Finding Chemical Needles in Haystacks

Finding Chemical Needles in Haystacks Two contenders for the portable detection of trace chemicals — ion mobility spectroscopy (IMS) and differential ion mobility spectroscopy (DMS) — are considered in this detailed report from Sensors magazine. Good for the on-site detection of chemical warfare agents, explosives, or narcotics, both methods are based upon ionization; sources may be either radioactive or non-radioactive, as with UV, plasma, or carbon nanotube. One method, however, offers significant advantages over the other in terms of sensitivity, size, and data characterization.

Machining Super Alloys is No Sweat

Machining Super Alloys is No Sweat Heat-resistant super alloys are difficult to machine. But an American Machinist article says the latest tool materials and cutting processes are significantly more efficient. For machining, cemented carbide inserts and SiAlON ceramics are useful (and to a lesser extent, whiskered ceramics). Treatment and aging of the workpiece affects machining.

If Good for the Aerospace Industry . . .

If Good for the Aerospace Industry... Then it may be good for other industry applications as well. These thermal management products — from quilted microporous insulation to insulating tapes and nonwoven ceramic fiber mats — meet a wide range of extreme demands and harsh environments. Moreover, they have proven their mettle in projects like the Joint Strike Fighter, Boeing's 777 — even the Gemini and Apollo missions.

Sensitive Social and Security Storage

Sensitive Social and Security Storage A move by the UK to create a database to fight terrorism and crime raises the same issues as confront commercial data-collection efforts. Computerworld points to the need to come to grips with data from phone conversations, e-mail, instant messaging, blogs, and social networking sites. And don't forget: the data must be secure.

Basic Wireless Protection

Basic Wireless ProtectionFor wireless users, interception of data during transmission is a significant security threat. Whether the breach is a rogue access point or a Wi-Fi eavesdropper, the defense is encryption and authentication. CSO recommends coupling these measures with strong passwords, tough access-control policies, and segregation of traffic via VPNs and virtual LANs.
