Carbon Nanotube Super Black is the New... Black

A new carbon nanotube-based coating can absorb 99.96% of incident radiation, the highest ever recorded, making it the world's darkest surface. The material, called Vantablack, is so dark that the human eye cannot perceive any features on the surface. Typically, super black materials are applied at very high temperatures, limiting the kinds of materials that can be coated. But Vantablack can be applied using a low temperature process, making it suitable for temperature-sensitive optical materials, electronics, and aluminum. Because it greatly reduces stray light, the coating shows promise in telescopes and sensitive instrumentation.

Dual Shaft Disperser by Mixer Direct
Mixer Direct

The dual shaft disperser is a versatile and cost-effective system used in high viscosity mixing situations. It consists of a high speed disperser and a low speed anchor scraper that feeds the material back in to the disperser. Other options include a vacuum seal, portable container, and explosion proof options.

I Can See Clearly Now...

Hydrophobic coatings repel water and cause it to bead up on a surface. But this creates visibility problems. Scientists at the Agricultural Research Service have created a hydrophilic coating from inexpensive chemicals like ethyl cyanoacrylate, otherwise known as super glue, and bovine serum albumin, an agricultural protein. The coating causes water to spread across the treated surface, making it transparent.

Shotblasting Prepares the Path to Fun

Dreamworld, Australia's biggest theme park, has miles of concrete walkways that were showing the wear and tear of years' worth of foot traffic. Before resurfacing the paths with an epoxy treatment, engineers used a diesel ride-on shotblaster to remove the old coatings, followed by a smaller walk-behind unit that treated edges and hard-to-get areas.

Laser Marking, Specialty Metallics Help Labels Pop

To take advantage of crowded and competitive shelf space, packagers must make their labels stand out. Sun Chemical showcased several systems at ExpoPrint Latin America 2014 to do just that: a new laser marking system that creates bar codes and use-by dates on the package after the sealing process and a series of specialty metal coatings designed for sensitive food packaging applications.

Friction Products & Research . . .

Nitriding a New Titanium

Titanium is a lightweight alternative to the heavy materials in diesel truck engines, but has poor tribological qualities, especially in metal-to-metal applications. Researchers explored various surface treatments to improve titanium's frictional coefficient and wear performance, and discovered that solution nitriding shows the greatest promise. Solution nitriding is not a coating process, but a thermochemical treatment that integrates nitrogen into the titanium matrix.

Friction Correlates with Crystal Orientation

Japanese scientists have created a new technique to produce materials with specific frictional properties. They can make both energy-saving, low-friction materials for use in motors and high-friction materials for use in braking systems, thanks to experiments that revealed the correlation between friction conditions and the crystal orientation of the material.
