Using a configurable long instruction word architecture to provide application-specific DSP instruction sets

A configurable long instruction word (CLIW) architecture allows programmers to create customized long word instructions that are optimized specifically for their target applications. In doing so, it combines the benefits ov VLIEW (high performance and high flexible control) and SMD (compact code and low power). CLIW-based instructions provide VLIW flexibility and performance, with the efficiency and simplicity of microprocessors. Full parallel execution is achieved, resulting in benchmarks that compare favorably to other leading DSP architectures.

DSPs are specialized processors with architectures that are optimized for real-time processing of signals. The newer DSPs process signals at quite high processing rates-some in the GigaFlops range. These DSP architectures achieve very high processing rates with multiple data pointers and with zero-overhead loops that are used in intensive filtering processes, such as Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filtering and auto correlation.
