Utility Banks on North America's Biggest Battery
 
Over the next two years, Southern California Edison engineers will monitor the performance of thousands of lithium-ion batteries and their contributions to improved grid performance. The newly opened 32 MWh Tehachapi Energy Storage Project profiled in Greentech Media sits in an area projected to generate up to 4.5 GW of wind energy by 2016. The battery system, supplied by LG Chem, includes 604 battery racks, 10,872 battery modules, and 608,832 individual battery cells — the same as installed in General Motors' Chevrolet Volt battery packs. Grid stabilization, voltage support, and other utility uses for storage will be investigated at North America's largest battery energy storage installation.

Europe's largest commercial battery power plant went online in Germany last month and provides the same level of frequency control as a 50 MW conventional turbine. The 5 MWh facility houses 25,600 lithium-ion cells which react to grid stabilization demands in milliseconds. The project reflects a growing trend in grid-connected energy storage solutions, which IHS Engineering360 predicts will reach 40 GW by 2022.

Rice University, TX, researchers report the discovery of a fuel cell catalyst that is a cheaper and better performer than platinum. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) combined with graphene oxide, nitrogen, and boron form a material with 70% greater current density than Pt catalysts. The new combination also promotes oxygen reduction by increasing the number of catalytically active sites. The source of these GQDs? Anthracite coal.

Biomaterials are combined with lithium extracted from spent batteries by researchers from Uppsala University, Sweden. California-based Imergy Power Systems developed solutions to these cost and performance issues: low-grade vanadium recycled from oil well and mining wastes is used.
