Which Biomarkers Predict Longevity?

Could a medical laboratory test accurately predict the probability of a person's death within five years? New research from Europe suggests "yes," reports Dark Daily, and the test could be as simple as analyzing four particular biomarkers in the blood. That finding comes from measuring 106 biomarkers in blood samples of subjects using NMR spectroscopy and examining medical records in study participants. Get the details on the most crucial biomarkers.

Getting a Lift from Vacuum

Aging baby boomers who lose mobility can also lose access to the upper floors of their homes. A chair lift can get the elderly and disabled upstairs, but high costs and the difficulties involved in getting in and out of the chair make this a less-than-ideal option, notes the author of this Hydraulics & Pneumatics article. His preferred alternative: a pneumatic elevator featuring a passenger cabin that's lifted by vacuum. The story explains how the technology works, why it beats conventional elevators, and why vacuum was chosen over compressed air to give the disabled a lift.

Nano Generator Powers Pacemaker

Self-powered pacemakers might allow heart patients to avoid repeat surgeries for battery replacement, courtesy of a nano generator developed by Korean researchers. The piezoelectric device harvests energy from body movements. The goal was to develop an in-body battery charger but the device produces enough power to directly stimulate the heart of an animal subject. Up next, self-powered heart monitors and implantable devices.

Gigabit Wi-Fi Picks Up the Pace

The 802.11ac standard promises to shift Wi-Fi speeds into high gear thanks to a feature called multi-user, multiple-input and multiple-output. This technology enables access points to send data streams of as much as 433 Mbps to at least three users simultaneously. Large public Wi-Fi networks, such as healthcare facilities, will benefit from this improved performance initially, with home networks following in a few years.

Survey Says: Wireless Use Almost Ubiquitous

Wireless applications in hospitals are booming according to a recent survey. In 2010, 89% of hospitals surveyed used electronic health records. That sounds pretty good. But now, in 2014, 98% of hospitals surveyed report EHR implementation. Likewise, wireless nurse call systems, patient monitoring equipment, and barcode medication administration are surging. Healthcare Facilities Management tabulates the survey results.

Nano Material Forms Puncture-proof Gloves

A novel nano material promises to protect healthcare workers and patients from the risks associated with needle sticks. Based on a shear thickening fluid (STF), the material hardens temporarily under abrupt pressure to prevent punctures and cuts. First developed at the University of Delaware, the technology is under commercialization by STF Technologies. Initial efforts are focused on gloves, but in future will broaden to include body armor.
