Mobile Device RFID Reader

As the demand for mobile devices with RFID capability grows, the SkyModule Nova could satisfy those wants. Incorporating ultra-high frequency chip technology, the reader uses a "MEMS-based adaptive antenna." The developing company expects to embed the module into mobile computing devices to give users an alternative to purpose-built RFID scanners.

Energy-harvesting Tracking Solution

GPS tracking technology is the key to a new solution for its containers (seen here) as they travel through the aviation supply chain. The tracking device is connected to a solar panel and actually harvests energy from sunlight to charge the batteries inside the unit. Real-time data collection ensures shipment control and damage reduction, claims the company.

Real-time MRO Reduces Error

Necessity is the mother of invention. So when Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT) needed a real-time tracking solution for maintenance parts, it developed its own RFID solution, with a little help from Airbus Consulting. An RFID label is generated for received parts and stays with the component throughout the maintenance and repair process. ADAT claims turnaround times are now faster and fewer errors are being made.

Moving from Wires to WiFi

This white paper outlines the basics of moving from a wired to wireless industrial network. Some of the tips offered include knowing how many users will be on the new WiFi network, throughput requirements, understanding how data will be sent and received, knowing which protocols will be used, and being aware of the environment and roaming needs. The author claims this information will lead to a successful network design.

Industrial WLANs Save Space, Money

When space and money are limited, these two expanded-application industrial WLANs could satisfy both constraints. The compact footprint of one of the access points and client module provide a wireless solution inside a cabinet while a field-level access point and module can be wall mounted to conserve space. The company claims both are economically feasible. Manufacturing, warehousing, and logistics are ideal applications for these WLANs.
