Medical Gunboat is Crafty Carrier

Medical Gunboat is Crafty Carrier Reminiscent of the 1966 movie Fantastic Voyage, the medical mini-submarine developed by Tel Aviv University, Israel researchers signals progress in merging a drug candidate with a therapeutic delivery system. Used like a nano GPS system, it navigates the body. The biological nano-sized carrier will deliver RNA interference drugs to target cells, eliminating faulty proteins, restoring diseased cells, or killing cancerous ones. The diminutive dreadnought has homed in on leukocytes in lab mice with ulcerative colitis. Potential for the nano-submarine to address brain, breast, pancreatic, and other pathologies will be tested in near-term clinical trials.

Smarter Surfaces Through Chemistry

Smarter Surfaces Through Chemistry A team of Canadian scientists has imparted intelligence to metals used in medical implants. Chemical modification with specific etching mixtures yields nanoporous surfaces that stimulate bone building or retard unwanted cell growth. It is a clever way to improve healing and the success of metal implants and prosthetics.

Design Well with Others

Design Well with Others A Medical Product Manufacturing News article confirms the product engineering benefits of advance collaboration. Consulting with an injection molding specialist fine-tuned designs for a disposable breast coil system and biopsy device. Collaboration led to alternative material selection, better structural integrity, lower cost, and faster market introduction.

Powering Intravascular Microbots

Powering Intravascular Microbots The motor that moves a sensor-equipped miniature robot through human blood vessels is just 0.25 mm wide. This video shows how the scaled-down piezoelectric design effects in vivo microbot propulsion with output power of 4.25 μW. Remote-controlled mini-devices will aid minimally invasive surgery by increasing a surgeon's view and dexterity.

New Twist for Circuitry

New Twist for Circuitry Research expands on a non-coplanar mesh design that embeds electronics into flexible materials. The material retains electrical properties while bending up to 140% and corkscrew twisting up to 90 degrees. Flexibility comes from the silicon islands on which circuits are fabricated. It may stretch the boundaries of implantable design.

Imaging Touches on Realism

Imaging Touches on Realism Capturing the amorphous geometry of human hands to design custom prostheses for partial finger amputees was enabled with a laser scanning system. Scanned hand casts cut the time needed to create 3D digital CAD models by 60%. Medical Design Technology cites accuracy to within 0.05 mm of the actual cast.

Picture Fewer Fractures

Picture Fewer Fractures Data collected by Europe's Osteoporotic Virtual Physiological Human Project helps product development software model structural and fluid flow dynamics. Patient-specific simulations based on conventional diagnostic imaging aid fracture risk and location assessment. Merging simulation technology with diagnostic imaging should improve osteoporosis onset projection accuracy.
