The Right Stuff for Energy-saving Motors
 
A pair of magnetic materials are the key ingredients in highly efficient new motors patented by Australian researchers, according to this Drives & Controls piece. The two special materials discussed in the article are formed into motor stators using what are described as "novel production techniques" that keep costs low and don't require machining. Motors equipped with these stators are reportedly achieving energy efficiencies of up to 90%, compared to 60-70% for conventional motors. In addition, the article notes, the new motors are smaller than others with the same power output.
