Stability of chlorine-substituted dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurrans

The stability of a series of chlorine substituted dioxins and furrans compounds has been estimated via a QSAR method using electronic descritors that were estimated using ab inito calculations. Approximately one third of municipal solid waste (MSW) is burned in France in about 300 incinerators. Most of which are only equipped with the basic flue gas treatment; dioxins and NOx treatment being very rare. In order to check whether oxygen enrichment might improve the environmental performance of an industrial operated MSW incinerator we have coupled the results of industrial scale experiments to molecular modeling of the reactive properties of a number of halogen substituted dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzo-furans. These compounds range in toxicity from virtually none to very high as that of 2,3,7,8 tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (tcdd), for example. The analysis of the patterns
