Nanosatellites — satellites measured in centimeters rather than feet — have evolved from experimental ventures to standard tools for scientists conducting environmental and astronomical research. One design called a "sprite" comes in the form of a silicon chip not much larger than a postage stamp, while others are slightly larger. These mini "sats" perform many of the same functions as those carried out by larger satellites, but they remain in orbit only a few weeks. All leverage miniaturization technology initially developed for consumer electronics. In the next five years, space companies will launch nearly 1,000 nanosats into low-Earth orbit (see video).

NATO has contracted Boeing to install digital flight decks and avionics on 13 of its AWACS aircraft. The update will ensure compliance with current and future air traffic control requirements, enabling wider access to airspace around the world, saving time and fuel. With modern flight deck systems, only three crew will be needed instead of the current four, further reducing costs.
