The Internet of Everything: Worth the Cost of Implementation?

It may not connect quite everything, but the Internet of Things (IoT) promises to change the face of manufacturing — connecting sensors, devices, and machines to each other, to Internet services, and to applications. The advantages are clear, but some manufacturers may wonder if it's worth the cost of implementation. According to this piece from Plant Engineering, they should consider two enabling factors. First, many factory automation systems already use Ethernet and IP protocols, which are the backbone of IoT. Second, hardware upgrades are less expensive thanks to the consumer market driving down semiconductor prices.

The Why and How of Rotameters

The Why and How of Rotameters

Why are rotameters good for measuring liquid and gas flow? One benefit: they don't use external power. So besides saving electricity, they can be used in hazardous areas. Other pluses: they can operate to 20,000 psi and 750 F; they are linear over a 10-to-1-flow range; and they offer excellent repeatability.

Calibrating Sensors

How often should level and pressure sensors be calibrated? Once a year answers Flow Control, but be aware of factors that affect accuracy. Compensate for or program away the effects of variables like temperature and dielectric constant using zero and span adjustments. Also, make sure the sensor is properly installed, for example with the right torque.

Takes One to Know One

Assignment — design an effective HMI for plant operators. Start by thinking like an operator, suggests Control Design, which offers some best practices. Understand what the operator needs to know to control the process and don't distract with fancy doodads like 3D animation.

High Security, Low Power

The twin challenges of wireless sensors are battery life and security. This video demonstrates a microcontroller designed for both. It has a sleep current of only 18 nanoamps, which is significant for long battery life since sensor nodes typically spend most of their time asleep. Upon awakening, its embedded data can be safely encrypted for security.

Stuck with Cartridge Heater Bore Seizure?
Dalton Electric Heating Co., Inc.

Seized cartridge heaters cost hours of maintenance time and machine down-time. Watt-Flex® split sheath cartridge heaters expand when energized to maximize heat transfer and contract when de-energized to eliminate bore seizure. View our short video.

Containing Seedy Dust

Pellitizing seeds created too much dust for one processor. The dust arose when the seeds were mixed with gypsum powder and glue to form the pellets. Solution? Rather than cutting the gypsum bags open and dumping the contents into a bin, install a bulk bag discharger with flexible screw conveyor.

Dustless Bulk Transfer

Do you need to transfer product from a drum for processing? This video demonstrates a drum transfer system in which the material is completely contained by being fed through a flexible bag, which attaches to the drum. The drum is then pneumatically lifted and moved into position to feed the next processing station through a discharge canister.

Bubble Bath for RO Filters

Goals: Improve reverse osmosis filtration efficiency and increase intervals between cleanings. Water World describes a new process that does the job. It cleans the filters by combining the physical action of bubbling with specially blended cleaning chemicals. In a field test, the procedure reduced feed pressure and increased cleaning intervals from 10 days to more than 50.

New Uses for Waste Carbon Dioxide

How can you reduce atmospheric CO₂ and create new industrial processes at the same time? Chemical Processing describes several projects that use waste carbon dioxide instead of petroleum-based processes to manufacture a variety of chemicals. Example: use concentrated sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce syngas for conversion to kerosene.
