A Tower in Motion

A Tower in Motion In the future, residents of this skyscraper will park their cars inside their apartments. Also, they will enjoy a different view of the skyline anytime they wish. That future is happening now along the Persian Gulf Coast. During a July news conference, it was announced that construction of the 80-story "building in motion" is set to begin this summer in Dubai. Taller than Manhattan's Empire State Building, the $700 million shape-changing skyscraper will feature entire floors constructed on mechanical gears and apartments that "spin… using a voice-activated computer." Fantasy? A second tower-in-motion is being designed for Moscow.

Enhancing Concrete

Enhancing Concrete Yesterday's builders asked for concrete; today's builders want high-performance concrete. Specifying exactly what kind of HPC, however, depends on a wide range of variables. Here, Concrete Products summarizes some of the guidelines to determine, for example, whether your job requires concrete-enhancing fly ash, silica fume, or even ground granulated blast furnace slag.

Bending Steel

Bending Steel Rarely do we think of heavy-duty structural steel as a bendable construction product. But a team of architects and engineers have done just that to create the 120 ft tall Ave Maria Oratory in Naples, FL. The curved project presented the building and design team with some challenges unique to steel construction. Modern Steel Construction reports...

New Pavers that Pay Off

New Pavers that Pay Off When it comes to paving the world's highways and bridges, there's only one thing engineers and heavy construction contractors have in mind: performance. With the rapid increase in energy costs and tighter bottom lines, high efficiency and reduced maintenance downtime have never been more paramount. From pavers with onboard diagnostic capabilities in four languages, to machines that eliminate operator fatigue, these are the newest high-performance pavers available for today's roads and bridges.

Say Goodbye to Blistered Palms

Say Goodbye to Blistered Palms It's no longer necessary to drive heavy screws by pure muscle power alone. The introduction of impact drivers onto the modern commercial construction scene in the 1990s has made a profound …well… impact with construction pros who expect speedy but accurate jobsite production. How do they work? Impact drivers operate like a fast drill until more torque is required. That's when a powerful "hammer hits the anvil." Check out the slideshow.

Two Trend Setters in Shanghai

Two Trend Setters in Shanghai It wasn't the location that prompted McGill University trained architects Raefer Wallis and Sacha Silva to move their design business to Shanghai, China. It was their spirit of adventure. The two used these same qualities in tackling the transformation of an old Nanjing Road Post Office into a new hotel and eatery. Featuring state-of-the-art new lighting fixtures, finish materials, and hardware, the 20,000 sq ft, carbon-free renovation will make a stylish addition to the trendy shopping district.
