This is precisely what a group of green engineers are attempting to do with a North Sea Oil Platform which is due to be decommissioned in the very near future. Built for the Chevron Tahiti platform in the Gulf of Mexico, a chemical injection skid operates at 15,000 psi to withstand pressures in deep, sub-salt reservoirs. The valve redesign uses 15,000 psi compression tube fittings instead of trouble-prone threaded connectors. The 50% smaller manifold replaces nine separate components.

The biggest block and bleed valve that UK manufacturer Oliver Twinsafe ever made weighs in at 5 tons. The 12 in. valve offers weight and space savings, and will be used on an offshore platform off the coast of Louisiana. It has two trunnion-mounted ball valves for process isolation purposes.

Magnox Electric in the UK had 24,000 gallons of old diesel fuel in storage tanks for its standby generators. New legislation regulating sulphur levels meant that Magnox had to use it or lose it. Brammer UK brought a mobile pump to the site and moved the diesel to the plant's main boiler so it could be consumed before the deadline, thus saving Magnox an estimated £100,000 in fuel and labor.

Test for natural gas leaks with rubber-band-like flexible elastomeric polymer that can withstand temperatures up to 500 F. Just wrap it around a flange, punch a small hole in it, and sniff for gas leaks. Unlike masking, duct, or aluminum tape, the band seals flanges for leak testing, but it doesn't bake on and leave nasty residue behind.
