Museum Expansion Expresses Green Commitment

The Williamstown, MA, Clark Art Institute is home to one of most impressive French impressionism collections in the world. It's now also attracting attention for its new multi-million dollar, multi-phase expansion which is said to make the facility more modern, but also environmentally responsible. While two brand new buildings have been added to the 140 acre site, more than 1,000 trees have been planted; a giant reflecting pool adds to the overall serenity of the rural campus. Geothermal walls, new footpaths, and wetland protection measures also propel the project's overall commitment to sustainable construction methods.

Chicago to House Chinese Tower

A group of Chinese developers have selected Chicago to house a brand new skyscraper that, when completed, will be the windy city's third tallest tower. Construction of the proposed 350 m tall glass, steel, and concrete structure is to begin later this year with a targeted 2018 opening. The triple-tiered, angular, 89-story mixed-use facility will feature a luxury hotel, as well as high-end apartments, shops, and office space.

Photoshop Produces Provocative Architecture

The digital age has spawned some wild architectural designs that seem to trade in function for an aesthetic that is often wavy, balloon-like, or simply confusing. Having utilized Photoshop tech in their design of The Glass Farm in Schijndel, the Netherlands, this new glass and steel mini-mall is indeed a product of this same digital age. However, instead of creating an abstract architectural statement, architects attempted to blend 140 photographed rural buildings and landscapes to create one design that was then printed on a single series of exterior glass panels. The result is a pleasant mirage that is both comfortably familiar yet high tech.

Deep Dig, Tight Space

Compact excavators are ideal for moving the earth inside tight construction job-sites. A new line of compact hydraulic excavators ranging in sizes from 2,000 to 34,000 lbs are said to offer contractors more versatility and dig depth due to the machine's unique long-arm dig-depth configuration. The tracked excavator's planetary drive feature causes the motor to automatically issue more torque when operating in and around rough and steeply angled terrain. Demo video shows this digger in action.

Explosives Erase Steel Bridge

Sometimes the best equipment in a demolition contractor's arsenal is the kind that goes boom. Literally. Recently, a team of demolition contractors employed by the Ohio Department of Transportation put their explosive tools and skills to work in a synchronized explosion that destroyed a half-century old concrete and steel bridge that stood 128 ft high and 116 ft wide, and a mile long in less than three seconds.

Panels Create Passive Thermal Protection

Heating educational buildings is expensive, which is why architects working on several multi-million pound school projects in Worcester, England have chosen to work with a newly engineered interior wall and ceiling material that is said to help attain significant passive thermal protection. Thanks to their state-of-the-art phase-change material composition, the lightweight suspended ceiling tiles and wall/ceiling panels are able to retain heated air, which means HVAC systems don't have to work so hard.

Wood Bathtubs Make a Splash in London

Bathtubs come in a variety of waterproof materials, including ceramic and steel, but never will you find one made of wood. Until now, that is. A Switzerland design firm recently provided a new wood bathtub concept for One Tower Bridge, a London high end apartment building, that is quickly catching on with consumers seeking not only the warmth of real wood, but also a one-of-a-kind addition to their bathroom. Constructed from both the nut tree and smoked oak, these tubs undergo a waterproofing process by which a series of veneers are pressed together and soaked in a special resin.

6,000 Solar Panels Power Stadium

The methods by which we harness the sun for its energy have gone through many transitions and transformations over the decades, not the least of which was to provide clean energy for satellites in the 1950s. Today, photovoltaic solar panel tech has reached the point where it can be utilized to power massive commercial structures such as Brazil's Mineirão Stadium, which recently hosted the 2014 World Cup. Outfitted with 6,000 solar panels, the stadium is said to be the first ever to be entirely powered by the sun.
