Concrete Construction the Pneumatic Way

If a new construction technique developed at the Vienna University of Technology works the way it's supposed to, large shell structures made of concrete or stone will no longer need large and costly supporting structures. As explained in this Space Daily article, the technique requires no supporting timber structure at all. After a flat concrete slab hardens on the ground, an air cushion below the slab is inflated, bending the concrete into a shell shape. The article provides more details about this novel pneumatic construction method, which has "no problem" creating concrete shells 50 m in diameter, according to one of the developers.

Capable But Less Costly Line

Designed specifically for OEMs, the cylinders and linear slides in the new line described in this video are meant to be lower-cost alternatives to manufacturer's made-to-order products. Though they cost less than customized alternatives, products in the new line are still capable of meeting machine builders' stringent performance requirements, according to the manufacturer.

Good for a Billion Cycles

Here's the story of what's described as a unique line of two-way solenoid valves that provide five to six times more flow than other equally compact valves. What's more, the rated life of the valves exceeds a billion cycles, according to this Hydraulics & Pneumatics article, which explains how engineers came up with the new valve design.

More Flow from Tiny Pumps

The micro-size gas/vacuum pumps in this line are suitable for various pneumatic tasks, as well as ink degassing. In addition to a small footprint, the pumps are said to offer relatively high flow rates and design flexibility. The modular design of the pumps allows the manufacturer to adapt them to the requirements of specific applications.

Sensing & Measurement . . .

Accurate Sensing Without Magnets

What's special about these sensors that measure the ram position of pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders? A no-magnet design that reportedly slashes installation and ownership costs without reducing accuracy. In addition, the manufacturer notes, the sensors won't wear out in mobile, industrial, and subsea applications thanks to patented contact-less inductive sensing technology.
