The Biggest Motor Decision: Repair or Replace?

The Biggest Motor Decision: Repair or Replace? The larger the motor, the more difficult it is to decide, after a number of years of service, whether it should be refurbished or replaced. The decision depends on variables such as the rewind cost, severity of the failure, replacement motor purchase price, and the motor's size. Engineers should understand what each level of repair costs, i.e., the difference between basic reconditioning, re-insulating, stator rewinding, stator repair, major lamination repair or a new shaft. As a rule of thumb, motors smaller than 15 hp (11 kW) should be replaced. They are generally stock items and are not cost-effective to repair.

New Efficiency Tests for AC Motors

New Efficiency Tests for AC Motors A new and more accurate IEC efficiency testing standard in Europe has prompted ABB to begin re-testing its low-voltage AC motors and to publish the results. The new test is derived from actual measured values of losses in the motor, which in turn is based on measured temperature rises.

Low-Cost Replacement for Servos

Low-Cost Replacement for Servos They are intended to bridge the gap between standard AC motors that have no position feedback, and high-accuracy servo motors. Consequently, SINOCHRON AC motors have a much higher dynamic than standard AC motors, but offer motion control accuracy that is equal to about 98% of the servos.

Patented Motor Combo Boosts Efficiency

Patented Motor Combo Boosts Efficiency This new DC motor design is something of a surprise — an axial motor in the form of a rotary motor. It leverages the axial motor's high torque and combines it with the familiar form factor of rotary motors. Result? A design that improves efficiency by as much as 10%.

Small DC Motor Packs Power Punch

Small DC Motor Packs Power Punch For high power density and torque, this new DC motor packs it in a space significantly smaller and lighter than traditional motors, giving it a big advantage in portable and battery powered applications. The ironless core rotor eliminates hysteresis losses and cogging torque, giving it fast and smooth acceleration.

Stepper Links to Mechatrolink

Stepper Links to Mechatrolink This five-phase stepper motor, along with its driver system, are being introduced as upgraded yet more cost-effective components designed specifically to work with the Mechatrolink™ II (MLINK-II) protocol for advanced motion control applications. The high speed (10 Mbits/sec) bus has a maximum length of 50 m (164 ft).

Tiny Stepper for Cameras

Tiny Stepper for Cameras This miniature two-phase stepping motor is small enough for devices such as medical equipment, optical instruments, digital cameras, and consumer electronic products. It works on a 3V input and develops a maximum of 30 rpm, yet is only a half-inch wide (12 mm) in its largest dimension.

Motor Size Matters

Motor Size Matters Engineers who want to "play it safe" always overspecify pump motors in a manufacturing plant. The amount of wasted energy may seem trivial, but when you consider that pumps consume nearly 30% of industrial energy, this is a significant loss. Soft starters and variable speed drives can solve the problem.

Condition Monitoring in Your Hand

Condition Monitoring in Your Hand This handheld vibration monitor is used for the early detection of damage in rotating machine elements such as roller bearings, but it can also be used to balance rotors and shafts in both static and dynamic balancing applications. It includes a database of 20,000 different bearing products.
