Breathe Life into Your Designs

Increasingly, it's not enough to create a high-quality 3D model. Now, management wants to leverage that model to generate technical animations and photo realistic movies, notes Machine Design. That's especially true when manufacturers of complex machines and systems must explain these technologies to customers, partners, board members, and investors. This article explains how to meet this challenge, using a traditional engineering workstation. Among the popular tools: Autodesk's Maya, 3ds max, and Softimage. Some CAD packages offer embedded animation software in which movements of an assembly can be choreographed, but programs like Maya offer far more capabilities (see videos of Maya 2015).

How to Master Multi-CAD Data

If you work with multiple CAD programs, you can ease your load with the latest version of Creo, claims PTC. Version 3.0 offers "Unite Technology," which enables CAD data of varying formats to be used in the full range of PTC Creo apps. You can also convert existing legacy data to PTC Creo more easily — and only when needed. This video gives more details on how the new release can encourage collaboration and boost productivity.

Rebirth of the 3-Wheeler

The UK's Morgan motor company can't afford to make design mistakes, not when its profitability depends on manufacturing just 1200 custom cars a year. This article describes the company's design strategy, including its use of the Autodesk Alias surfacing tool in the relaunch of the company's iconic 3-wheeler model (see video). The software allows surface design and rendering to be created, changed, and improved before any physical tooling is needed.

CAM Converts 2D to 3D

Need to transform a 2D part model to 3D for manufacture? Alphacam 2014 R2 lets programmers convert an imported DXF or DWG 2D drawing into a 3D model automatically. Operators can also optimize five-axis tool paths to specific machine configurations and rotational axis limits, and any changes are highlighted at the programming level. Want more on CAM? Read about the latest features in Vericut, which simulates operations on a wide variety of machine tools.

From Coffee to Home Security

There's no end to the applications made possible by 3D printing. Design World reports on a new ph probe used in coffee processing that was manufactured using selective laser sintering. And for an alternative to the hidden key in the flower pot, Kisi, a Brooklyn firm that started in Munich, Germany, harnessed the MakerBot Replicator 3D printer to produce a home security device that communicates with your smartphone (see embedded video).

Simulating the Traffic Environment

For engineers designing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), Germany-based dSpace has updated its simulation tool — ASM Traffic — for testing such active safety features as autonomous emergency braking and emergency steering assistance. The tool can simulate a test vehicle, road networks, a large number of vehicles in transit, pedestrians, and traffic signs. Virtual sensors on the simulated test vehicle detect such objects and signal the ADAS to take appropriate action. Sample the software in this video.

Tap That Intern Talent

Think those interns just take up space? Read this article on how appliance giant Whirlpool leveraged the skills of an intern to create a collaborative platform for its engineers. The platform relies on social media concepts and was created using open source software: Drupal for content management, SilverStripe for Web development, and Apache Solr for enterprise search. It also works closely with the PTC Windchill PLM system and ESTECO's modeFRONTIER, an optimization integration platform.

Rx for Compliance Headaches

Meeting international standards is essential for the development of countless products. and a key step in that process is early submission of design and manufacturing reports. Among them: First Article Inspection (FAI) reports, drawings, and other materials that show the geometry of a product before it is built. With the new SolidWorks inspection application, companies can quickly re-use existing design data and content to create accurate inspection reports to speed regulatory approval.
