Getting Your Coordinates Right

Accurate measurement of workpieces is vital to effective quality control in metals manufacturing. Previously, that has often meant taking cumbersome pieces of metal to offline metrology stations. But that is no longer the case. As Cutting Tool Engineering reports, lightweight, portable coordinate measuring equipment is finding increasing use on the shopfloor. Such equipment also permits the integration of measurement operations directly with a master CAD database to help 'close the loop' between design intent and actual manufacture. Admittedly, portable equipment may sometimes lack sufficient accuracy, but it is good enough for "90% of the jobs in 90% of machining shops."

Magnetic Movement

Here's a video guide from Metalworking Canada to Huron's KX50 machining center intended primarily for moldmaking and aerospace work. The machine weighs 32 tons and can handle workpieces weighing as much as 6 tons. An additional feature that sets it apart: a torque motor for axis positioning that relies on magnetic force with no physical transmission of movement.

Smoothing Out the Edges

Two contra-rotating flap wheels enable a new deburring machine to carry out operations on both sides of a metal sheet simultaneously. The Rolei BE 5 from CS Unitec can treat stainless steel and aluminum sheets up to 0.2 in. thick in fine or standard mode in a single pass with no need for additional treatment.

Inserts Take New Angle

Tungaloy's TungSix line of indexable drills for use with metals including superalloys has been expanded to include diameters in the range 20-27 mm making the whole series extend from 20-54 mm. Two new inserts also feature a unique geometry that creates an obtuse angle against the corner part of the central-edge to provide enhanced impact resistance.

Micro-grooves can often form critical features in parts for such demanding application areas as aerospace. Moreover the tolerances involved can be extremely demanding. This report explains how one Indiana contract manufacturer producing a part with a full-radius 0.02 in. wide groove found just the right tool for the job.

Programming a Turn for the Better

When an Ohio-based manufacturer of complex parts for medical devices upgraded its machining capabilities with a new turn-mill center the transition was eased by the company's existing choice of programming software. As this video explains the combination of the Mazak machine and Delcam's PartMaker package enabled it to increase both productivity and part quality.
