Let's Cash in on $140 Billion of Annual Energy-efficiency Savings

That's the theme of this detailed analysis of the opportunities available to reduce power consumption by investing in state-of-the-art motor-control technology. The author steps through the pivotal role electric motors play in the operation of pumps, industrial machinery, heating/ventilation equipment, and other applications. Then he details how microcontrollers can deliver incredible energy savings. For example, we learn that adding a "simple electronic drive" to a brushless DC fan motor operating in an HVAC system can yield a 200% gain in efficiency. Discussion points: sensorless field-oriented control with pulse-width modulation and dual-motor control.

Servo Integrates Components and Performance

Sure, integrating motor, drive, and sensor saves commissioning time. Sometimes there's a concession in performance. Not with this actuator. It offers accuracy, low energy consumption, and compactness while delivering a smooth torque profile at speeds to 283 rpm. The design uses a stiff cross-roller bearing to withstand high axial and radial forces and high tilt moments.

VFD Delivers High-performance Response

Machine designers focused on optimizing motor efficiency and on conserving energy must take a look at these new all-in-one variable-frequency drives. They're suited, according to a press release in Modern Machine Shop, for low-performance (pumps, fans, etc.) and high-performance applications, and come in 200 to 690 V models.

Frequency Inverters Provide Record-setting Torque

Plant Engineer informs readers of a ball-mill runoff test conducted for a mining-industry customer. The application requires frequency inverters to drive low-speed directly-coupled motors at up to 25,0000 Nm shaft torque. The equipment is said to be the highest testing load ever achieved by an electrical-equipment manufacturer in the southern hemisphere.

Steelmaker Steals Savings with VFDs

At the Jewett, TX facility of Nucor Steel, variable-frequency drives installed on one-speed motors have replaced two-speed motors and the savings have been tremendous. AutomationWorld has the story, describing the new setups installed on the plant's 28 ft diameter cooling-tower fans. Annual electrical-cost savings: $38,000. And, there also are substantial maintenance and downtime savings.

Impressive Demo of Servo-drive Coordination

In this video demonstration, watch as a pair of servo drives complete what appears to be an impossible task. I/O handshaking between the two drives is the communication link. The task: toss a golf ball through a spinning hoop. In slow motion, one really comes to appreciate the high level of coordination, precision, and repeatability.

Servo Chases Cable Chasing Away

This decentralized servo drive installs quickly and easily with three screw-lock connections — no cable chasing, no panel wiring. A write-up in Process & Control Engineering describes the benefits of using the drive, including reduced cabinet space and simplified machine setup. A hybrid cable delivers power and fieldbus communication so the drives can operate directly in series.

DC Drive Demise? Not So Fast

"The demise of DC variable-speed drives has been predicted for years," according to a new-product press release. However, they can't be beat when applications require accurate control of speed and torque at low or zero speeds. Presented here: a series of three-phase digital DC drives (12-2250 A) noted for their energy efficiency (regenerative braking), among other features.

Driving AC and DC Motors

This part of IEC 61800, available now from IHS, specifies electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for power drive systems (PDSs). These are adjustable speed AC or DC motor drives. Requirements are stated for PDSs with converter input and/or output voltages (line-to-line voltage), up to 35 kVac rms. PDSs covered by this standard are those installed in residential, commercial, and industrial locations.
