Flexible Solutions Pump Up Grid Capacity

Upgrading the grid to handle additional demand has traditionally been undertaken by adding expensive wire in the air or ground. Solutions that improve the capacity of existing lines and provide voltage support, collectively known as flexible AC transmission systems, are far more attractive — especially for grids and generation sources becoming ever more distributed. Switched capacitors are one option, but static VAR compensators (SVCs) and static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) make up 80% of the market. Transmission & Distribution World discusses the latter two technologies in detail, pointing out the latest innovations and developments in reducing the footprint of SVCs and STATCOMs while increasing their capacity. Power to the Pavement

With millions of miles of paved roads worldwide, not to mention driveways and parking lots, there are plenty of places to install roadway solar cells. Of course there are durability questions regarding mechanical wear and weathering, but Electric Light & Power says crowd funding is helping propel the technology to the next level.

Aluminum-air Battery Extends EV Range

It's easy to like a battery using everyday air as one of its components. This aluminum-air battery is not rechargeable, but is conceived as a 1,000 mile range extender for more traditional battery technologies. It would require water top-ups every few hundred miles, according to Gizmag.com, and could be recycled when spent.

Group Motor Installations Save Money

For installations with multiple smaller motors, the NEC allows a "group motor protection" installation method where many motors can be protected by one overcurrent protection device, saving components and space. The technique is outlined by Machine Design, which points out that the increased up-front design costs can result in overall installation savings.
