GTL Goes Offshore

GTL Goes Offshore

Land-based gas to liquid (GTL) reactors have long been favored for converting stranded gas to marketable products. The technology is moving offshore, helped in part by a new wave of modular Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactors. According to OEDigital, early land-based GTL installations relied on airblown reformer technology. This older design requires reactor vessels 10 m in diameter, and equally oversized piping. Newer, compact FT reactors were first piloted in 2010, with commercial units in planning since 2012. These are now ready for deployment on floating production, storage, and offloading platforms (see video), with operations slated to begin by 2016.

U.S. East Coast Back Open for Exploration

The last barrier to seismic exploration of the U.S. east coast has finally been resolved, reports the Associated Press. Sonic cannons, the source of the acoustic signals needed for marine seismic arrays, will now be allowed, although their effects on marine life are still being argued.

Rethinking Residues

Upgrading residues is one path to improved profitability, but choosing the right technology is complicated. Some technologies, like delayed coking and ebulating bed hydrocracking, are well known. Arabian Oil and Gas suggests looking at newer options, like flexicoking, as a way to maximize returns with minimal capital investment.

No Water? No Problem

If worries over produced water and injection well earthquakes keep you up at night, dream cold. Really cold — liquid nitrogen cold. E&P reports on a Colorado School of Mines team that is testing the ability of cryogenic fluids like liquid nitrogen and CO2 to increase permeability. Your water-borne headaches may soon be over.

Reduce Mud Loss Expense

Lost-circulation events are disastrous, accounting for an estimated 40% of drilling costs in the Gulf of Mexico. Expandable liner hangers reduce the odds of a mud loss event, especially when traversing sand zones. Drilling Contractor examines one solution that improves anchoring and cement job integrity at the same time.

Gas is Gas, Right?

All gas is good, but is some gas better than others? Pipeline and Gas Journal looks at the interchangeability of gas, whether for direct use as a heating fuel or as a petrochemical feedstock. Ever heard of the Wobbe Index? It's one important factor in separating good gas from great gas.

Rigless Intervention Overcomes Obstacles

How do you find a leaking casing in a 30-year old offshore well — not to mention dealing with a rotted tree, minimal rig resources, and serious internal corrosion issues? For this troublesome Malaysian well, the Journal of Petroleum Technology proposed ultrasound detection coupled with rapid-response temperature sensors.

No Crude Exports, but What is Crude?

Two Texas producers recently received permits to export Eagle Ford light oil. Does this mean a reversal of the U.S oil export ban? Or is it just a redefinition of the original rule, which allows exports of anything "processed through a crude distillation tower." This Downstream Today analysis may bring some clarity to the issue.
