The technology exists to clean and reuse wastewater for consumption, but can it overcome the yuck factor? One town, Wichita Falls, TX, turned the valves on reused water destined for residential use and local news found mixed reactions. The wastewater goes through seven purification processes including filtering it through a reverse osmosis process. Wichita Falls is not the only community using wastewater for its drinking supply. A west Texas utility has piped treated effluent to its customers for drinking water for more than a year. Residents of Pleasanton, CA, have been lining up to fill containers with treated effluent. Norman and Oklahoma City, OK, are also considering the idea. Valves isolate pumps and equipment and control wastewater flow through the treatment stages.

Three coalbed methane (CBM) projects, under construction in the Australian state of Queensland, will produce more than 27 million tpa (tons per annum) of liquid natural gas (LNG). Pipelines stretching hundreds of kilometers will link the CBM wells to LNG production facilities. Thousands of valve actuators, including electric modulating models are being installed for process control. Nearly 1,000 electro-hydraulic actuators are earmarked for shutdown valves, well head sinks, and metering skids.

A Cool Refrigeration Method
 
A leakless rotating valve is a key component in a prototype refrigerator that uses the magnetocaloric cooling effect (MCE). Researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and GE Appliances are working on a system that uses magnets to create a field that agitates particles in a solid refrigerant and causes the unit to cool. Money for planes, not infrastructure. The solution was privatization. Emission Guidelines Released
 
U.S. gas utility companies have worked to reduce emissions from natural gas distribution systems by replacing and upgrading infrastructure, and now the American Gas Association (AGA) is asking them to do more. The AGA approved a set of voluntary guidelines that may lead to further emissions reductions, including installing low- or no-bleed valves in place of high bleed pneumatic devices, pipe replacement, and enhancing damage prevention programs.

The ASTM A522/A522M specification covers 8% and 9% nickel-alloy steel forged or rolled flanges, fittings, valves, and parts intended for use in welded pressure vessels for low-temperature service. The specification is applicable to forgings with maximum section thickness of 3 in. (75 mm) in the double normalized and tempered condition and 5 in. (125 mm) in the quenched and tempered condition.
