Cutting Power Plant Water Use

Cutting Power Plant Water Use Arid and desert areas are usually lightly populated with reasonably priced land, making them good candidates for new power plants. But power stations typically use lots of water, so innovative engineering is needed to reduce water consumption. This Middle East Energy article shows that water use depends most heavily on the selected cooling method: either once-through cooling, tower cooling, or closed-loop radiator cooling. Once-through cooling often requires high flow rates due to temperature limitations of discharged water. Cooling towers lose lots of water to evaporation. With closed-loop radiator cooling, water consumption is negligible because heat is transferred to airflow forced through radiators by electrical fans.

Navajo Coal Plant Gets Go Ahead

Navajo Coal Plant Gets Go Ahead Almost five years after initial proposals, the U.S. EPA has finally approved construction of the 1,500 MW Desert Rock Energy Facility. The new coal-fired power plant will be located on the Navajo Nation tribal reservation. According to the EPA, the plant will be among the cleanest pulverized coal-burning power plants in the U.S.

Greenbacks for Green Power Gone

Greenbacks for Green Power Gone Everyone seems to think green is good until it comes time to pay up. POWERnews reports that Florida regulators last week shut down a green-pricing program at Florida Power & Light. The program was terminated because the utility had to spend 75% of revenues on marketing to convince 39,000 customers to pay an extra $10 per month to support renewables.

The World Is Flat

The World Is Flat It's a flat world alright, as French power engineering group Alstom aligned with the Japanese trading group Marubeni to win a power plant contract in Indonesia. Energy Business Review Online says the natural gas combined-cycle power plant will be rated at 235 MW. Alstom will engineer and manufacture the heat recovery steam generators at its Indonesian boiler facility.

Tornado Imperils Power Project

Tornado Imperils Power Project Construction of the Platte River Power Authority's fifth gas turbine-generator unit at Rawhide Energy Station should have been simple. But vendor foul-ups, substandard stainless-steel pipe from China, and a massive tornado wreaked havoc with the project schedule. ENR interviews the senior project engineer to get the details and find out what lessons were learned.

Saudis Suffer Supply "Short"

Saudis Suffer Supply 'Short' A recent massive power outage in Saudi Arabia was caused by a broken high-tension wire falling on another line and triggering a short circuit. Arab News reports that the outage interrupted 3,400 MW of power delivery or 15% of total network supply. To avoid future outages, several power projects need to be completed.

U.S. Grid Limits Power Projects

U.S. Grid Limits Power Projects Lots of green energy power plants are proposed for the U.S., but their success hinges upon massive investment in the U.S. power grid. The Public Record details how the U.S.'s three interconnected grids of 3,500 utilities serving 283 million people, "hang together by a thread, with its dilapidated state one of the greatest threats to homeland security".

Enclosures Go Underground

Enclosures Go Underground Innovative utilities are moving towards performance-based specifications instead of design guidelines. T&D World shows how performance-based specs ensure quality while giving manufacturers freedom to incorporate product enhancements and new technology. Pacific Gas & Electric details their success in specifying, purchasing, and installing more than 300,000 underground enclosures throughout their electrical distribution system.

Fiber: Fine Fit for Substations

Fiber: Fine Fit for Substations Control and communication networks in electrical substations are constantly bombarded with electrical noise. Because of resistance to electrical interference and high data throughput, fiber optic networks are ideal for substation applications. That's why GE Digital Energy is introducing its new HardFiber System, designed to "replace thousands of copper wires with a few fiber optic cables."
