China Takes the Lead

While gas turbine demand is strong in many other parts of the world, China is riding the technology to the top. New research says the country will soon become the leading market for gas turbines, thanks in large part to efforts to replace aging coal plants with modern gas-fired power generation — a switch being made to reduce emissions and provide other benefits. While the gas turbine market is climbing worldwide thanks to growing availability of low-priced natural gas, Utilities-me.com believes China will climb past the Middle East, Europe, and other regions to take the top spot. How long can this gas bubble hold?

PowerCommand Remote Monitoring System
Cummins Power Generation

The PowerCommand 500/550 Remote Monitoring System from Cummins Power Generation remotely monitors and controls generator sets, transfer switches, sensors, and output controls. The system displays and stores power system data, and sends notifications about faults and warnings via SMTP/e-mail, SMS/text, and SNMP/traps. The Web-based graphical user interface simplifies configuration, useability, and diagnositics.

Nuclear Drops to 30-Year Low

A new report says nuclear power's share of worldwide power production has dropped to 4.4%, the lowest it's been since 1984. But Power Magazine says the drop isn't because nuclear power is being abandoned; rather, it's because of Japan's "long-term outage" following the Fukushima disaster, leading to hopes for a recovery of sorts.

Wind Godfather Going Solar

Rich Vander Veen is known as the "wind godfather." He's behind Michigan's largest wind project, the 133-turbine project in Gratiot County, and his work has been called "a model for how you build a local wind farm." But Vander Veen is branching out into solar, and Midwest Energy News shares why the wind advocate is suddenly staring into the sun.

Improving Remote HMI

Modern power plants need to be remotely monitored in real-time, with data retrieved and acted upon from anywhere. The Internet has made this process much easier, but today, workers want to access human machine interfaces (HMIs) with smartphones and tablets. Control Engineering explores the history of HMIs, as well as the latest innovations for remote HMI access.

Making Sense of Data

Are the latest sensors and data streams actually making things harder, rather than easier, for control system users in modern power plants? After all, some companies wind up drowning in more data than they can possibly use. Control Engineering Asia shares how some plants learn from their data by implementing systems that simplify, rather than complicate, process control.

Replacing HVDC

American Electric Power in Texas has turned to ABB for a new, high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) link to replace the 30-year-old Oklaunion HVDC back-to-back converter station. The station is a key part of the Oklaunion HVDC transmission link, which connects the Texas and Oklahoma power grids. As Renew Grid notes, the project is much larger than it initially appears.

Lateral Fusing Still Recommended?

For nearly a century, lateral fusing has been considered the most effective way to increase reliability in a distribution system. However, in 2008, Toronto Hydro studied the worst-performing feeder lines in its distribution system, and they found lateral fuses weren't providing consistent reliability. Electricity Today examines whether lateral fuses can still deliver like they have in the past.

Recommended Practices for Harmonic Control

This IEEE recommended practice establishes goals for the design of electrical systems that include both linear and nonlinear loads. Voltage and current waveforms that may exist throughout the system are described, and waveform distortion goals for the system designer are established. The interface between sources and loads is described as the point of common coupling and observance of the design goals will minimize interference between electrical equipment.
