated vacuum cleaner. It's twice as efficient as the brushed motors used previously.
