Wire and Cable Find Market a Bear

Wire and Cable Find Market a Bear The fall in the housing and construction industries and reduced demand for consumer goods are making the market for wire and cable a real bear. In addition, the government bailout may actually hurt the wire and cable industry, at least in the short run, as funds are diverted from infrastructure development programs to financial institutions. On a positive note, however, lower prices for raw materials, such as copper and plastic, may ease the pressure on profit margins for wire and cable manufacturers. See pg. 24 of this outlook prepared by UK research firm Integer Research Ltd. for the article.

Botox for Power Lines

Botox for Power Lines Residents of Anderson Island in the Puget Sound were concerned about the reliability of their 2.3 mi long submarine power line. Tanner Electric Coop looked into several alternatives. They chose a silicone solution rejuvenation technique that offers longer cable life, hot electron absorption, UV protection, and partial-discharge suppression.

IEEE OKs First BPL Hardware Standard

IEEE OKs First BPL Hardware Standard IEEE has approved the industry's first standard for Broadband Over Power Lines (BPL). IEEE 1675 'Standard for Broadband Over Powerline Hardware' provides testing and verification standards for couplers and other hardware used in BPL installations. It also suggests additional methods to supplement existing installation procedures.

Auto Cables on a Diet

Auto Cables on a Diet Delphi Deutschland has developed wires for automotive wiring harnesses with a diameter of only 0.03 mm. These wires are much thinner and lighter than conventional cables. Because they are so thin, they can only carry data, not power. The wires, nevertheless, will help reduce weight and improve fuel consumption.

Braiding Technology Advances

Braiding Technology Advances Improvements in braiding machines include electronic speed and tension controls, automated lubrication, and low-bobbin detectors. These factors help manufacturers produce more sophisticated products for data, control, and coaxial cables. Products include smaller-diameter braids and copper and other materials braided together. (See pg. 78)

Project Aims to Keep Bridges Suspended

Project Aims to Keep Bridges Suspended Engineers at Columbia University have launched a unique corrosion-testing project on one of the largest cables ever built in a laboratory. The cable is 20 ft long, 20 in. thick, and made of nearly 10,000 galvanized wires. Engineers are testing the cable in an environmental chamber simulating aggressive weather conditions to accelerate deterioration.

Nanotube Cables Support Space Elevator

Nanotube Cables Support Space Elevator Cambridge University scientists developed a strong, flexible carbon nanotube material that may make space elevators possible. NASA needs 144,000 miles of nanotube cable to connect a ground station to a space station. The cable would run 22,000 mi. above Earth, and another 40,000 mi. to a weighted structure for stability.

Multimode Fibers Rev Up

Multimode Fibers Rev Up Multimode optical fibers have always been limited to applications where data rates are relatively low. The newest generations of multimode fibers can, however, support the same high data rates as singlemode fibers, including 40 and 100 Gbits/sec. They also retain the cost savings normally associated with using multimode fibers.
