Enter Keysight Technologies

Although Agilent Technologies announced it last November, Keysight Technologies officially split off from the parent company on August 1. Focusing exclusively on the electronic test and measurement part of Agilent's operations, it will remain a wholly owned subsidiary until November 2014, when it will become an independent entity, its stock publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Company executives promise employees, shareholders, and customers a seamless transition, as well as a keen understanding of its legacy from both Agilent and predecessor Hewlett-Packard.

Measure the Load

Products ranging from cellphones to electric cars rely on power supplies to keep them running. The supplies have to adequately power the product, while at the same time providing over-voltage, over-current, over-power, and other protection. This product survey describes different kinds of electronic loads for testing the supplies, detailing their operating modes, measurement capabilities, and specifications.

Rotate Without Shaking

Cars and other electro-mechanical systems must endure rotational and torsional vibration and other types of disturbances. This piece details measuring deviations from expected performance through a sensor at each end of the power train connected to a counter, presenting measurements in either time domain or angle domain and displaying vibration, force, strain, voltage, and other parameters on a single instrument.

How Bad is Worst Case?

An old adage warns never to claim to expect the worst. You never know how bad the worst can be until you encounter it. Nevertheless, you want to anticipate worst case performance before releasing a product to manufacturing to ensure that it will operate within specification. This item demonstrates how to set up tests to identify worst case and analyze the results to determine if it is good enough.

To Know What You Are Looking At

Because the quality of an individual part or assembly that you are inspecting can vary between whatever limits you set, machine vision must accomplish two interrelated tasks. You have to determine whether the part passes or fails, but you also have to unambiguously identify each part for tracking, legal, and quality-control purposes. This case study reports one company's successes on both fronts.

Board AOI in 2D or 3D

Co-planarity and other third-dimension issues limit the effectiveness of 2D automated optical inspection (AOI) systems. At the same time, 3D solutions generally suffer from slow speed and limited resolution. This video presents a new system introduced at APEX 2014 that strikes a workable compromise by providing both functions in one box, thereby maximizing performance and speed and minimizing cost.

Two Heads are Better Than One

No. I don't mean two test heads or any other piece of hardware. This story tells of two engineers — one with an analog background and the other entrenched in digital technology — trying to find a solution to a problem that neither of them has ever seen. It reports the progress of their analysis and success — and alludes to a stream of four-letter words attesting to a teeny big of frustration along the way.

Preventing Component Counterfeits in Avionics

This part of technical specification IEC 62668, available now from IHS, defines requirements for avoiding counterfeit, recycled, and fraudulent components when these components are purchased outside of franchised distributor networks for use in the aerospace, defense, and high performance (ADHP) industries. This practice applies only when there are no practical alternatives.
