Thinking Outside the Rectangular Polyhedron

The pace of technology constantly challenges us to find answers to questions we've never encountered before. Conventional or time-honored solutions no longer work. We have to learn to think outside the box. This article from Business Week advocates addressing these challenges by recruiting more "weirdos" to join the team — not people who are weird just for the sake of it, but people who may not fit into the mainstream and genuinely look at problems differently from the rest of us. The author has found that the right Weirdos (capital "W") may disrupt the normal equilibrium of an organization, but their unusual ideas and points of view can enormously contribute to the team's success.

A Contrary Opinion to Welcoming Apple into the Workplace

No one can question Apple's and the iPhone's success in consumer markets. But success with consumers doesn't necessarily mean the best solution for businesses. This opinion piece begins by accepting the iPhone's popularity, but then laments that other products — in particular a new offering from Blackberry — provide many more business-oriented features to help companies manage today's mobile workforce.

Looking at the Actual Bottom Line

Not each department's bottom line, but the bottom line for the entire operation. If manager A takes on extra costs that yield benefits in other departments exceeding that cost, the entire organization benefits. Mandating that everyone shave 20% off their department's budget may sabotage the company's profitability. Under such an edict, manager A doesn't spend that money because, "It will make me look bad compared to the other managers."
