Projecting the Capabilities of Future Fighter Jets

Naturally, one would expect the latest and greatest technologies to be incorporated into the design of next generation military fighter jets. It's a testament of how far some technologies have advanced when the explorations include 3D printing and self-healing materials. The truth is that additive manufacturing has progressed so much that the "what might be" list includes on-board 3D printers so that drones could be built while the fighter is in flight. Also, since fighters sustain damage, why not components made from self-healing materials? Here are a few projections that BAE Systems makes for jets that won't fly until 2040.

Black Oxide Boosts Turbine Uptime

Frequent unplanned climbs up 200 ft towers, or 15 immersions to create a protective surface? For wind turbine builders trying to boost gearbox reliability, probably not a tough choice. SKF says black oxide, applied to bearing rings or rollers, increases turbine uptime through corrosion resistance and reduced fretting, micropitting, and cracking. One customer reported failure rates dropping from >40% to <1%.

Protection for Precision Bearings

After a history of supplying workholding components, Fixtureworks stepped easily into a new niche: covered bearings. The company developed ready-to-ship urethane covered bearings — contrasting typical long lead times for specialized products. The smooth coatings, in hardness to 95 durometer, are cast directly onto precision sealed ball bearings, producing quiet, non-marring, and abrasion resistant durability.

Gearbox Designs Reach a Happy Medium

Wind turbines now supply a quarter of electricity demand in a couple states, with totals rising in the U.S. and the world. Still, failures are frequent and gearbox longevity targets rarely achieved. Thus, novel technologies or approaches are implemented in virtually every new installation. Among the trends: selecting medium-speed over high-speed gearboxes, with analytic software guiding the decisions.

Add or Subtract to Make Tools?

As additive technologies merge into mainstream manufacturing, comparisons of which technology is best in given applications are inevitable. Here's one that compares additive processes to conventional cutting to make metal tool cores. The win can go either way, but the advantage tips toward 3D printing when it helps optimize cooling channel designs.

Metal Alloy: Bend It Like Bamboo

Want stronger alloys? Consider mimicking bamboo. Researchers at North Carolina State discovered that strength and resiliency in bamboo (and bone) sources from a cell structure featuring gradually-increasing grain size from surface to center. Gizmag reports on tests using similar gradient structure to improve ductility in copper, iron, nickel, and stainless-steel alloys.

Bright Future Awaits Blackest Material

Developed for space, the world's blackest material will find ample use on earth, too. The coating absorbs 99.96% of surrounding light, conducts heat 7x better than copper, and has 10x steel's tensile strength. Yet, unlike other carbon nanotube materials, it can be applied on low-melting point surfaces, making it useful for apertures, baffles, and improving optical instrument sensitivity.

Fiber Springs Deliver Fuel Savings, Plus

The central objective of lighter vehicle components is fuel efficiency. But some replacement parts deliver bonus benefits, like fiber-reinforced polymer springs developed for Audi. They weigh 40% less than steel, saving that weight in a crucial chassis location. The result: greater driving precision and vibrational comfort from springs impervious to chemicals and that won't corrode even after getting chipped.

Springing for the Smart Option

Machined springs instead of coiled wire? Some might dismiss the proposal as preposterous, but this video reveals reasons that could trump the extra cost. For starters, predictable and precise spring rates for compression and tension, or lateral offset and bending. Another plus: single-piece construction with the ability to machine threads and other fittings for attachments.
