What's Driving the Next Packaging Trend?

Brand owners are accustomed to tracking consumer attitudes toward packaging features — from easy-open packs, to portion size containers — to keep in step with demand. But staying ahead of the curve sometimes requires understanding the drivers that will create or influence the next trend. This article identifies eight global developments that may impact packaging over the next few years. Among them are traditional drivers such as laws and regulations, and consumer desires for safety and convenience. But others are newer to the scene, such as digital technologies that create more and quicker connections with consumers.

Alternative Control for Filling Machines

Alternative Control for Filling Machines

The concept "No Can, No Fill" is straightforward enough and used throughout the packaging universe. Yet, pausing dispensers when containers don't appear is easier said than done. This compact controller provides an alternative to PLCs for controlling fill operations. It monitors conveyor speed, gaps between containers, and trigger signals, resulting in more accurate valve synchronization.

Carton Handling on the Fly

Few things slow carton handling more than multiple carton sizes. This advanced inspection and ejection unit, which installs above existing lines, can speed things up again. So much so that Optel Vision calls it the "Flying Carton Tracker" and says it handles 400 cpm. Printing and inspection is conducted without stopping the cartons.

Rigid & Flexible Containers . . .

Making Flexible More Sturdy

Making the move from rigid to flexible packaging is a no brainer from a source reduction perspective. But the transition is tough for larger products, which often need more stability than typical flex packs offer. PacXpert Technology from Dow fills the gap, offering a sturdier pouch that stands well upright or on its side.

Raising the Quality of Retail Ready

The potential of retail-ready packaging is clear. But delivery on the concept is often unimpressive. Delkor hopes to change the outlook a bit with its new rugged cardboard shipping case that holds up in transit yet converts into attractive display trays with a simple pull — no knives and no ragged edges or damaged product.

Success with Sporadic Inkjet Printing

Sporadic bottling schedules are common for microbrewers, creating potential problems for label production. Conventional inkjet printers are notoriously difficult to restart after long shutdowns. Leibinger introduces a solution: a printhead incorporating an automatic nozzle seal and interval mode. The design assures instant starts even after printers have been inactive for several days.

Two new quick-drying inks have been introduced to the North American market. AMI/Reiner is coupling the inks with handheld inkjet printers that use self-traversing technology and house ink and printhead in one piece. The inks can print on porous or non-porous surfaces, including curved or irregularly shaped, and metal, glass, and plastics.

Packing Machinery . . .

Pack 'Em Horizontally and Vertically

The demand for built-in flexibility in packing machines has suppliers constantly introducing novel capabilities. Among the latest twists: this cookie packer allows contents to be stacked vertically and horizontally in the same run. Bosch says the machine lets makers capitalize on market opportunities and manage quick changeovers without introducing new machine feeder elements.

Thermoforming on Horizontal Machines

It had been considered impossible by some on a horizontal machine, but this video presents a thermo form-fill-seal machine that has the capability to produce raised return flange seal packs. With the capability, it eliminates the need for using preformed trays. The unit uses 80 mil high-impact polystyrene to produce med packs with easy-to-peel tabs.
