Innovative imaging technology from Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany, generates multi-view movies of a beating heart and should advance understanding of heart defects and cardiac function. Medical News Today explains that high-speed, selective pane illumination microscopy generates high-resolution images of a zebrafish heart, breaking up the field into sections for viewing at different angles. The data are reassembled into synchronized 3D movies of the heart in motion. Cardiac contractions and nonperiodic phenomena are observed by use of optogenetics to briefly stop/start the heart.

The wax-coated open-cell foam is rigid at room temperature but pliable when heated. Shape-shifting robots could switch between the two states during surgical procedures.

The remarkably accurate hearing mechanism helps the Ormia ochracea fly locate its preferred prey — chirping crickets. This capability is being replicated in the form of a 2 mm wide microphone designed at the University of Texas to improve hearing aid performance. The silicon seesaw includes pieozoelectric materials that convert motion into electrical pulses, enabling the device to detect sound direction.

Two new documents from Illinois-based Underwriters Laboratories are recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as consensus standards for medical devices using lithium or nickel batteries.
