Academy Seeks Best Engineering Video

To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering is looking for the best liked "Engineering for You" video — extolling the benefits to human welfare and the needs of society, and the lore of the profession. The number of "likes" logged for each of the 15 video finalists posted on the contest Web site before the September 1 closing date will determine the People's Choice winner. As of this writing, this clip featuring the voice of the late Neil Armstrong was in the lead.

Heavy-vehicle Gearbox Uses Dual-clutch Architecture

Volvo claims its I-Shift Dual Clutch transmission is the first of its kind for truck applications. As on autos, the arrangement allows the next gear to be "pre-engaged" for uninterrupted power delivery during gear changes, producing constant torque with no speed loss. Safety is improved, as when hauling logs over wet and uneven ground — with less wear on drivetrain components.

Ebook Provides Gear Unit Lowdown

The folks at Machine Design have available for download (with complimentary registration) an ebook on How Gear Units and Actuators Can Improve Machine Performance. Modern automation systems require greater precision along with faster speeds — with gear and actuator systems providing high torque in compact packages, for faster response with higher payloads.

Seed Conveyor Uses Wide Cleated Belt

Unverferth Manufacturing uses an 8 in. wide cleated belt within a 6 in. diameter steel tube to gently transport seeds in its conveyors from a storage "gravity box" for loading into a planter. In addition, an optional self-contained hydraulic pump system powered by an 8 hp gas engine eliminates the need for tying up a tractor power takeoff to load seed.

Inclined Lift is Europe's Largest

The Larchwandschragaufzug in Kaprun, Austria, is the largest funicular in Europe. The synchronized-winch driven system can lift 60 metric tons. Originally developed to transport power plant construction materials, the system today carries tourists, 185 at once, in just over four minutes up the 39°, 431 m (1,414 ft) high slope.

Steel Brakes to Stop 1,000 mph Car

Novel braking technology is needed to stop the Bloodhound jet/rocket-powered car when it attempts to reach 1,000 mph. While air brakes and parachutes will slow the vehicle to under 200 mph, steel disc brakes (with steel pads) will then take over, reaching 1,500 F (815 C) in the process. With the car's large wheels, carbon rotors from a jet fighter failed at half the speed needed.

Coupling Cuts Resonance

Miki Pulley's Step-Flex shaft coupling is configured to stop resonances in stepper motor and ball screw assemblies. The enabler is a two-part elastomer (made up of hard and softer elements) that damps vibrations from an actuator "hunting" for its home position with small, rapid adjustments. The different hardness layers also cut misalignment counter force — lowering heat load.

Springs Provide Pure Moment

Helical machined springs can integrate attachments to provide a pure moment when torque is applied. Unlike wire wound springs, which can bend or rotate under torque, machined springs rotate without any translation of the coil, as evidenced in this video for various end attachment methods.

Mid-range Loader Features CVT

Manitou's new MLT 960 is a mid-size telescopic loader geared for a longer reach than smaller multipurpose models, but less lift than heavy capacity handlers. Key features are a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for smooth driving and maximum traction and load sensing hydraulics that uses a variable piston pump (for less heat and more efficiency than a standard gear pump).

Detect Overheating on Ground Gear Surfaces

This ISO standard specifies procedures and requirements for the detection and classification of localized overheating on ground surfaces by chemical etch methods. The document applies to steel parts such as gears, shafts, splines, and bearings, and the process described is also useful for detection of surface anomalies that result from post-heat treatment machining such as hard turning, milling, and edge breaking (deburring) processes.
