Eight Wireless Wonders

Eight Wireless Wonders As wireless firms assemble their future business plans, they are weighing the key technologies that analyst firm Gartner predicts will affect corporate strategies over the next two years. The eight mobile solutions identified as having an impact are Bluetooth 3.0, mobile user interfaces, location sensing, 802.11n, new displays, mobile Web, mobile broadband, and near-field communication (NFC). Faster speed and greater coverage will be powered by Bluetooth 3.0, the 802.11n version of Wi-Fi, and mobile broadband. NFC will support applications for mobile payments. Gartner predicts increased competition in the user interface space, spurring improved mobile consumer experiences.

Smart Forklift Picks Up Throughput

Smart Forklift Picks Up Throughput Unveiled at ProMat 2009, a new RFID forklift system is now available. The system uses a combination of lasers and acoustic sensors on the lift that read pallet tags and communicate to the driver that the right pallet is being handled and processed. Pallet throughput may be increased up to 20%, and accuracy rates improved as well.

It's All About the Packaging

It's All About the Packaging Harsh conditions in warehousing and manufacturing are no match for this RFID tag. Sealed in epoxy and silicon, the customizable tag withstands read interference that can occur when exposed to high humidity, immersed in liquid, or attached to a metal surface. Data reads are improved via an oxygen-iron powder on the antenna.

Big Four Slack on 3G

Big Four Slack on 3G One study questions U.S. wireless carriers' ability to deliver advertised 3G data speeds. Broadband requires throughput of 1.5 Mbps for downloads and 250 Kbps for uploads. The study says carriers don't meet these requirements. Most notable was the iPhone 3G. Telecoms' say the study isn't representative of their customer base.

Brush-up on Security

Brush-up on Security RF blocking paints are used to secure data, but researchers claim these older methods are nearly obsolete. Today's electromagnetic waves use 100 GHz frequencies; paint blocking systems work up to 50 GHz. University of Tokyo researchers identified an aluminum-ion oxide paint that blocks higher frequency waves and encrypts data.
