Preparing for the Fourth Manufacturing Revolution

Are you ready for the fourth Manufacturing Revolution? We're in the midst of it, technology futurist Jim Pinto writes. He provides key facts before posing the question of how your company might take advantage. Among the startling numbers, mobile phones are not only produced in greater numbers than PCs, but by two to one. The capacity and power of mobile devices grows rapidly, too. Not simply a trend, this is the biggest change in computing since PCs arrived. It feeds another dramatic trend, the Internet of Things, or as some call it, the 4th manufacturing revolution. Imagine 200 billion connected things. Now, imagine 30 billion of those connected things making transactions and taking actions, automatically.

Precise Positioning in Engine Rooms

When the challenge is transmitting data over long distances and operating for long periods in harsh conditions, without maintenance, these torque synchros present a potential solution. Astrosyn's lineup includes this latest single-shaft device that operates on 200/220 V. It controls precise angular positioning of motor-driven surfaces in environments like wind tunnels, steel mills, and marine engine rooms.

Diffuse Modes Detect a Difference

Having difficulty detecting transparent or textured objects on a production line? Extras on new diffuse-mode sensors might make a difference. One model has an extra-large light spot for greater sensitivity and to prevent false trips. Another incorporates near- and far-field elements for better background differentiation. A third has three lights for redundancy as well as AND and OR action.

Small but Mighty Linear Motors

Faulhaber has introduced the smallest model in its linear motor series based on Quickshaft technology. The new DC servomotor packs power aplenty for an 8 mm device — up to 2.74 N peak force. Quickshaft motors, featuring high-power magnets inside precision sliding rods, meet the need for fast acceleration, high power, and precise linear movement in a compact form.

Opting for Flexibility in Linear Drives

Users of linear drives today demand more flexibility than ever. Amacoil-Uhing's responds by building more user options into its RG linear drives. Capabilities include an option for making fine adjustments of travel distance through precise setting of reversal points and one that allows doubling the thrust capacity without having to jump to the next size up.

Onboard Crypto Engine Beefs Up Security

If there's a limit as to what functions MCUs can handle, we haven't yet found it. One MCU now features an onboard crypto engine. The hardware allows executing security functions from the chip, including encryption, decryption and authentication. Microchip says managing these steps through chip hardware offers several benefits, including quicker execution and reducing software expense.

Controls to Push Your Customers' Buttons

If user-configurable touch controls would enhance your design, check out this Dutch technology for replacing mechanical switches. While giving users more say in what their buttons do, the piezo touch controls don't need an external processor. They enable creating 11 touch buttons with customizable LED and audio feedback, on any surface, that also work with gloved hands.

Drives & Actuators . . .

Tight-wrapped Rollers Reduce Friction

NASA developed Rolamite bearings to reduce friction and eliminate cogging in motion systems. These bearings, which rely on tight wrapping of rollers by Mylar or metal bands, are now incorporated in a worm-driven actuator that cuts friction by an order of magnitude. They also permit designing less complex, smooth motion systems without leadscrews or ball screws.

Servo Integrates Components and Performance

Sure, integrating motor, drive, and sensor saves commissioning time. Sometimes there's a concession in performance. Not with this actuator. It offers accuracy, low energy consumption, and compactness while delivering a smooth torque profile at speeds to 283 rpm. The design uses a stiff cross-roller bearing to withstand high axial and radial forces and high tilt moments.
