Sanctions Run Risk of Russian Retaliation

With the downing of a Malaysian airliner attributed to pro-Russian separatists as the catalyst, stiffened U.S. and EU sanctions on Russia run increased risk of retaliation against Western interests and companies. A detailed analysis by IHS Jane's Intelligence Review says the new edicts will likely push the Russian economy into recession — but that the country will not back down in confronting Ukraine. Countermeasures could be imposed on Western firms and individuals operating in Russia — and there is always concern about access to the International Space Station using Russian supply rockets.

Nano Patch Spots Soldier Stress

University of Massachusetts Amherst researchers are developing a skin patch to detect stress in soldiers and other warfighters. The device would use nanotechnology and flexible electronics to test a wearer's sweat for chemicals that indicate stress and fatigue. Data could then be transmitted wirelessly for analysis — enabling the identification of individuals experiencing stress but not aware of it, such as drone pilots.

Rad Hardening Goes Submicron

Radiation hardened circuits are now being implemented on 45 nm processes. An extensive article in Military & Aerospace Electronics details some of these fabrication methods and techniques for increasing resistance to radiation effects. These are aimed at both integrated circuits and materials. This includes building silicon circuits on sapphire or other insulating substrates rather than using "traditional" all-silicon processes. The silicon-on-insulator (SOI) and silicon-on-sapphire circuits can survive radiation doses "orders of magnitude" greater than all-silicon ICs. Using magnetoresistive memory, which is not subject to ionization-induced data loss, is another approach.

MEADS Demos Comprehensive Networking Among Allies

Recently near Rome, Italy MEADS (Medium Extended Air Defense System) demonstrated extended networking capabilities among partner nations. The two-week tests included operations run by the German and Italian military. Shown were addition and removal of system elements under simulated combat, and integration with other systems. One example was simultaneous engagement of a simulated cruise missile and other threats.

Predator B Sets Endurance Record

General Atomics said its Predator B extended range (ER) aircraft ended its initial flight test period with a record endurance flight. While the company did not reveal the exact flight time, the ER model incorporates two external fuel tanks and a fuel management system that balances fuel among the external, wing, and fuselage tanks — raising endurance from 27 to 33-35 hours.

Radar Gets New Maritime Tracking Mode

Thales has come up with a Maritime Moving Target Indication mode for its I-Master radar surveillance system. The capability is implemented via a software package and can function simultaneously with the radar's Ground Moving Target Indication and Synthetic Aperture Radar modes. By enabling these modes in a single, compact sensor, the unit is suited for both manned and unmanned aircraft.

Boeing Designing DARPA Spaceplane

Under contract to the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Boeing is one of three companies designing a reusable launch vehicle for small satellite payloads. The vehicle will carry a satellite and upper stage to altitude for orbital deployment. The XS-1 Experimental Spaceplane is the latest program to seek the aerospace "Holy Grail" of an unmanned booster with costs and operational characteristics comparable to modern aircraft.
