Big Change in Industry Exhibition Format

Big Change in Industry Exhibition Format The run-up to this month's IMTS Show in Chicago has seen a major shake-up in the exhibition scene for the U.S. metal forming industry. The Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) has struck a deal to partner with the FABTECH International & AWS Welding Show, which also includes METALFORM. "Following the 2008 International Manufacturing Technology Show (September 8-13, 2008 at McCormick Place in Chicago), IMTS will no longer feature a Metal Forming & Fabricating/Lasers Pavilion. A new Non-Traditional Machining & Processes Pavilion will debut at IMTS 2010." The deal, considered a win-win agreement for exhibitors and attendees alike, provides a single comprehensive event for the entire industry.

Machining on the Level

Machining on the Level The latest addition to Makino's range of five-axis horizontal machining centers is aimed specifically at the production of high-precision aluminum parts. The MAG1 has X,Y and Z-axis travels of 1520 mm, 1100 mm, and 1350 mm, respectively, allowing for part sizes as large as 1500 sq mm and 1,300 kg in weight. A particularly interesting feature is a three-point support system said to eliminate any need for leveling maintenance.

A Slanted Story

A Slanted Story Peter J. Harry literally bet his house that he knew how to make a machining business work. That was 30 years ago when he sold his home to get the cash to buy the first CNC slant bed lathe of its kind in Canada. Now Eldorado Tool & Manufacturing has more CNC machines than employees, 80 against 70 — a statistic that embodies his aim of always having the capacity to meet any unexpected demand. Get the lowdown on the key machines with which Harry is basing his future expansion plans.

Servo Beats Hydraulics to the Punch

Servo Beats Hydraulics to the Punch A UK company is saving big by using a CNC punch press with a regenerative servo-actuated ram and energy management software in the controller. The Finn-Power E5 draws only 4.5 kW — about a third of the power consumed by a hydraulic equivalent of 200 kN punching capacity. What's more, in one year of operation, only four of the tools in the 20-station turret have needed resharpening.

Pushy People Needed

Pushy People Needed Lots of companies think that the "leaner" they are, the better they must be. But, as this article from metalforming.com explains, a metal stamping shop in Wisconsin found that "fatter" is sometimes better. Data from the company's network of shop floor machine controllers indicated that expensive presses were often lying idle for the lack of an operator to come along and press a few buttons.

Get a Hold of This

Get a Hold of This Resembling a giant handcuff, the Atling self-centering hydraulic steady rest is capable of securing workpieces measuring up to 38 in. diameter. But the unit, the largest ever built by LMC Workholding, is also capable of a delicate touch — it has a minimum clamp size of just 13.4 in. and features a linear encoder able to measure parts to +/- five microns.

Chucks Away

Chucks Away A small machining shop in North Carolina specializing in high-precision aircraft parts has based its business on the use of collet-ready spindles that dispense with the need for conventional chucks. Mike Langlois, owner of Aero Precision Machine, says the approach is ideal for the type of thin-wall, high-tolerance parts the company makes, and provides real pay-offs in set-up times, maximum machining speeds, and product quality.

Probe Works in Toughest Conditions

Probe Works in Toughest Conditions The new MP250 touch probe for grinding machines from Renishaw offers sub-micron 3D measurement, even for contoured surfaces. Claimed to be the first ever strain gauge inspection device for grinding applications, the unit is specifically sealed to provide resistance against particle-laden coolants and high temperatures. It also features a simple hard-wired connection to the machine control.

Taking Off the Brakes

Taking Off the Brakes There are few businesses in the world where rapid response and ultra-precision are more important than Formula 1 racing. So how did one brake calliper specialist shave timescales even more? Abolish all integration issues between its design and manufacturing operations. Selection of the CAM system, it turns out, was crucial.
