Tofu Ingredient Greens Solar Panels

An ingredient found in tofu may soon be used to make solar panels less toxic and cheaper to fabricate. Chemical researchers at the University of Liverpool found that magnesium chloride, which is used to coagulate tofu and also as a bath salt, can be an effective alternative to the toxic cadmium chloride commonly used in production of thin film solar cells. As explained in this video, the chemical is completely safe, non-hazardous, and low cost and can be substituted for cadmium chloride without compromising solar cell performance.

Liquid Handling Systems Run Gamut

Liquid handling equipment for today's laboratory runs the gamut from inexpensive handheld pipettes to full-blown robotic systems costing $1 million or more. However, more facilities are opting for mid-range handling systems that pack some of the whistles and bells of the upper-end fully automated systems into less complex, lower volume benchtop models. Affordability and ease of operation are key criteria, and instrument manufacturers have turned on the production faucet.

World's Most Sensitive Thermometer

Need to take a super accurate temperature measurement? You may want to check out a new thermometer developed by physics researchers in Australia. And just how accurate is it? Try three times more precise than anything in existence, with an ability to measure temperature differences to 30 billionths of a degree in one second. The technology uses light to measure temperature. Moreover, the new technique could possibly be redesigned for ultra-sensitive measurements of pressure or humidity.

Dandelion Goes from Weed to Rubber

The Russian dandelion, a pesky weed to most U.S. homeowners, could soon take on a much loftier role as a source of rubber for automobile tires and other uses. Indeed, this dandelion was brought to the U.S. during World War II as a possible alternative source of rubber due to the latex contained in its root structure. Now, a U.S. rubber products company has teamed with a European agricultural biotech firm to engineer and produce improved dandelion strains with superior agronomic performance, latex quality, and yields.

EPA Finalizes TCE Risk Assessment

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued its long-awaited final assessment of the health risks associated with trichloroethylene, or TCE, finding it harmful to humans and the environment. The chemical is commonly used as a stain remover in the dry cleaning industry as well as in spray aerosol degreasers. Health risks were cited among workers exposed to the chemical as well as consumers using spray cans containing TCE as degreasers and protective fixatives.

Leukemia Drug Helps Fight Other Cancers

The problem with some cancer drugs is that while they're effective against one type of tumor, they can have unintended negative consequences elsewhere. Now, cancer researchers have found a class of drug where the unintended consequence is a win-win. The drugs, called p110δ inhibitors, not only show remarkable efficacy against leukemia, for which they were intended, but can restrict tumor growth and spreading of a broad range of cancers as well as reduce the chances for relapse.

Derisking Hydrogen as a Fuel Source

If hydrogen is to realize its potential as a future fuel source, it has to be derisked. Now, scientists in Switzerland think they've done just that. They've developed a way of transforming hydrogen gas into formic acid in a single step, then transforming the liquid back into hydrogen gas. The system, based on two chemical reactions, solves hydrogen's safety issues as it results in a liquid that is less flammable than gasoline and more cheaply transported.

'NaNose' Sniffs Out Lung Disease

They call it NaNose technology. While it's a clever play on words, this nanotech development is nothing short of life-saving. The NaNose is a breathalyzer that detects lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. The highly sensitive device can readily detect in exhaled breath the volatile organic compounds put off by lung cancer tumors. Not only that, it can differentiate between benign and malignant lesions and identify different cancer subtypes.

Nanotubes Take Water from Dry Air

Taking their cue from nature, researchers have invented a way to capture water from arid air using carbon nanotubes. Fascinated by how the Stenocara beetle survives in the desert by using its wings to take in water molecules from the morning mist, the researchers were able to imitate the process by creating a "hygroscopic scaffold." The scaffold consists of a water-loving hydrophilic top and water-repelling super-hydrophobic bottom. The array attracts water molecules from the air and traps them inside, without using any energy.
