Can Smartphone Technologies Identify Genetically Modified Foods?

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack proposes that smartphones help consumers identify foods made with genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), but some say that's not good enough. Legislators around the country are proposing labeling initiatives, some required and some voluntary, to help consumers identify genetically-modified corn or soy in processed food. Vilsack's idea goes further than simple labeling: he suggests embedding product and nutrition information — including GMO status — into a bar code that consumers could read using a smartphone app. However, only 56% of American adults carry smartphones, say critics, leaving 44% still in the dark.

Belt Designed to Move Meat

A new flexible mechanical conveyor belt is said to last 39x longer than a competitor's product, and features an open design that makes it ideal for meat and poultry processing. The belt's metal hinges move in two directions, reducing friction and wear while ensuring proper tracking. The open design also makes the belt self-cleaning: as it turns on the conveyor it pushes out any trapped debris.

Boosting OEE for Bean Canning

If you pursue real-time manufacturing performance, must it mean new equipment and controls? Not necessarily, if Bush Brothers' experience is any indication. The prolific baked beans producer found a software solution that was easy for operators to use, that automated data collection without creating tedious-to-scour spreadsheets, and improved overall equipment efficiency (OEE) from use of existing canning equipment.

Monitoring Genetically Modified Foods

The DIN EN ISO 21569 International Standard describes the procedure to qualitatively detect genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and derived products by analyzing the nucleic acids extracted from the sample under study. The main focus is on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based amplification methods. The standard also gives general requirements for the specific detection and identification of target nucleic acid sequences (DNA) and for the confirmation of the identity of the amplified DNA sequence.
